Facial Expressions Analysis Under Occlusions Based on Specificities of Facial Motion Propagation

    No full text
International audienceAlthough much progress has been made in the facial expression analysis field, facial occlusions are still challenging. The main innovation brought by this contribution consists in exploiting the specificities of facial movement propagation for recognizing expressions in presence of important occlusions. The movement induced by an expression extends beyond the movement epicenter. Thus, the movement occurring in an occluded region propagates towards neighboring visible regions. In presence of occlusions, per expression, we compute the importance of each unoccluded facial region and we construct adapted facial frameworks that boost the performance of per expression binary classifier. The output of each expression-dependant binary classifier is then aggregated and fed into a fusion process that aims constructing, per occlusion, a unique model that recognizes all the facial expressions considered. The evaluations highlight the robustness of this approach in presence of significant facial occlusions

Circulating tumour cells as a potential biomarker for lung cancer screening: a prospective cohort study

    No full text
International audienceBackground Lung cancer screening with low-dose chest CT (LDCT) reduces the mortality of eligible individuals. Bloodsignatures might act as a standalone screening tool, refine the selection of patients at risk, or help to classifyundetermined nodules detected on LDCT. We previously showed that circulating tumour cells (CTCs) could bedetected, using the isolation by size of epithelial tumour cell technique (ISET), long before the cancer was diagnosedradiologically. We aimed to test whether CTCs could be used as a biomarker for lung cancer screening. Methods We did a prospective, multicentre, cohort study in 21 French university centres. Participants had to beeligible for lung cancer screening as per National Lung Screening Trial criteria and have chronic obstructivepulmonary disease with a fixed airflow limitation defined as post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio of less than 0∙7.Any cancer, other than basocellular skin carcinomas, detected within the previous 5 years was the main exclusioncriterion. Participants had three screening rounds at 1-year intervals (T0 [baseline], T1, and T2), which involved LDCT,clinical examination, and a blood test for CTCs detection. Participants and investigators were masked to the results ofCTC detection, and cytopathologists were masked to clinical and radiological findings. Our primary objective was totest the diagnostic performance of CTC detection using the ISET technique in lung cancer screening, compared withcancers diagnosed by final pathology, or follow up if pathology was unavailable as the gold standard. This studyis registered with ClinicalTrials.gov identifier, number NCT02500693.Findings Between Oct 30, 2015, and Feb 2, 2017, we enrolled 614 participants, predominantly men (437 [71%]), aged65∙1 years (SD 6∙5), and heavy smokers (52∙7 pack-years [SD 21∙5]). 81 (13%) participants dropped out betweenbaseline and T1, and 56 (11%) did between T1 and T2. Nodules were detected on 178 (29%) of 614 baseline LDCTs.19 participants (3%) were diagnosed with a prevalent lung cancer at T0 and 19 were diagnosed with incident lungcancer (15 (3%) of 533 at T1 and four (1%) of 477 at T2). Extrapulmonary cancers were diagnosed in 27 (4%) ofparticipants. Overall 28 (2%) of 1187 blood samples were not analysable. At baseline, the sensitivity of CTC detectionfor lung cancer detection was 26∙3% (95% CI 11∙8–48∙8). ISET was unable to predict lung cancer or extrapulmonarycancer development

ROMANI DI RAZZA.Romanism in fascist and racist iconography after 1938.

    No full text
International audienceFascism has always claimed its links with the Roman Empire. After 1938, the Romanizing ideology is put at the service of racism, and Auguste becomes the symbol of the triumph of the Empire and also of a race: the blood of the Romans would still flow, as it was at imperial era, in the veins of Italians. Many historians point out that Augustus had saved the « Latin race » by refusing citizenship to provincials, and miscegenation too. Fascists claim the purity of blood and the moral and physical resemblance of Italy to the Rome of Augustus. The emperor becomes the symbol of classical beauty, dignity and elegance. They appear a lot of images appearing comparing the « typically Italian » physiognomy, responding to the fascist canons, to the statues of the Augustan Rome, to underline their affinities. Here we analyse a choice of images and articles dealing with this subject, which has become an unavoidable theme of the last fascism.

Kernel regression estimation with errors-in-variables for random fields

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, we investigate kernel regression estimation when the data are contaminated by measurement errors in the context of random fields. We establish sharp rate of weak and strong convergence of the kernel regression estimator under both the ordinary smooth and super-smooth assumptions. Numerical studies were carried out in order to illustrate the performance of the estimator with simulated data

L'interaction de la dimension santé, plaisir et bien-être dans les stations balnéaires Britanniques: le cas de Skegness sur la côte du Lincolnshire

    No full text
International audienceThis article seeks to demonstrate the vitality of the health dimension in the growth of Skegness as a seaside resort. It shows the way changes in the medical profession, especially the use of seawaters for the treatment of diseases, contributed to the growth of seaside resorts in Britain. It highlights the way the health culture interacted with the principle of pleasure to contribute to the growth of seaside resorts. This paper also seeks to explore the potential role the National Health Service (NHS) could play in the transformation of Skegness into a wellness destination especially with the NHS emphasis on wellness as a new strategy to prevent and manage health problems, the constant inflow of an elderly generation into the resort, and an ageing population whose health needs are changing

Validation of Affect-tag Affective and Cognitive Indicators

    No full text
The Affect-tag solution measures physiological signals to deliver indicators derived from cognitive science. In order to provide the most accurate and effective results, a database of electrodermal activity signals acquired using the Affect-tag A1 band was created. An experimental paradigm was designed to measure action-taking, autonomic regulation, cognitive load, emotions and stress, affects, and social stress. The Affect-tag Emotional Power, Emotional Density, and Cognitive Load affective and cognitive indicators were refined based on the physiological responses of 48 participants during these tasks. Statistical significance was obtained for all indicators in tasks they were designed to measure resulting in a total accuracy score of 89% for the combined indicators. Data obtained during this study will be further analyzed to define emotional and affective states

The Social Sustainability of Public Debt in the Framework of Middle East and North African Countries: Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey

    No full text
International audienceThe paper’s main objective is to analyze the social sustainability of the external public debt of some MENA countries, namely, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey between 1990 and 2018. The study carries out a dual statistical and econometric analysis to determine the impact of external public debt on the population welfare. The first analysis aims to examine the evolution of the debt social sustainability indicators and the second uses the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) panel data estimation technique. Statistical analysis reveals that the external public debt service weighs heavily on public spending in health, education, and public investment. While the econometric study establishes that the ratio of external public debt as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has a negative effect on the population’s standards of living. The study concludes that external public debt in MENA countries has been used to finance non-productive expenditures, which have no effect on the population’s living conditions. It highlights the need to consider the views of both debtors and creditors to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable approach to public debt. The latter should integrate the social and environmental consequences of debt on the well-being and living conditions of the population
