Citius, Altius, Fortius : Managers’ quest for heroic leader identities

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, we draw on Foucault’s concept “governmentality” to show how a cohort of middle-aged senior managers who engaged in competitive endurance sports fabricated (avowed) “heroic” leader identities drawing on this repertoire of discursive resources. Neoliberalism constitutes a form of governmentality which encourages people to regard themselves as autonomous and to aspire to personal fulfillment by investing entrepreneurially in themselves as “human capital.” Healthism, which requires individuals be responsible for their own health and wellbeing, is one program by which this is accomplished. We analyze managers’ talk about themselves as people who self-examined, and sought continually to transform (improve) themselves, to avow identities as superior (heroic) leaders. Our study contributes to the literature on governmentality by showing how in neoliberalism “healthism” constructs managers as enterprising selves

Women in the Digital World edited volume

    No full text
International audienceWomen’s existence in the digital world has been closely studied by scholars and attracted the attention of activists worldwide. Women, like men, early on saw the Internet as a potentially powerful and liberating tool that would help them find groups or communities with similar aims and interests. Today there is more awareness of the deleterious effects of unconstrained online speech such as online violence, ridicule, silencing, and threats against women.Women in the Digital World brings together the latest academic research on women online and includes chapters on political speech, gendered online violence, dealing with sexual assaults, marginalization of women politicians, and how women participate (or don’t) via online environments. The interdisciplinary research in this volume brings together communications studies, gender studies, sociology, politics, and computer science and is essential reading for those seeking to understand a growing field. The book should be of interest also for activists and NGOs who seek to deepen their knowledge on the place of females online

Corporate diversification, investment efficiency and the business cycle

    No full text
International audienceI document the time-varying investment efficiency of conglomerates compared with singlesegment firms. I find that, during recessions, conglomerates have higher Q-sensitivity of investment than do stand-alone firms, in contrast to the relationship during expansion periods. I also find that conglomerates, with the benefits from internal capital markets, exhibit increased dependence of investment on internal capital during recessionary periods, while stand-alone firms significantly increase cash retention and deviate their investment from its optimal level more severely. I examine the effect of the degree of diversification and find consistent evidence on investment efficiency and deployment of internal capital. I also provide evidence that conglomerates with stronger governance do not improve investment efficiency during recession, which suggests that agency costs cannot fully explain the changes in investment of conglomerates

Machine autonomy for rehabilitation of elderly people: A trade-off between machine intelligence and consumer trust

    No full text
International audienceThis is an exploratory study with the objective to understand elderly people’s expected behavior to accept and use machine autonomy controlled by ambient intelligence. It was conducted on a proposed theoretical framework, the expected trust model for machine autonomy (ETM4MA). A detailed survey was collected among elderly people living at home with their family members in a developing country, Bangladesh. Based on the results obtained from structural equation modeling (SEM) on the sample, it was observed that elderly people’s acceptance of automation systems driven by ambient intelligence as a substitute for caregiving support directly from human beings was linked to their concerns about emotional belongingness and social interaction as well as their ability to use the technology. Thus, in developing trust in this machine autonomy, their expectations around personal ability and the feeling of caring are two important issues for elderly people. To form the behavioral intention to accept this machine autonomy, trust plays a crucial role; however, this might vary depending on the differences in personality and behavioral attitude

La mindfulness , un levier pour un empowerment « conscient » des managers

    No full text
International audienceThis research focuses on the effects of mindfulness on the psychological empowerment of managers at work. The study is based on an 8-month experiment conducted with 13 managers and 35 employees in two companies. It shows how a personal practice aiming at the liberation of the mind (mindfulness) affects psychological empowerment, an organizational concept that aims at improving the performance of employees in the company. We suggest that this link between mindfulness and psychological empowerment can be a vector for the development of critical awareness and for putting individuals into action at work. This research thus brings out a "conscious" empowerment and proposes a definition of it. In light of these results, the study proposes recommendations for the implementation of mindfulness in companies and presents its limitations.

Choice for sustainable meals at staff restaurants: influence of at-home food habits and food triggers

    No full text
International audiencePurpose Collective catering sector is increasingly offering alternative and more sustainable food propositions, but their success rests on their reception by guests and changes induced in individual behaviors. The authors investigate food-change determinants by examining the relationship between food behavior at staff restaurants and at home. Design/methodology/approach In an experiment over four days conducted in three staff restaurants, the authors monitored the behavioral changes and motivations of guests (n = 599) offered choices between standard and sustainable options for meat, fish, dairy products, fruit-based desserts and a vegetarian dish. The calculation of a “sustainable consumption score,” based on actual consumption at a restaurant by a subsample (n = 160) of guests gives an indication of interest for sustainable options. Findings Higher overall choices were observed for vegetarian dishes and for the sustainable meat options rather than for the sustainable fish and desserts options, thus suggesting contrasted perceptions of the sustainable alternatives. The results revealed two profiles of consumers with contrasting scores. The “lower receptive guests” had lower commitment to sustainable food at home and at staff restaurants, while the “higher receptive guests” found in the intervention meaningful propositions for pursuing their existing at-home commitment. Research limitations/implications Long-term research would be required to verify whether repeated sustainable offers can break down deep-rooted choices and instill durable changes among consumers with lower commitment to sustainable food. This research contributes to the identification of some types of food that are more suitable for sustainable-oriented interventions. Practical implications Some food triggers are identified to further norm activation among the lower receptive profile of consumers. Originality/value By addressing continuities/discontinuities between at-home and at-restaurant consumption and mobilizing the “norm-activation” concept, the authors question the efficiency of sustainable food offers at work

Exploiting the dynamics of commodity futures curves

    No full text
International audienceThe Nelson-Siegel framework is employed to model the term structure of commodity futures prices. Exploiting the information embedded in the level, slope and curvature parameters, we develop novel investment strategies that assume short-term continuation of recent parallel, slope or butterfly movements of futures curves. Systematic strategies based on the change in the slope generate significant profits that are unrelated to previously documented risk factors and can survive reasonable transaction costs. Further analysis demonstrates that the profitability of the slope strategy increases with investor sentiment and is in part a compensation for the drawdowns incurred during economic slowdowns. The profitability can also be magnified through timing and persists under alternative specifications of the Nelson-Siegel model

Mode responsable sur Instagram : encastrement de la communication de marque et de la communication environnementale

    No full text
