METHODS OF ADAPTIVE REUSE IN ALEXANDRIA’S BUILDINGS WITH HERITAGE VALUES
Due to the rapid progress in the digital technology, using 3D modelling and augmented reality in architecture, now we can transform, create qualitative and sustainable changes in the interior architecture of our architectural heritage, to achieve sustainable cities, this study of the interior architectural solutions developed between architectural heritage, digital registration processes, and parametric construction and fabrication systems. Also using of Information Systems in recording and documenting buildings and archaeological areas.
It helps in designing through computer systems “Virtual Reality” to determine methods of conservation and dealing with archaeological areas and buildings. Using information networks to exchange information globally and locally on urban heritage and methods of preserving and dealing with it this progress in the digital technologies, minimize the construction, adaptive reuse and conservation costs.
This study describes the different ways and benefits of using the digital technology, which can tailor materials, styles and functions into bespoke building components with a new notion of materiality, style and function in interior architectural transformation projects of buildings with heritage values. The study addresses the adaptive reuse of interior architecture of our architectural heritage through the latest digital technology methods in treatment of the architectural heritage while maintaining the relationship between the technical value of old and modern

When he wrote his very first play, Willy Protagoras enfermé dans les toilettes, Wajdi Mouawad was only 23 years old. In this tragedy, he talks about freedom’s right, and wonders about the limits that society builds around that liberty. In this play, the nicest apartment of the building is divided between two families that have complicated relations between love and hate. One day, Nelly decides to leave this masquerade, while her brother, Protagoras, locks himself into the toilets and forbids anyone to enter. He refuses to listen to his parents, to negotiate with the squatters or to deal with the neighbors. He refuses to compromise or to abdicate his freedom. But this revolt is but the echo of the socio-political Lebanese reality where Mouawad was born. And since this first play, the playwright hasn’t stopped questioning this intricate reality. We will try to prove that the protagonist’s confinement is the reflection of the constraint state of a whole country, or a whole generation, in a changing spatiotemporal frame
QUALITY OF LIFE BETWEEN WORKING AND NON-WORKINGPALESTINIAN WOMEN
This study tackles a number of variables that form the core of positive psychology: self-efficacy, optimism, the estimations of physical health, mental health, happiness and satisfaction, in addition to the variable of healthy behavior which is deemed a new-comer in Arab studies. The study, thus, seeks to determine the differences between these variable in the light of sex, as well as the relation between healthy behavior and the variables of the study. It also seeks to identify the factors that can be extracted from the correlation coefficients among the scales used, and finally to identify the variables that may predict healthy behaviors by sex. The sample of the study included 370 male and female Lebanese students at Beirut Arab University. Their ages ranged from 17 to 22 years. Four scales were used: a self-report for the physical health, the mental health, happiness and satisfaction of life, as well as a healthy behavior scale, all developed by Ahmed Abdel Khalek. The results of the study revealed statistically significant differences between the males and the females on the variables: in terms of the healthy behavior (the means of females was higher), the mental health, the happiness (the means of males was higher). There was also a significant correlations between the variable, all in accordance with sex. Using factorial analysis of the correlation coefficients between the scales used, two factors were extracted. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine how far the variables of the study contribute to the interpretation of variance in the dependent variable of the two samples. It was shown that the most important variables predicting healthy behavior concerning the sample of males include optimism, self-efficacy, and physical health. As for the female sample, self-efficacy and physical health were predictors of healthy behavior. It was observed that the two regression models for both males and females coincide in the independent variables: self-efficacy and physical health, which predict and affect healthy behavior
CARBON NEUTRAL URBAN SPACES UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE CASE STUDY: RENOVATION OF SIDI GABER NEIGHBORHOOD IN ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT
With growing pressure from the public on governments and organizations to address climate change, the term ‘carbon neutral’ has become increasingly used in recent years. Carbon neutral is an emerging definition that relates to measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon energy used by either a building or an organization as a whole. Buildings are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions when they operated by fossil fuel energy resources. Sustainable urban development is essential issue to enhance the quality of life of city residents and to decrease the negative impact of conventional type of energy through using the renewable energy resources. This research discusses the issue of the planning future sustainable cities and how to apply all the innovative renewable energy solutions for construction and operation of these developments. It aims to achieve the criteria of renovation existing conventional neighborhood to be a prototype of carbon neutral urban area and maximize the benefits of sustainable technologies through an integrated planning and design approaches. The research’s case study concentrates on renovating of Sidi Gaber neighborhood and its surroundings in Alexandria city, Egypt as a prototype for a high quality. of life where inhabitants can find the carbon is neutral through applying the sustainable development criteria. Moreover, carbon measurements and residents’ questionnaire are used to achieve the proposed renovation alternatives according to the sustainability criteria
ACHIEVING VISUAL COMFORT IN UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL SPACES:A DESIGN FRAMEWORK FOR RESPONSIVE KINETIC SKIN
Achieving human comfort in a space is an architectural necessity. Feeling comfort is related to the sense organs network, such as the eyes, ears, nose, tactile sensors, heat sensors and brain. In fact, last few decades has witnessed the integration of many technologies and trends into the field of responsive architecture; among which kinetic architecture has been significant. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to achieve visual comfort in educational spaces in universities, while arguing that a responsive kinetic skin is to be an effective mean for achievement. That should help refreshing student and enhancing their educational spaces visually, by considering various factors, such as the light transmitted through the kinetic system and the colors of kinetic units. Consequently, student health will be enhanced mentally and psychologically. In the thesis, several kinetic skin alternatives will be simulated digitally, to choose one of them that will be applied and tested as a physical model (scale1/1) in one of the universities spaces. The outcome of this thesis is giving a framework for designers and architects to design responsive kinetic skin in universities respecting visual comfort of students. This framework will be presented through a graphical user interface (GUI) that can be easily used by architects
