Connecting Librarians: The HECA Library Group Pilot of the Professional Development Framework
No full textThe Higher Education Colleges Association (HECA) represents the interests of fifteen private higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland. Its Committees include a Teaching and Learning Committee and a Library Committee (also known as the HECA Library Group). The Library Committee was invited by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning to pilot the Forum’s Professional Development Framework for all Those Who Teach in Higher Education to test its suitability for librarians. This chapter reports on the six-month pilot of the Framework, using feedback collected from two focus groups conducted in June 2017 at the close of the pilot and in April 2018. A significant finding is that use of the Framework has made private college librarians feel more connected to, and less “siloed’ from, other professionals in the higher education sector. The chapter explores the implications of this feedback for private college librarians, and librarians generally, in terms of their professional identity, professional practice and professional development.https://arc.cct.ie/fac_books/1003/thumbnail.jp

Get PDFThis report presents the development of an online review web application for the International English Language Market. While in Ireland this industry contributes hugely to the Irish economy, the few regulations on the sector caused a wave of closures from 2014 to 2016. Several specific aspects of this industry that have contributed to this situation, such as the fact that most hiring student are of non-EEA origin (which includes specific Immigration arrangements for this group) justifies the relevance of an online review tool. This project discusses alternatives for establishing trust in the sector through validation, while presents concerning topics surrounding the project theme as well such as the General Data Protection Regulation. Technical development aspects of the application are covered including the relevance of tools and technologies used as well as decisions in the business logic of the system and further refinement of the problem addressed through the use of interviews

Get PDFMost of the reasons for implementing the EHMS (Electronic Health Management System) focus on improving medical care as a whole for Patient, Physicians and Doctors. However, achieving an excellent quality of best medical care through EMR (Electronic Medical Record) is neither low-cost nor easy. Based on our qualitative study on physician practices we have found that quality improvement depends heavily on doctors’ use of the EMRs, not use of papers for their daily tasks. I also identified Key barriers to physicians’ use of EMRs and also observed that EMR software becomes useless for doctors due to its complex interface. E-Health Management System for Outdoor patient is the complete comprehensive solution for hospitals and clinics. This solution caters the full life cycle of modern hospitals and clinics, using this system patients can take appointment form their homes and confirm the availability of particular doctors. A consultant can access the medical record of their patient, and prescribe to their patient using this system. In this FYP document, I have briefly described all the phase that it has gone through from its inception to the implementation. Something that in a fast pace world like this can be considered a luxury.Nevertheless, the opportunity to offer something different to a specific target of users, who enjoy gaming options, is an interesting and worthwhile challenge to be taken

The Effects of Enhanced Compiler Error Messages on a Syntax Error Debugging Test
No full textThere is an active strand of research in the literature exploring the effects of Enhanced Compiler Error Messages on student programming behavior, however many results seem conflicting. This is compounded by the fact that directly comparing these results is difficult as these studies utilize different metrics, and what metrics are best suited to measure the effects of enhanced compiler error messages is not known. Common to most studies to-date is that the metrics employed measure how many errors students produce, and/or rectify while writing programs. This study takes a different approach by measuring how many pre-existing syntax errors are rectified by students while debugging programs. Specifically, we measured the effect of enhanced compiler error messages in an empirical control/intervention experiment where students were given the task of removing syntax errors from non-compiling source code they did not write. We find a significant positive effect on the overall number of errors rectified, as well as the number of certain specific error types, but no significant effect on the number of non-compiling submissions or student scores. These results (in different ways) support the findings of several recent studies and suggest that their results may not be as conflicting as they seem. This is evidence that enhanced error messages may be effective, but also that the signal of these effects are relatively weak, indicating that how and what is measured when attempting to observe these effects is important
