Herding towards carbon neutrality: The role of investor attention
International audienceThis paper explores the herding towards carbon neutrality in the Chinese stock market. We find that herding towards carbon neutrality does dynamically exist in the Chinese stock market. Specifically, herding is pronounced during the bear markets and market stress periods such as the post-COVID-19 period. There is a size effect for the herding behavior. Investor attention could significantly decrease the magnitude of herding. Our results hold in various robustness tests. This paper provides some important implications on the style investing, fads, and carbon neutrality

Justifying an Invasion: When Is Disinformation Successful?
International audienceConventional wisdom suggests that social media, especially when used by authoritarian powers with nefarious aims, leaves citizens of democratic countries vulnerable to psychological influence campaigns. But such concerns overlook predispositions among recipients of false claims to reject (or to endorse) conspiratorial narratives. Analyzing responses from a survey fielded in 19 countries, we find that it is a preexisting conspiracy outlook at the individual level, more so than media diets, which consistently predicts rating Russia's pretenses for the invasion as more accurate. In all countries, individuals who view the world in general with a conspiratorial mindset are more likely to believe war-related disinformation. Receiving news via YouTube, Facebook, or TikTok is also associated with greater belief in Russian narratives justifying the invasion in several countries, but these relationships are weaker compared to those observed for conspiracy thinking. Without downplaying a potential positive role for media interventions, the findings highlight the importance of a deeper understanding of the underlying causes of conspiratorial thinking
Economic sentiment and the cryptocurrency market in the post-COVID-19 era
International audienceThis paper analyzes the interactions, dependence and dynamic network connectedness among economic based-news sentiment index (ESI) and the top eight crypto-currencies with particular attention on the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. We explore these features by applying novel econometric frameworks such as wavelets coherence, cross quantilogram, and DCC-GARCH-based connectedness techniques on a dataset that covers both the first and second waves of the COVID-19 outbreak. First, results from the wavelets approach show convincing evidence of low covariances between ESI and both returns and volume while results of correlations highlight the potential diversification opportunities of some crypto-currencies, especially during bullish market condition since the COVID-19 pandemic. Results from the directional predictability show that across all market conditions, there are strong evidence that ESI can predict the price return of stable-coins (Tether and USD) compared to the price return of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogicoin that ESI predicts only under bullish market condition. For changes in volume, we find that the predictive power of ESI is more pronounced and heterogeneous, cutting across different quantiles of the different classes of cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin (BTC) and Dogicoin (DOG). The analysis of dynamic connectedness show that the level of connectedness among ESI and both price return and changes in volume of trade of the chosen cryptocurrencies increased sharply during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In both cases, Tether and ESI are the main destination of volatility shocks Ripple and Bitcoin are the dominant sources of shocks. We document the importance of economic sentiment for investors in the management of their cryptocurrency assets during periods of financial downturns as witnessed since the COVID-19 pandemic

Terroir store brand authenticity
AbstractPurposeThe objective of this exploratory study was to investigate the communication themes that retailers should prioritise to convey terroir store brands’ (TSBs) authenticity and the impact of their authenticity on several variables (i.e. value, attitude, trust, intentions and effective purchases). TSBs combine a variety of products that adhere to stringent standards associated with a terroir. Charters et al. (2017) referred to a terroir as ‘a resource based on unique physical origins and shared cultural personification that shape a product’s benefits into a meaningful value proposition’ (p. 755). Three communication themes were studied: the ingredients’ origin, traditional local recipes and the producer’s history in a region (terroir). Design/methodology/approachAn experiment was conducted in a store laboratory. A total of 420 consumers representative of the French population were randomly assigned to four independent groups in a between-subjects study design. They shopped in the store laboratory with a section dedicated to a TSB. Each of the independent samples in this experiment was exposed to posters in the store laboratory related to the three communication themes studied. The control group did not see any posters. FindingsThe study showed that the level of TSB authenticity was highest for the communication theme related to the traditional local recipes of the culinary dishes offered by the TSB. Next came the theme related to the ingredients’ origin, followed by the producer’s history in the terroir. Moreover, for the communication theme related to the traditional local recipes, TSB authenticity had a direct impact on value, trust and intentions. Moreover, the link between intentions and effective purchases of TSB products has only been established for this specific communication theme.Originality/valueFirst, this study adds to the limited research on TSBs’ authenticity and identifies the communication themes retailers should use to promote such brands. It also proposes an integrative model of the consequences of TSBs’ authenticity in the retailing field that highlights the direct and indirect links (through value, attitude, trust and intentions) between authenticity and consumers’ effective purchases. Finally, it indicates the kind of discourse on TSBs that conveys their authenticity
Consumer engagement with restaurant brands on Instagram: the mediating role of consumer-related factors
International audienceConsumers’ digital engagement can bring various benefits to both brands and consumers. Besides, few studies investigated the outcomes of engagement with restaurant brands on Instagram. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of consumer engagement (CE) with restaurant brands on consumer-related factors (namely, consumer’s brand knowledge, perceived enjoyment and consumer social interaction) and brand-related factors (namely, e-WOM and brand reputation), as well as the mediating role of consumer-related factors. The sample consisted of 394 Instagram followers of restaurant/coffee shop brands, and covariance-based structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were used to assess the hypothesized relationships. The results show that CE with restaurant brands on Instagram enhances brand-related outcomes as well as consumer-related outcomes. Moreover, consumer-related factors partially mediate these relationships. The findings of this study provide insights for restaurant managers and digital marketers to stimulate consumer-brand engagement. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the first that examines the effect of CE with restaurant brands on consumer- and brand-related outcomes on Instagram. The context of the study is Iran, which adds to the literature on CE that mainly focuses on developed countries
Unlocking Social Media Success: How Prosumers Drive Brand Engagement through Authentic Conversations with Consumers
International audienceThis research examines whether prosumer‐generated (vs. firm‐generated) content fosters consumer engagement through content relevance and perceived content sponsorship. Four between‐subjects experiments ( N = 1048) show that prosumer‐led (vs. firm‐led) conversations, mediated by perceived content sponsorship and content relevance, generate higher engagement. Furthermore, consumer engagement increases significantly when prosumers share hedonic content and disclose information about their identity. A fifth study, a qualitative investigation with brand managers and marketing practitioners, further validates and extends these findings, providing nuanced insights in the form of four prosumer‐led engagement strategies for consumer engagement. These strategies have practical implications for companies seeking to leverage prosumers in social media marketing. Together, the current work broadens the research scope of prosumers from content co‐creators to drivers of brand engagement, while revealing the factors that increase the effectiveness of prosumer‐led social media content. Specifically, this research suggests that content type and authenticity are fundamental criteria for choosing a prosumer to engage social media brand followers. From a managerial viewpoint, the findings indicate that companies should identify, connect, and engage with online prosumers, as they will actively contribute towards improving consumer engagement levels
Political Connections and Shareholder Support
International audienceWe study investors’ preferences for corporate political connections in the U.S. using a novel measure; shareholder votes given to individual directors. We find that, after fully accounting for all firm-year specific information and a wide range of director characteristics, politically connected directors on average do not obtain significantly greater shareholder support. During our sample period (2010-2020), we observe a diminishing popularity of politically connected directors. Political alignment to the incumbent government matters in the sense that Democrat directors are viewed as valuable to shareholders during the Obama administration. However, during Donald Trump’s presidency a Democrat party affiliation instead turned into a liability. We also find that shareholders have a stronger preference for politically connected directors in heavily regulated industries, suggesting that board members can alleviate regulatory risk. Our study has implications for director selection and the role of political connections in shaping corporate governance practices
