Who shall succeed? An examination of manager overconfidence and CEO selection
International audienceBy categorizing managerial confidence attributes into overconfidence, rationality and diffidence with the methodology used in the finance literature, we investigate how company boards strategically select chief executive officer (CEO) replacements from the senior management pool with different confidence attributes. In normal retirements, company boards tend to select succeeding managers with the same confidence attribute as retiring CEOs. If boards fire company CEOs, they tend to select rational successors irrespective of the confidence attributes of the ousted CEOs. Such board inclination of picking rational successors also occurs when corporate operation is at the recession stage or corporate strategy is changed surrounding succession. The evidence indicates that the managerial confidence attribute is an important consideration of the board in the CEO selection process and that the board deliberately selects the CEO with a certain attribute to move the firm in a planned direction
Managing client–consultant relationships to derive benefits from ERP projects
International audiencePurpose Enterprise resource planning (ERP) consultants have the expertise required to understand the specific contextual needs of an ERP client, implement tailored business processes that meet those needs, and ensure that no potential benefit offered by the ERP remains unexplored by the client. However, conflicts between ERP clients and consultants are a significant source of non-benefit realisation, making managing client–consultant agency crucial to ERP post-implementation benefits realisation. This paper aims to elucidate how managing client–consultant agency affects the benefits derived from ERP systems. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses microfinance institutions in 15 sub-Saharan African countries to explore different paths through which managing client–consultant agency leads to benefit realisation in ERP projects. It uses partial least squares structural equation modelling to analyse data from 127 managers and explains the results using insights from agency theory and the information system (IS) success model. Findings This paper reveals three routes through which contractual agreements and conflict resolution strategies lead to benefits realisation in ERP projects. Originality/value This is the first study that attempts to provide quantitative evidence of how managing the complex relationship between ERP project stakeholders affects ERP project success. It also contributes a novel theoretical model for ERP benefits realisation to complement existing research on ERP agency issues, critical success factors, and benefits realisation

How managers approach data analytics: a typology through a Resource Orchestration perspective
International audiencePurpose-This article aims to examine the factors that influence how managers approach data analytics. Design/methodology/approach-The authors draw on content analysis of 34 in-depth interviews with managers in various sectors in France. Findings-Using Resource Orchestration Theory as the theoretical lens, the findings show that an understanding of the importance of data analytics, having the skills to effectively use data analytics and the capability to integrate data analytics throughout organizations impact the approach adopted by managers. Based on these interrelated factors, a typology of four different approaches is identified: buyer-users, segmenters, promoters and implementers. Research limitations/implications-The authors' study reflects results from multiple industries instead of one particular sector. Delving deeper into the practices of distinct sectors with respect to the authors' typology would be of interest. Practical implications-The study points to the role of managers and more specifically managers' perception of the opportunities and challenges related to data analytics. These perceptions emerge in managers' skills and capacity to understand and integrate dimensions of data analytics that go beyond one's areas of expertise in order to create capabilities towards an organization's advantage. Originality/value-The authors contribute by revealing three interrelated factors influencing how managers approach data analytics in managers' organizations. The authors address the need expressed by practitioners to better identify factors responsible for adoption and effective use of data analytics
International audienceRefugee Food Festival is a culinary event created in 2016. Endorsed by French chefs, it seeks to promote refugee cooks and encourage their professional integration. Available on their website, a section “Les Chefs” displays a threefold goal: feature the participants’ singular personalities, characterize their culinary practices and open up a space of encounter between French gastronomy and “culinary exoticism” (Régnier, 2004). The changes in identity materialized by the visual portrait and narration of the participants offer a unique angle for observing the semio-discursive construction process of a “common culinary space” stretched between “domestication” and “foreignization” (Stano et Boutaud, 2015). The study highlights that, among other processes, the uniqueness of the culinary practice and the figure of the mother legitimize the professional (re) conversion of refugees into «chefs». Also, merging gastronomies — as for the dishes prepared and the desirable places where they are elaborated — is a central ambition that organizes their de-conflictualized convergence.

Information and the arrival rate of option trading volume
International audienceIn this paper we investigate the interaction between liquidity and information in the options market and its impact on the pricing of the underlying asset. We model option trade duration and volume jointly, for the first time, as a natural measure of options' trading intensity and we associate it with differential degrees of information present in option trades. We report a highly significant association between option trading intensity with contemporaneous and future underlying volatility and returns, which is robust to the presence of other information measures, market factors and structural forms
Commodity markets dynamics: What do cross-commodities over different nearest-to-maturities tell us?
International audienceIn this paper we investigate cross-commodity futures markets connectedness over different nearest-to-maturities. We thus implement time and time-frequency estimations for two constructed baskets of commodities, classified based on common delivery months. Using daily data spanning the period 1995–2020, we provide a set of stylized facts on the extent to which commodity markets are integrated or segmented. More specifically, our results show that the total connectedness is broadly insensitive to maturity. However, after 2008 financial crisis, the connectedness among commodity futures prices increases when the maturity increases. Furthermore, the overall connectedness amplifies during crises periods compared to tranquil periods. Moreover, certain pairwise markets are comparatively highly linked such as crude oil and heating oil, wheat and corn, corn and soybean, and soybean and soybean oil. The results also demonstrate that crude oil and heating oil are net transmitters all the time and across maturities, while natural gas, gold, and wheat are net receivers all the time and across maturities. More interestingly, the frequency decomposition reveals that most of periods of high total connectedness are driven mostly by high frequency components, which may indicate that commodity markets process information rapidly, except for the COVID-19 crisis period where total connectedness has been driven by lower frequency components
