    A PDMS/Silicon Adhesion Control Method at Millimeter-Scale Based on Microvibration

    International audienceSwitchable surface adhesion at a small scale is crucial for robot end‐effector design, allowing the manipulation of small objects such as semiconductors, optical lenses, and precision mechanical parts. In this work, a detailed characterization of a millimeter‐scale (1–5 mm) adhesion modulation method is performed, demonstrating its effectiveness for switching adhesion on small, lightweight objects with smooth surfaces. This modulation phenomenon arises from the viscoelastic behavior when PDMS interacts with a rigid surface and is controlled via microvibration. A maximum apparent adhesion enhancement of 2400% and a reduction of 50% are achieved with a 1 mm‐diameter PDMS hemisphere vibrating at a 30 μm amplitude and a 700 Hz frequency. The effects of different parameters, including size, actuation amplitude/frequency, surface roughness, and material properties, on adhesion performance are carefully measured and analyzed. A monotonic increase in maximum adhesion is observed with increased device size and surface smoothness, while nonlinear relationships of other factors are generalized with a numerical model. A long working lifespan and high endurance are also observed during the characterization. This work serves as a practical reference for the further design of small‐scale soft grippers, highlighting its continuous, large modulation range, simple structure, and flexible control

    Robustness analysis of externally driven damped solitons in the presence of uncertainties and disorders

    International audienceThis paper investigates the sensitivity of localized vibrations phenomena in externally driven Duffing oscillator chains. Such investigation is conducted by generalizing the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) to accommodate disorder functions in all physical parameters, beyond impurities commonly found in the literature, limited to the natural frequency of the components. Given the absence of closed-form solutions for externally driven damped systems, we employ a numerical method, followed by statistical analysis, to elucidate the effects of parameter uncertainties across the lattice on solitons behavior. Our findings highlight the diverse effects of the physical nature of uncertainties within the mechanical structure, offering insights into possible experimental investigations. Additionally, we illustrate how specific impurities along the chain, capable to nucleate oscillations, mitigate resonant chaotic behaviors, reinforcing soliton stability. The results affirm the feasibility of generating standing waves in nonlinear lattices, emphasizing their relevance beyond traditional periodic assumptions, where uncertainties in physical parameters are commonly disregarded

    Survival outcomes and response to immune checkpoint inhibitors among patients with advanced Merkel cell carcinoma: a retrospective study of 81 patients

    International audienceBackground: Advanced Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has been shown to be effectively targeted by PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in phase II trials and real-world studies. More than 50% of MCC patients display resistance to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors while identification of predictive factors for response has been inconclusive so far in this population. Our primary objective was to assess overall survival (OS) in a real-world cohort of advanced MCC patients treated with PD(L)1 inhibitors in France. Secondary objectives were to assess real-world overall response rates (rwORR), duration of response (rwDOR), progression-free survival (rwPFS) and predictive factors of response.Methods: Patients from an ongoing cohort of MCC cases (1998-2023) were included in the current study if they had received at least one infusion of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor for advanced MCC as any line of treatment.Results: Among the 81 patients included, OS at 24 months- was 58 % (95 % confidence interval (CI) 46.2-68.9). RwORR was 51.9 % (95 %CI 40.9-62.9). Median OS was significantly higher among responders than non-responders (median OS 59.0 months (95 %CI 39.4-not reached (NR)) vs. 8.1 months (95 %CI 6.6-17.0). RwDOR was significantly shorter in partial vs. complete responders (3.4 months vs. NR). Patients with rwDOR in excess of 6 months had improved OS compared to others (median OS: 59.0 months, 95 %CI 39-NR vs. 28.5 months, 95 %CI 20.3-NR). Median rwPFS was 9.0 months (95 %CI 4.5-20.4). None of the baseline clinical and laboratory characteristics or treatment-related characteristics were found to be associated with response.Conclusion: Our results confirm durable responses and prolonged survival to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in MCC patients. We did not identify any biomarker predictive of response to treatment. Our data underline the benefit of achieving complete response in PD(L)1 inhibitor-treated MCC patients, allowing longer duration of response and increased OS, suggesting the potential use of DOR above 6 months as a surrogate marker of OS in this setting

The WHO HPV Laboratory Manual, published in 2009, has provided essential guidance to promote an internationally comparable quality of HPV testing for many years. As the development in this area is rapid, the Global Network of National HPV Reference Laboratories considered that there is a need for an updated HPV Laboratory e-Manual to serve as a comprehensive and interactive resource for professionals engaged in quality-assured HPV testing for research and/or HPV-based cancer control

    CoPc/rGO and CuPc/rGO Nanocomposites: Comparative Characterization and Study of Their Gas Sensing Properties

    International audienceNanocomposites made of tetrahexyloxy-substituted Co or Cu phthalocyanines adsorbed onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been prepared for detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Such nanocomposites could be formed in organic solvents, thanks to the high solubility of the substituted phthalocyanines, establishing van der Waals and π–π stacking interactions with rGO. UV–visible, FT-IR, and XPS characterizations evidenced the energy transfer between rGO and the phthalocyanines; this adsorption ability is highly suitable to form nanocomposites exhibiting improved electronic properties. The gas sensing properties of various VOCs were explored by conductometric measurements conducted on interdigitated electrodes modified with the nanocomposites, highlighting the effect of the alkyloxy substituents and phthalocyanine’s metal. All exhibited high affinity to ammonia gas compared with other VOCs. The CuPc/rGO nanocomposites showed higher sensitivity with a lower limit of detection (0.4 ppm) compared to CoPc/rGO (1 ppm), while phthalocyanines alone give lower sensitivity, where the limit of detection of CuPc(OHex)4 is 5.7 ppm and CoPc(OHex)4 shows a nonlinear fit. We explained this behavior by improved energy transfer between rGO and CuPc(OHex)4, favoring the coordination of ammonia. Detection of ammonia gas in real samples has been achieved to further demonstrate the efficiency of these sensors
