Treibhausgase und Aerosole – Szenarien und Unsicherheiten

Greenhouse gases and aerosols - scenarios and uncertainties: Greenhouse gas emissions are the main cause of man-made climate change. The atmospheric concentration of the most important of these gases is still increasing and reaches a new record every year. Despite the annual world climate conferences, mankind will hardly be able to meet the binding limit of 1.5 or 2.0 degrees Celsius temperature increase set by the Paris Agreement. I is crucial reducing emissions of carbon dioxide, by far the most important greenhouse gas. If greenhouse gas emissions can actually be stoppt by the middle of the century, which is absolutely necessary to comply with the Paris Agreement, it is still scientifically unclear how the global climate will develop. The interactions of carbon dioxide with the ocean and land vegetation, and those of methane with wetlands are difficult to predict. The climate impact of anthropogenic, man-made aerosols is also only partially understood. This means that climate mitigation, but also adaptation to unavoidable climate changes, face major challenges

    El Niño: Direkte und Fernwirkungen

El Niño: direct and long-distance effects - The direct effects of El Niño are found in the coastal areas of the tropical Pacific (Peru, Chile, northern Australia and south-east Asia). India is also affected by El Niño. Due to the drought, there is less moisture available for the monsoon rains. At high temperatures, monsoon rainfall (June-Sept) decreases significantly. Significant weather anomalies are also observed in the North Pacific, North America and the North Atlantic. In contrast to El Niño, La Niña causes an increase in the frequency of huricans in the tropical Atlantic. There are only a few regions in the world that remain unaffected by these weather events

Anpassungsmaßnahmen in Afrika gegen Wetterextreme am Beispiel des westafrikanischen Sahel

Adaptation measures in Africa against weather extremes using the example of the West African Sahel: The Sahel is considered one of the hotspots of climate change, although the region has hardly contributed to climate change. After the severe droughts towards the end of the 20th century, rainfall is increasing again, but global warming and further weather extremes continue to cause problems for agriculture in the Sahel now and in the future. In response, smallholder farmers have developed a variety of adaptation measures, from cultivation techniques for water storage and soil improvement to agroforestry measures, which proved largely successful. Recently, however, political crises have made the security situation in key Sahel states worse, making it difficult to predict how this development will continue

Das Klimaschutzprogramm der EU und Bundesregierung

The climate protection programme of the EU and the German government: The risks of temporarily overshooting the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C global warming target is high, even with immediate action. The EU Green Deal conveys Europe’s ambition to align with the Paris Agreement. The EU’s central objective is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Beyond the transition to a net-zero economy, the bloc strives to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits during the second half of the century. If sufficiently deployed, global warming could be halted - and even reversed - through net negative emissions. Delivering on the EU’s climate targets will require effective implementation of the Green Deal – particularly at the national level. Beyond 2030, institutional reforms will be essential to sustain progress towards climate neutrality and net negative. Moreover, the EU should prioritize international collaboration, partnering with other countries to address climate change on a global scale

Wie beeinflusst die Verdunstung von Regen das Klima und die Wetterextreme?

How does the evaporation of rain affect the climate and weather extremes? Estimates show that more than half of the raindrops formed in clouds evaporate on their way to the ground. The evaporation of raindrops not only reduces the amount of rain on the Earth‘s surface, the associated cooling of the air can also lead to violent downbursts and trigger a chain of processes that can have a strong influence on cloud formation and the climate. With the help of high-resolution simulations and observations, important progress has been made in recent years in our understanding of the processes involved and their influence on weather extremes. However, our understanding of possible changes in rain evaporation with global warming, and whether these changes tend to amplify or weaken global warming, is still limited. There are promising new observational tools and new approaches to better modelling the interaction of clouds and rain drops. These could soon provide answers to the open questions
