A business model pattern arrives... and then? A translation perspective on business model innovation in established firms

    No full text
International audienceThis study examines business model innovation (BMI) in an established firm. We investigate the case of a Swedish utility company that adopted and implemented a business model (BM) pattern originating from outside the firm. We draw upon Scandinavian translation theory to understand the micro-level dynamics of how BMI unfolds. Our findings show that the BM pattern is disassembled into its constituent parts, that these are translated separately and, little by little, (re)assembled into a whole to form a new BM. This process involves several loops of translation activated by the interplay between five practices: formulating, engaging, resisting, anchoring, and energizing. On the basis of our findings, we develop a BM translation framework. We thereby contribute to a better understanding of the micro-level perspective on BMI initiated by the adoption of a BM pattern. We also reveal that BMI processes triggered by BM patterns from outside differ from those taking place when a new BM is entirely developed within a firm

Economic policy uncertainty and analyst behaviours: Evidence from the United Kingdom

    No full text
International audienceThis paper documents that both domestic and crosscountry economic policy uncertainty have significant impacts on the behaviours of domestic analysts in the United Kingdom. Specifically, domestic economic policy uncertainty has significant negative impacts on analyst earnings forecast accuracy, dispersion, and both analyst recommendation upgrades and downgrades, whereas it has no significant impact on analyst coverage in the United Kingdom. An industry analysis shows that the effects of policy uncertainties on analyst behaviours vary across industries. Moreover, European and global economic policy uncertainty have similar crosscountry impacts as U.K. policy uncertainty on analyst behaviours in the United Kingdom, whereas U.S. policy uncertainty exhibits different impacts. This study presents novel and comprehensive evidence of the impacts of policy uncertainty on an important information intermediary that has significant influences on capital market efficiency, providing practical implications for investors, analysts, corporate managers, and policy makers

International audienceStarting from a reflection on the concept of dispositif, the article questions some approaches to design and analyzestheir use in the field of health and wellness through two examplesof connected objects (Fitbit and Apple Watch). Starting from theobservation that some mobile health devices are not welladapted to users, we then present the Som’Health researchprogram on chronic sleep disorders that we have been carryingout since 2016. Based on this fieldwork, we propose a newapproach to the design of mobile health devices for monitoringchronic diseases, grounded in two theoretical models: the theoryof use and the ethics of design.

The Effects of the COVID-19 Outbreak on Selective Exposure: Evidence from 17 Countries

    No full text
International audienceA widely believed claim is that citizens tend to selectively exposethemselves to like-minded information. However, when individualsfind the information useful, they are more likely to consume crosscuttingsources. While crises such as terror attacks and pandemics canenhance the utility of cross-cutting information, empirical evidence onthe role of real-world external threats in selective exposure is scarce. This paper examines the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study to testthe extent to which citizens were exposed to information from crosscuttingsources on traditional and social media after the outbreak.Utilizing a two-wave panel survey among 14,218 participants across17 countries – conducted before and after the initial outbreak – weshow that citizens concerned about COVID-19 were more exposed tocross-cutting information on traditional and social media. The positiverelationship with cross-cutting exposure to traditional news was strongerin countries where governments adopted less stringent policyresponses, and in countries with greater pandemic severity andweaker democratic institutions. Our comparative approach thussheds light on the social and political contexts in which cross-cuttingexposure can occur
