Should I stay or should I go? Place detachment in the face of overtourism
International audienceOvertourism has become a major issue worldwide and will remain a key issue for local residents, tourism actors and local authorities in years to come. Whilst academics have researched tourism impacts for decades, overtourism is more complex and its various consequences have been met by a fierce opposition from local residents in various destinations. This paper aims to revisit older models of tourism impacts to provide a more detailed approach of the overtourism stages and its associated consequences. It details the shock wave that overtourism represents for local populations and how this process gradually pushes them away from their place of daily living. The research also investigates residents who have made the conscious choice to move away from their destination, explaining how place detachment occurs and its main causes

Chronicles of an announced landscape disaster and lessons for the future: spatial modelling of the plane tree Canker stain
International audiencePlane tree Canker stain which is caused by the fungus Ceratocystis platani is the most harmful disease of plane trees in the world. Despite a large corpus of scientific literature, there are no case studies of the biogeographical distribution and historical expansion of the tree and this harmful associated organism at the landscape scale. The connection between landscape ecology tools and concepts and the changes in composition or loss of major elements like remarkable trees of landscape heritage is neither established. Based on previous research into the detection and dispersal of Dutch Elm Disease in Western Europe and after the large felling of thousands of plane trees alongside the UNESCO World Heritage site “Canal du Midi” since 2006, representing a true landscape disruption which leads to local conflicts, the aim of this study was to evaluate and assess the effectiveness of the spatial dispersal of plane tree Canker stain in the city of Toulouse and its connections with the two waterways using open-access georeferenced data on dendrometrical characterics. It indicates how spatial modelling of ecological anti-corridors can help to slow down the spread of the disease and provide for gradual replacement of trees to restrain its spread along the “Canal Latéral à la Garonne”. Our contribution is also questioning how the landscape structures and connectivity can facilitate or impede the disease spread among host patches

On the wave propagation in hydroelastic phononic crystals
International audiencePhononic crystals (PCs) and elastic metamaterials (EMs) have been viewed as innovative solutions for wave manipulation in various applications. By exploiting periodicity, engineering structures can be designed to enable various interesting functionalities such as bandgap formation, energy localization, “diode” mechanisms, and more which are not readily found in conventional materials. Accordingly, this paper develops a modeling technique for hydroelastic PCs, combining reduced-order unit cell models with the Wave-based Finite Element Method (WFEM), and investigates the influence of fluid filling levels on their dynamic behavior. The baseline unit cell is three-dimensional and features an internal void that allows the confinement of fluid (water) within its structure. Results from numerical simulations illustrate the good accuracy of reduced-order models and the WFEM in predicting the dynamic behavior of hydroelastic PCs. Besides, dispersion analyses and forced responses showed that the propagation of waves is significantly affected by varying the fluid filling level, shifting stopbands and enhancing bandgap formation. Therefore, this work opens new avenues for the design of advanced metastructures with strong potential for wave manipulation, including tunable bandgaps and waveguides, adaptive vibration control, reconfigurability, and other functions
Suivi de déformations lors d’essais de déchaussement de fibre unitaire in situ par tomographie à rayons X
International audienceComprendre les mécanismes de séparation entre le renfort fibreux et la matrice au niveau de l’interface est essentiel pour maîtriser la performance d’un matériau composite étant donné que l’interface constitue le siège des transferts de charges entre les deux constituants. En cela, l’essai de déchaussement de microgoutte sur fibre élémentaire permet de se focaliser sur le comportement de l’interface fibre/matrice. Or, jusqu’à présent, ces essais, suivis par observation microscopique, ne permettent pas de sonder le cœur de la matière. Cette étude vise à montrer l’intérêt de visualiser ces essais de déchaussement sous tomographie à rayons X de sorte à pouvoir suivre, de manière in situ le comportement au niveau de l’interface. Pour cela, de premières observations en tomographie à rayons X ont été réalisées sur des<br>échantillons avant et après déchaussement. La comparaison entre ces deux états met par exemple en évidence les phénomènes de fissurations pouvant se produire lors du déchaussement, ce qui, dans le cas d’un suivi in situ, permettrait de mieux comprendre les mécanismes de séparation ayant lieu à l’interface fibre/matrice
