DEVELOPING DESIGN GUIDELINES TOWARDS SAFER PARK: THE CASE OF RAMLET EL BAIDA

    Get PDF
Public urban park is a very important feature in the city, it is responsible for the behavior of the cities and gives an identity of the city besides country to portray it in front of the people. Well maintained park leads to healthy life and well-being. Also, it holds social value and attachment of people to it. Despite wide consensus on the importance of public parks for city dwellers’ social lives as well as their physical and mental health, popular discourses and journalist reports reflect a growing demonetization of public space in many cities around the world. This is because fear is increasingly associated with representations of the ‘public’ in many cities across the world. Threats from diseases spread (e.g., COVID-19), crime, or threats posed by “other” social groups incivility led to violence. This research is conducted in three phases: the first phase focuses on literature review that helps to define the different types of threats as well as their impact. The second phase highlights the factors and characteristics of good public parks and provides tools to evaluate and activate with the physical and social elements. The third one analyses the Ramlet El- Baida case and proposes guidelines

المسؤولية الاجتماعية بين المفهومين التقليدي والحديث

There is a wrong belief that the social responsibility is a modern concept that started in the twentieth century and the fact is that this concept started at the dawn of religions. Prophets preached for good moral, ethics value and deed. Today there is a dedicated date for the social responsibility, which is the 25th of September. Since we currently live in a rapidly changing world, the concept of social responsibility was not an exception and the change applied to it manifested in companies and corporates that started applying the new concept to reflect a beautiful image on its interaction with the environment. Social responsibility is no longer considered voluntary activity as more work is in progress to find a suitable environment to ensure international quality and productivity. Using the power and the knowledge provided by the current knowledge society, the new concept of social responsibility evolved with the evolution of the globalization and the rapid technological advancement. This encouraged corporates and enterprises not only to consider their own interests but also to take into consideration the interests of the consumer, the worker and the civil society as a whole. In the technological and knowledge sector, there is a great opportunity to work on the social responsibility. Teaching people about new technology and its usage is an important aspect to consider and the information technology is one of the most important domains that contributes to societal development. Adopting inter-schooling that combines teaching regular semesters through the internet, interactive tools and academic networks is an illustration of how technology can enrich the teaching experience with special attention to the challenges encountered at the social, intellectual and moral levels. These challenges can destroy national and ethical identity and are illustrated by the cultural, intellectual and ethical invasion of young people that in turn stresses the importance of the family and schooling in this rapidly changing world.

Graphic design has a rich history as a creative practice, which connects different design elements to build effective message. It combines typography and visual elements like Illustrations or photos to create a visual message, graphic design is considered as an important branch in the modern communication technology. Graphic design nowadays has becoming more advanced and moves from the static phase to the dynamic phase which includes unlimited technologies like virtual reality, 3D motion and interactivity, which becomes one of the important factors that affects the successes of the visual communication or the message that has to be sent via the design, where interactive design is the management and meaningful transferring of information through different media as its the intersection point between graphic design, different media and technologies. This interaction in design will affects positively the perception of the design by the target audience especially if it was scientifically studied based on the target audience’s criteria

    Get PDF
Historical preservation helps keep communities beautiful, vibrant and livable, and gives people a stake in their surroundings, for the fact that such historical and valuable places provide a sense of stability and a tangible link with the past (historichawaii.org Feb.2020). Historical places constitute a valuable front for cities with a well-known identity that lasted for centuries. Focusing on developing these places to ensure their sustainability and preserving their history constitutes a mission that has impact not only on the urban environment but also on people using it. Fundamentally, cities bring creative and productive people together helping them to do what they do best: exchange, create and innovate. Culture lies at the heart of urban renewal and innovation.(Culture: urban future: global report on culture for sustainable urban development, Unesco 2016). Al-Muizz Street, an urban space in Cairo, Egypt is the study of this research that aims, first, to assess the current situation of the case study and its physical conditions. Second, to employ new concepts of sustainability in order to revitalize and preserve the cultural heritage of Cairo city, and to propose sustainable design based on the field survey, in order to achieve the best development. Al-Muizz Street constitutes a history that is worth preserving and developing because of its importance in the city life cycle. By being the lifeline of Cairo, restoring life to it, helps ensure an active living and a healthy environment for people

    Get PDF
No-Reference image quality assessment for face images is of high interest since it can be required for biometric systems such as biometric passport applications to increase system performance. This can be achieved by controlling the quality of biometric sample images during enrollment. This paper proposes a novel no-reference image quality assessment method that extracts several image features and uses data mining techniques for detecting the pose variation problem in facial images. Using subsets from three public 2D face databases PUT, ENSIB, and AR, the experimental results recorded a promising accuracy of 97.06% when using the RandomForest Classifier, which outperforms other classifier

PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE CONTAINING WASTE PLASTIC STRAW FIBERS

    Get PDF
Using fibers in concrete applications has become a common practice. This is partly due to improvement in ductility and crack control of concrete. There will be an added advantage if these fibers come from a waste source as it would lead to reduction in environmental pollution and the need for landfill spaces. This paper forms the initial part of a wide range investigation on the use of waste plastic fibers in concrete applications. This study attempts to apply the concept of sustainability and reduces the environmental pollution by producing fibers from waste plastic straws and adding them to plain concrete to improve the tensile strength and ductility. The experimental work was carried to examine the effect of including waste plastic fibers on the properties of concrete. The fiber percentages used were 0%, 0.5%, 1.5% and 3%. Testing included workability, density, compressive and tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and length change. Generally, the addition of waste plastic fibers increased the tensile strength, whereas there was a slight reduction in compressive strength when more plastic fibers were added. The ultrasonic pulse velocity and density show a slight decrease in the presence of fibers

CITY summarizes the urban life’s history, for it is the truest reflection of people’s culture and ntions’ development. Squares have been affected by the grassroots, political and cultural mov- ments that the countries have witnessed; this fact emphasizes the realization of the various aspects relevant to the importance of the relation between the human as-pect and the activities carried out by the people in those urban spaces and the spatial aspect of the urban fabric and that that deterioration of the urban spaces, including the squares, came as a result of a host of reasons that in their es-sence give expression to the weakness in the human aspect of the historical city’s urban fabric. The research provides a study conducted on Martyrs’ Square (Sahat Al Shohadaa) as an accurate case study aiming at determining the effect of the rehabilitation process on this fabric in terms of form, size and intensity, over and above the style, the appearance and the touch. The research, in its findings and recommendations, stresses the necessity to con-sider the nature of interaction between both human aspect (human activities) and the spatial aspect (the urban spaces and public squares) as a crucial threshold towards the development and rehabilitation of ancient region, which enables them to merge with the urban fabric of the modern city, considering that these regions are in a holistic integration with the surrounding
