From Segregation to the Mainstream: Childhood Neighborhoods of Immigrants and their Descendants in France and Sweden
Although there is a considerable body of research on immigrant spatial assimilation, there is a lack of comparative studies that evaluate whether differences across contexts and outcomes are genuine, or merely a product of different research designs. In response, we carry out a
comprehensive analysis of childhood neighborhood contexts across multiple generations, comparing four spatial outcomes across two national contexts: France and Sweden. Our approach not only generates new evidence for both settings but also assesses the intergenerational development, multidimensionality, and generalizability of spatial assimilation. Our results provide clear evidence that spatial assimilation is occurring simultaneously across multiple domains in both France and Sweden. However, key differences emerge: in Sweden, neighborhood disadvantage for non-European immigrants and their children is initially pronounced but diminishes significantly in later generations, while in France, these disadvantages, although initially smaller, persist among the grandchildren of non-European immigrants
Singularités, défis et opportunités de la démographie subsaharienne
L’Afrique subsaharienne connait depuis le milieu du 20e siècle une croissance démographique sans précédent dans l’histoire. Le continent représente à nouveau aujourd’hui 18 % de la population mondiale, soit le même poids qu’au 16e siècle avant les chocs démographiques liés aux traites esclavagistes et à l’occupation coloniale. Mortalité et fécondité en baisse, recomposition des familles et de la nuptialité, migrations intracontinentales, transformations de la structure par âge de la population, les spécialistes de l’IRD et leurs partenaires explorent les singularités de cette évolution démographique accélérée. Celle-ci constitue un véritable défi pour les sociétés africaines, confrontées dans le même temps au changement climatique, au vieillissement de la population et aux conditions environnementales et sanitaires de l’explosion urbaine. Domain Adaptation for Mapping LCZs in Sub-Saharan Africa with Remote Sensing: A Comprehensive Approach to Health Data Analysis
Environment and population are closely linked, but their interactions remain challenging to assess. To fill this gap, modeling the environment at a fine resolution brings a significant value, if combined with population-based studies. This is particularly challenging in regions where the availability of both population and environmental data is limited. In low- and middle-income countries, many demographic and health data are from nationally representative household surveys which now provide approximate geolocations of the sampled households. In parallel, freely available remote sensing data, due to their high spatial and temporal resolution, make it possible to capture the local environment at any time. This study aims to correlate standard demographic and health information with a highresolution environment characterization derived from satellite data, encompassing both rural and urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa. We use the Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) conducted in 2017-2018 in Burkina Faso. We first present a deep semisupervised domain adaptation strategy based on the inter-tropical climatic characteristics of the country for precisely mapping Local Climate Zones (LCZs). This strategy models seasonal variations through contrastive learning to extract useful information for the mapping process. We then use this high-resolution LCZ map to characterize, in four groups, the immediate environment of the sampled households. We find a significant association between these local environments and malaria among households' children. Going beyond the traditional dichotomous urban/rural characterization, our results provide interesting insights for public health. This innovative method offers new avenues for exploring population and environment interactions, especially in the growing climate change concern

Formation sur l’anonymisation des données quantitatives
Dans le prolongement du projet SOFT, financé par l’AAP MSH-Bx 2023, le groupe local d’ingénieurs SO-MATé, en collaboration avec la PUD-Bx, organise une journée consacrée à l’anonymisation des données quantitatives. Cette formation s’inscrit également dans le cadre du projet LifeObs (https://lifeobs.site.ined.fr/), coordonné par l’INED, et pour lequel les PUD de Bordeaux (PUD-Bx) et de Strasbourg (PUD-S) travaillent en partenariat avec Julie Lenoir du Services des Enquêtes et Sondages (SES) de l’INED, qui animera cette journée et apportera son expertise dans l’anonymisation des données d’enquêtes

Inégalités de genre et de classe sociale dans le développement psychomoteur des enfants : une approche sociologique
Au cours de la petite enfance, les apprentissages corporels, langagiers et moteurs varient selon les caractéristiques sociales des enfants et de leurs familles. Cet article propose une description des inégalités dans les apprentissages en fonction du genre, de la classe sociale et à l’intersection de ces deux rapports sociaux. L’étude s’appuie sur une vaste enquête portant sur plus de 18 000 enfants nés en France hexagonale, la cohorte Elfe dont les données ont été recueillies auprès d’enfants à l’âge de 3 ans et demi ; elle mesure les compétences enfantines dans les domaines suivants : le langage, la motricité, l’autonomie corporelle, la sociabilité, la numération et l’écriture. Les résultats obtenus entrent en résonance avec la littérature relative à la différenciation des apprentissages les plus rentables scolairement, en soulignant notamment le gradient social du développement langagier. Ils mettent toutefois en lumière l’inversion de ce gradient social dans le domaine de l’autonomie corporelle
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lung cancer diagnoses and mortality: A nationwide study in France
Background
During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a reduction in the number of newly diagnosed cases of lung cancer has been reported worldwide, often associated with a higher proportion of cases diagnosed at an advanced stage compared with previous years.
Methods
Using the French National Hospital Database, we investigated incident lung cancer cases and their mortality during pandemic years 2020 and 2021, compared to predictions based on pre-pandemic years 2013–2019. Mortality was assessed up to 24 months following incidence date. Expected numbers of incident cases and all-cause deaths during the pandemic were estimated using Poisson regression models and survival was analyzed using Cox regressions.
Results
The database included 397,092 incident lung cancer cases in total, 20 % of whom underwent thoracic surgery. During the first pandemic wave (March–June 2020), there were 12 % i.e., 1940 fewer incident lung cancer cases than the expected figure (16,325), while no significant difference was found thereafter. Survival at 6 and 24 months improved steadily from 2013 to 2019 and continued to improve during pandemic years 2020–2021. However, during the first wave, a slight excess mortality was observed compared with predictions based on pre-pandemic trends.
Conclusions
The lower incidence observed during the first wave with no catch-up in the following periods could be explained by deaths among yet undiagnosed patients, either from COVID-19 or as a result of barriers to accessing healthcare. The excess mortality observed for both operated and non-operated patients may be attributable to delayed diagnosis, as well as to COVID-19-related deaths