INFLUENCE OF NANO-AG ADDITION ON PHASE FORMATION AND EXCESS CONDUCTIVITY ANALYSIS OF (CU0.5TL0.5)-1223 SUPERCONDUCTING PHASE
Ceramic superconducting samples of type (nano-Ag)xCu0.5Tl0.5Ba2Ca2Cu3O10-δ, 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 3.0 wt.%, were successfully synthesized via single step solid-state reaction technique at 850 ºC and under ambient pressure. The samples were characterized by XRD and SEM. Obtained data revealed that the highest grains connectivity volume fraction was detected for the sample with x = 0.15 wt.%. The electrical properties of the prepared samples was examined using the electrical resistivity measurements, and the results proved that the highest superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed at x = 0.15 wt.%. Furthermore, the fluctuation conductivity Δσ(T), above Tc, was analyzed as a function of reduced temperature, t=(T-T_c^mf)/(T_c^mf ), using Aslamazov and Larkin (AL) theory and its modified form given by Lawrence-Doniach (LD) model. Excess conductivity analysis showed crossover between two dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) with decreasing temperature for all samples. The highest crossover temperature T2D-3D was observed for x = 1.5 wt.%, which showed the smallest coherence length along c-axis ξ(0), Fermi velocity vF, Fermi energy EF and interlayer coupling ν in these samples
DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:THE CASE OF ELECTORAL DISTRICT AND REPRESENTATION IN LEBANON
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development addresses democracy in Sustainable Development Goal 16 recognizing the indivisible links between peaceful societies and effective, accountable and inclusive institutions. Sustainable Development Goal 16 calls on UN Member States to promote responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making, and to build effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels. Thus, Elections are an integral part of the Sustainable Development Goal 16: “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” offer specific guidelines to tackle imperative challenges such as building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions; guaranteeing election integrity and trust; and ensuring responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels. In Lebanon, the new electoral law adopted a proportional system with a preferential vote and divided Lebanon into 15 constituencies. Referring to the Goal 16 Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions , the paper aims to address the political representation issue in Lebanon, and its connection with the division of constituencies. Furthermore, the paper will demonstrate that the proportional electoral system adopted for the 2018 elections did not allow a mitigation of the repercussions of the divisions on the electoral results, but rather widely amplified them
EVALUATION OF PHENOLIC CONTENT, ANTIRADICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF ORANGE AND CARROT POMACE EXTRACTS
Orange and carrot pomace are considered as food wastes, despite their high content in beneficial health compounds. The comparison of phenolic extracts from orange and carrot pomace, showed higher values for Orange pomace, with a polyphenols concentration (130 mg/L), flavonoids (8.67 mg/L) and tannins (2.5 mg/L). A higher antiradical activity was also noted for orange pomace. However, carrot pomace presented a higher anti-bacterial activity. The beneficial activities of these extracts were owed to their high content in phenolic acids. Our study exhibited that orange and carrot pomace might be utilized as natural preservatives for many industrial applications
LOW DOSE ASPIRIN USE FOR PRIMARY CARDIOVASCULAR PREVENTION AMONG LEBANESE POPULATION
In spite of the controversies regarding low-dose aspirin safety and efficacy, aspirin is widely used by individuals for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. This study assess the appropriateness of low dose aspirin use in a sample of Lebanese population. A cross sectional study was conducted using a community based questionnaire to assess each patient’s risk factors for Myocardial Infarction and ischemic stroke and possible contraindications for aspirin use. WHO risk score was used to calculate the cardiovascular risk of patients and determine the appropriateness of aspirin use for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases accordingly. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS®) version 20. Chi-square test was used to compare between nominal data. P-value was considered significant at values less or equal to 0.05.Results showed that 34% of 505 patients were on aspirin therapy for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Eighty two percent of the sample had low cardiovascular disease risk, while only 4% had very high risk and were eligible for aspirin use for primary prevention according to the WHO guideline. Of the total sample 30.5% were over utilizing aspirin and 3% only were using it appropriately. Moreover, all self and pharmacists’ prescriptions as well as 88% of the physician’s prescriptions were inappropriate. As a conclusion, aspirin is being over-utilized by the Lebanese population for primary prevention of Myocardial Infarction and ischemic stroke. Physicians and pharmacists should collaborate in order to insure proper prescription of aspirin
PROSPECTS OF WALKABILITY IN CITY NEIGHBORHOODSCASE STUDY: THE CITY CENTER OF ALEXANDRIA
Sustainability, livability and quality of life have become widely discussed issues in the literature of urban planning and design. This study primarily aims to investigate the concept of walkability as a part of livability. To draw a wider theoretical framework for this study, it first seeks to define the terms of ‘livability’ and ‘quality of life’. Then, it focuses on the concept of ‘walkability’ as one of the major components of these terms and as a measurable notion in urban design. Thus, this research seeks to identify a set of indicators of walkability in public spaces to be used for the application which can directly impact on the design quality of urban space. Third, this research focuses on Alexandria city center which has been in the process of deterioration due to various current urban strategies. As the case studies, it examines Saad Zaghloul Street at Ramleh Station District by using the set of walkability measures. It investigates the walkability quality of four different zones of the street, and identifies their walkability capacities, problems and potentials. Finally, it suggests the policy and practical solutions on the design of these public spaces that will not only improve the walkability capacity of this street, but also be helpful for the revitalization of the historic city center
