Comparative Assessment of Feature Extraction for Fast Neutron Spectra Prediction with Machine Learning Algorithms using a CVD Diamond Detector
Machine learning algorithms are recognized as effective tools for addressing challenges in nuclear methodologies and instrumentation, particularly when obtaining experimental data or precise mathematical models is difficult. One notable challenge in fast neutron spectroscopy involves unfolding neutron spectra from solid-state detectors, where conventional deconvolution techniques often suffer from instability. This study uses the PHITS code to simulate the behavior of a CVD diamond detector subjected to various neutron spectra. The simulated data serve as input to a regression model aimed at reconstructing the original spectra. In particular, we investigate the impact of four different signal processing and feature extraction techniques-Fourier transform, nodal basis projection, wavelet decomposition and agglomerative clustering-based compression-on the performance of spectrum reconstruction. These transformations are applied as preprocessing steps, and the resulting features are then used to train a supervised regression model (linear or kernel ridge, depending on the method). Model performance is evaluated using the R² metric against reference spectra from the IAEA Compendium database. The most effective approach is then applied to experimental data collected with a CVD diamond detector at the DANAIDES irradiation facility, part of the TOTEM platform in Cadarache. This final test, performed on 14 MeV and AmBe neutron sources, demonstrates the practical feasibility of the proposed methodology for real-world neutron spectrum reconstruction

Fever-range temperature alters continual efferocytosis mediated by mouse pro-inflammatory macrophages
International audienceAbstract Fever, a cardinal sign of inflammation, has been shown to modulate macrophage functions. Here, we investigate whether fever affects macrophage efferocytosis. This process is essential for the resolution of inflammation and the return to homeostasis with the reprogramming of macrophages towards a pro-resolving phenotype. Using primary mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide and interferon-γ (i.e., pro-inflammatory macrophages), we first validated that exposure to febrile temperature (39.5°C) induced a heat shock protein response. Then, we observed that febrile temperature decreased the capacity of pro-inflammatory macrophages to uptake apoptotic cells. This reduced efferocytic capacity of macrophages exposed to febrile temperature resulted from a decreased capacity to interact with apoptotic cells and to internalize these dying cells. Exposure to febrile temperature reduced the cell motility of macrophages in response to apoptotic cells, as assessed by IncuCyte® live-cell imaging. RNA sequencing analysis of pro-inflammatory macrophages exposed to febrile temperature identified an upregulation of the Adam17 gene. As this gene encodes a protease that sheds the efferocytic receptor Mer, we determined cell surface expression of Mer and quantified soluble Mer in the culture supernatants of pro-inflammatory macrophages exposed to febrile temperature. While febrile hyperthermia induced the Mer cleavage from the cell surface of pro-inflammatory macrophages, ADAM17 inhibition during exposure to febrile temperature did not restore the efferocytic capacity of pro-inflammatory macrophages. Thus, reduction of Mer expression induced by hyperthermia did not represent the main mechanism explaining reduced efferocytosis. Nevertheless, our work suggests that fever, by decreasing efferocytic capacity of macrophages, maintains their pro-inflammatory state
Compressive Strength Properties Related to Microstructure of Chemically Blown Tannin Foams
International audienceBiophenolic foams are of great interest in many applications for their renewability and lightness. In this paper, five formulations of tannin foams produced via chemical foaming using harmless reactants such as tannins, hexamine, and a non‐toxic blowing agent are prepared and characterized. Foams with apparent density varying from 0.072 to 0.087 g/cm 3 have been obtained. The study focuses on the influence of the surfactant and the blowing agent on the physical properties of these foams. First, foam microstructure is analyzed by determining mean window diameter thanks to SEM image treatment and mean cell wall thickness, mean cell diameter, cellular porosity, and internal cell wall porosity thanks to X‐ray tomography. Results show an average window diameter that ranges from 132 to 192 μm. The average cell diameter ranges from 603 to 985 μm and the wall thickness is from 55 to 70 μm. Mechanical properties, in terms of compressive strength, have been determined and a maximum elastic modulus of 2 MPa and a maximum compressive strength of 105 kPa have been obtained for 1.5%w of blowing agent. Microstructure analysis showed that these results in the most homogeneous and the finest cell size distribution. In addition, compressive strength is influenced more by the size of the cells, windows, and walls than by how apparently dense the material appears

