Exposure to toxic trace metals is negatively associated with testis mass in wild male roe deer
International audienceAlthough trace metal toxicity has been extensively studied in laboratory settings, its long-term effects on wildlife are poorly understood. Most wild animals are likely to be exposed to low doses of trace metals throughout their lives; however, whether such chronic exposure affects fitness-related traits in natural populations remains to be investigated. In this study, we tested the relationships between trace metal burden and sex hormones, primary and secondary sexual traits in wild male roe deer. Using samples collected from 71 hunted males, we measured the hair and liver concentrations of various toxic trace metals, faecal testosterone metabolites (FTM), testis mass and antler length. We focused on cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) in roe deer tissues. Using linear (mixed effects) models, we found that Cd and, to a lesser extent, Co concentrations in the liver, but not in hair, were negatively associated with absolute testicular mass, a proxy of sperm production. However, metal burden, measured in either the liver or hair, was not related to antler length or FTM levels, despite their respective roles in male competitiveness for access to females and the underlying adjustments for seasonal breeding. Hence, our findings highlight the consequences of exposure to Cd and Co on male testicular function in a wild ungulate. Any alteration in male competitiveness for fertilization is expected to have lasting fitness consequences, which could subsequently alter population dynamics
How can we optimize the surgical management of the axilla in breast cancer since the MonarchE trial?
International audiencePurpose: Results of MonarchE trial have changed adjuvant therapy for estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+), HER-2-negative breast cancer. Given the importance of the extent of nodal disease in this study, surgical management of the axilla has resurfaced as a question asked at multidisciplinary boards. Methods: Using data from a cohort of Werkoff (JCO, 2009) in which patients underwent both sentinel lymph node(SLN) biopsy and axillary node dissection (ALND), we assessed the proportion of patients in whom the absence of ALND would have led to a lack of awareness of "high-risk" status. We evaluated the contribution of the Katz nomogram (that predict pN2/N3 stage) to guide possible indications for complementary ALND.Results: Among the 536 patients, 88 were excluded (ER- and/or isolated cells in SLN). Of patients with 1 or 2 SLN + (n = 352), only 7.9% were pN2/N3. When the ratio (number of SLN + /total number of SLN sampled) was less than 1, only 3.9% were pN2/N3. Patients with 1 or 2 SLN + met the ACOSOG Z0011 criteria so none would benefit from an ALND, but 7.9% of patients at high risk will not receive Abemaciclib. If we use the Katz nomogram (threshold ≤ 5%), this rate decrease at 3.3% but 116 patients will have an ALND with no benefit. With a threshold ≤ 20%, 5% patients at high risk will not receive Abemaciclib but 21 patients will have an ALND with no benefit. Conclusion: The indications for adjuvant Abemaciclib should not lead to surgical escalation in the management of the axilla

Le jeu et le calcul mental
This dissertation examines the contribution of game-based pedagogy to the learning of mental arithmetic in elementary school. It aims to analyze how games can help pupils become familiar with mental calculation strategies and to offer teachers practical guidance for the effective use of this approach. The study is based on the hypothesis that games enhance motivation, understanding, and student engagement, while also allowing for greater individualization of learning and valuing errors as a learning tool. The research relies on interviews with four Cycle 2 teachers and a questionnaire completed by 130 elementary school pupils over a one-year period. The results show that game-based pedagogy fosters a more positive perception of mental arithmetic among pupils, without necessarily guaranteeing a sense of competence. It also reveals limitations related to student participation, concentration, and the amount of preparation time required for teachers.
Two distinct neural pathways for mechanical versus digital technology
International audienceTechnology pervades every aspect of our lives, making it crucial to investigate how the human mind deals with it. Here we examine the cognitive and neural foundations of technological cognition. In the first fMRI experiment, participants viewed videos depicting the use of mechanical tools (e.g., a screwdriver) and digital tools (e.g., a smartphone) compared to simple object movements. Results revealed a key dissociation: mechanical tools extensively activated the dorsal and ventro-dorsal visual streams, which are motor- and action-oriented brain systems. Conversely, digital tools largely engaged the ventral visual stream, associated with conceptual and social cognition. A second behavioral experiment showed a pronounced tendency to anthropomorphize digital tools. A third experiment involving a priming task confirmed that digital tools activate the social brain. The discovery of two different neurocognitive systems for mechanical versus digital technology offers new insights into human-technology interaction and its implications for the evolution of the human mind
This dissertation looks at the impact of music on pupils in assessment situations, in particular on the concentration and stress that cycle 2 and 3 pupils may feel during an assessment. Indeed, the aim of any teacher is for pupils to understand, but in order to have proof of their progress, assessment is used. While there are tools to help pupils do as well as possible in assessments, they are a help from a knowledge point of view and not for the well-being of the pupil. A pupil in a good classroom climate conducive to teaching can concentrate at best, and the absence of stress plays a part in this concentration. The lack of tools for teachers to promote this well-being raises the question of what impact music can have on the concentration and stress of a student in a summative assessment situation. To answer this question, I set up an experiment using two exercises and alternating the presence or absence of music, in order to compare the results when the variable was present or absent. The students were then given a questionnaire to assess their feelings of stress. Summative assessment in its current written form is something that is very present throughout a pupil's schooling and can cause stress. The aim is to provide teachers with tools to improve the conditions of summative assessment.
This research dissertation focuses on innovative methods in the teaching and learning of English at primary school level. It is built around four hypotheses and is guided by the following research question: “To what extent are innovative methods for teaching and learning English in French primary schools mainly implemented in the classroom to develop oral skills?” In order to address this question, the study is structured into three parts. The first part is devoted to the theoretical framework, the second presents the research methodology, and the third outlines and analyses the results obtained.
International audienceHow can photography and discourse light on the relationship maintained by the elderly to their living spaces, and the way in which they grow old in them? This article is based on data collected as part of a socio-anthropological study. Eleven people living at home and in alternative housing have agreed to photograph and describe their living spaces by taking their own photographic images and by photo-elicitation interviews. This article shows that the relationship between discourse and images oscillates between the fact that they can express the same thing and their power to shed light on ambivalences in the perception that respondents have of the apparent ordinariness of their lifestyles. We then discuss the limits of this exploratory research: we highlight the possibility of staging offered by the chosen methodology; then, we discuss the choice of disposable cameras as a research tool, questioning our representations of aging.