The quantization of radiation energy, first introduced by Max Planck to resolve the ultraviolet catastrophe, marked the historical origin of quantum theory. However, Planck's postulate has long remained a phenomenological insertion without a first-principles derivation. In this work, we derive both Planck’s postulate and Planck’s radiation law from the geometric foundations of Trembling Spacetime Relativity Theory (TSRT). Here, spacetime is not smooth but exhibits bounded microscopic fluctuations, constrained by the requirement that proper time remains real and forward-directed. Photons are modeled not as wave–particle dual entities but as corpuscular excitations traveling along null geodesics perturbed by this geometric trembling. The quantization of energy emerges as a direct consequence of coherence conditions in geodesic deviation, without invoking operator formalism, wave superposition, or probabilistic postulates. A statistical treatment of these geodesic configurations leads to the Planck spectrum, even at zero temperature, where residual trembling persists. Furthermore, we derive consistent, geometric definitions of entropy and temperature in this framework, showing that TSRT not only reproduces known thermodynamic limits but also predicts a maximal temperature associated with the breakdown of causal geodesic structure. Despite the strict corpuscular nature of photons in TSRT, the theory exactly reproduces the relativistic Doppler shift, demonstrating that spectral and thermodynamic observables transform covariantly across inertial frames. This offers a deterministic and falsifiable foundation for black body radiation and the thermodynamics of light, grounded entirely in the causal geometry of spacetime. We further derive a local, curvature-suppressed entropy formula from trembling geodesics, which reduces to the Bekenstein–Hawking area law in strongly curved regions, providing a first-principles geometric foundation for gravitational thermodynamics without invoking quantum field theory.

Multiwinner Elections with Diversity Constraints on Individual Preferences
International audienceWe address the problem of selecting a committee of a specified size from a given set of candidates, where individuals are requested to provide their preferences in the form of linear rankings of the candidates. In this framework, the selection of a committee depends on the multiwinner voting rule, also known as the committee selection rule. In this paper, we assume that the candidates possess an official attribute, namely the gender identity. Additionally, the linear ordering of voters should meet some diversity requirements (such as alternating males and females positions, ranking a certain number/percentage of males and females in the top half of the linear ranking, etc.) in order to be considered as admissible for the voting process. The objective of this paper is to assess the cost incurred by implementing diversity restrictions on the preferences of voters. We present a measure for assessing the cost of diversity and calculate the maximum cost, or upper bound, for a commonly used family of multiwinner voting methods known as (weakly) separable committee scoring rules.JEL Codes : D71, D7

Quantum entanglement is widely regarded as the most puzzling feature of quantum theory, apparently violating local realism through nonlocal correlations between spacelike-separated particles. Although violations of Bell inequalities are experimentally confirmed, their standard theoretical explanation relies on wavefunction collapse or nonlocal hidden variables. In this work, we present an alternative explanation based on Trembling Spacetime Relativity Theory (TSRT). In this framework, intrinsic metric fluctuations generate proper-time-synchronized geodesic ensembles whose deterministic trajectories give rise to statistical correlations across spacetime. Measurement outcomes are reinterpreted as geometric responses to these fluctuating backgrounds, without invoking quantum collapse or nonlocal influence. We show that the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt (CHSH) inequality can be violated deterministically within a locally causal geometric structure. These violations emerge as macroscopic imprints of shared spacetime curvature, not quantum superposition. The resulting correlation function reproduces quantum predictions at short ranges but decays with separation—yielding testable deviations in long-baseline and gravitationally modulated experiments.
