    Determinants of the Sexual Attitudes, Gender Perceptions, and Quality of Sexual Life of Elderly Women

    AbstractIntroduction With the increase in the older population, sexuality is increasingly accepted as a fundamental element of thegeneral well-being of older adults, which encourages an understanding aimed at increasing their sexual satisfaction andintimacy experiences. The main purpose of this study was to investigate sexual attitudes, gender perceptions, quality ofsexual life, and their determinants in elderly women.Methods The study population consisted of 4401 women living in Gediz district. The population of this cross-sectional studyconsisted of 356 women aged 65 years and older living in Gediz District, Kütahya Province, western Türkiye. The data werecollected between October 2023 and January 2024 using the personal information form, the Sexual Attitudes Scale for theElderly, the Gender Relations Scale, and the Women’s Sexual Quality of Life Questionnaire developed by the researcher.Results Of the participants, 85.7% were in the age group of 65–74 years, 77.2% were married, 41.6% were primary schoolgraduates, 74.2% did not have a regular income, 94.9% had an income less than their expenses, 57.9% lived with their spouses,and 66.6% had a chronic disease. The results of the regression analysis revealed that the variables of age, educational status,marital status, attitudes toward sexuality, and gender relations affected the scores the participants obtained from the SexualQuality of Life–Female questionnaire.Conclusion In this study, it was also determined that the participating women’s sexual attitudes significantly affected thequality of their sexual life and that gender roles and relationships had an effect on their sexual life to a certain extent.Policy Implications The findings of this study underscore the necessity for policymakers to recognize sexual well-being asan integral aspect of healthy aging and to incorporate it into national and regional policy frameworks.</p

    Çocuk hastalarda geniş periapikal lezyonlu dişlerin cerrahi olmayan kök kanal tedavisi: iki olgu raporu

    GİRİŞ:&nbsp;Geniş periapikal lezyonlu dişlerin yönetiminde cerrahi olmayan kök kanal tedavisi (KKT) ve cerrahi yaklaşım ile desteklenen KKT uygulanmaktadır. Endodontideki teknolojik ilerlemeler, tedavi başarısını artırarak cerrahi yaklaşım ihtiyacını azaltmaktadır. Bu iki olgu raporunda, geniş periapikal lezyonu bulunan iki molar dişin cerrahi olmayan KKT ile iyileşmesi sunulmaktadır.&nbsp;OLGU RAPORU:&nbsp;Sistemik olarak sağlıklı, 13 ve 14 yaşlarında iki kız çocuk hasta, sol alt çenede ekstraoral şişlik şikayetiyle kliniğimize başvurmuştur. Klinik ve radyografik muayenede, her iki hastanın 36 numaralı dişinde vitalite testine negatif yanıt, pulpa ile ilişkili çürük, perküsyon hassasiyeti ve geniş periapikal/interradiküler lezyon saptanmıştır. İlk seansta ilgili dişlerin kemomekanik preparasyonu tamamlanmıştır. İrrigasyon %2,5 sodyum hipoklorit&nbsp;(NaOCl), salin ve %17 etilen diamin tetra asetik asit (EDTA) ile pasif ultrasonik aktivasyon kullanılarak yapılmış ve sonrasında kök kanallarına kalsiyum hidroksit yerleştirilmiştir. İki hafta sonra semptomların kaybolduğunun gözlenmesi üzerine aynı irrigasyon prosedürünün ardından kök kanalları biyoseramik esaslı kök kanal patı ve soğuk lateral kondenzasyon tekniği ile doldurulmuştur. Kompozit ile restorasyonlar tamamlanmıştır. Tüm işlemler lastik örtü izolasyonu ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Dişlerin tüm kontrol seanslarında klinik olarak semptomsuz ve fonksiyonda olduğu gözlenmiştir. Radyografik olarak üçüncü ay kontrolünde kemik apozisyonunun başladığı ve birinci yıl kontrolünde lezyonların tamamen iyileştiği saptanmıştır.&nbsp;SONUÇLAR:&nbsp;Çocuklarda geniş periapikal lezyonu bulunan dişler etkili bir tedavi prosedürü takip edildiğinde cerrahi olmayan KKT ile iyileşebilmektedir.&nbsp;ANAHTAR KELİMELER:&nbsp;İrrigasyon, kalsiyum hidroksit, kök kanal tedavisi, muayene, takipINTRODUCTION:&nbsp;Non-surgical root canal therapy (nRCT) and surgical root canal therapy (sRCT) are applied in the management of teeth with large periapical lesions (LPL).&nbsp;Technological advances in endodontics are improved treatment success, reducing the need for surgical intervention. In these two case reports, the healing of two molars teeth with LPL with nRCT is presented.&nbsp;CASE REPORT(S):&nbsp;Two systemically healthy girl patients, aged 13 and 14, presented to our clinic with complaints of extraoral swelling in the lower left jaw. During clinical and radiographic examination, both patients showed a negative response to the vitality test in tooth number 36, along with pulp-related caries, percussion sensitivity, and a&nbsp;large periapical/interradicular lesion. Chemomechanical preparation of the relevant teeth was completed in the first appointment. Irrigation was performed with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), saline and 17% ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) with passive ultrasonic activation, followed by placement of calcium hydroxide into the root canals. Two weeks later, after the symptoms disappeared, the canals were obturated with a bioceramic-based root canal sealer and cold lateral condensation technique, following the same irrigation procedure. The restorations were completed with composite. All procedures were performed with rubber dam isolation. The teeth were observed to be clinically asymptomatic and functional throughout all follow-up sessions. Radiologically, it was determined that bone apposition had begun at the third month and, the lesions had fully healed at the one-year follow-up.&nbsp;CONCLUSION:&nbsp;Teeth with LPL in children can be successfully healed with nRCT when an effective treatment procedure is followed.&nbsp;KEYWORDS:&nbsp;Irrigation, calcium hydroxide, root canal therapy, examination, follow-up</p

    Relationship between the diameters of sphenopalatine foramen and alveolar antral artery and maxillary sinus volume: a retrospective cone beam computed tomography study

    Background: It has been reported that the morphology and volume of the maxillary sinus (MS), which is the largest paranasal sinus, have an impact on the success of surgical procedures that are to be performed in the MS region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sphenopalatine foramen (SPF) and alveolar antral arterial canal (AAAC) diameters and posterior dentition status (PDS) on maxillary sinus volume (MSV). Methods: The study included cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of patients over 20 years of age with no impacted teeth in the MS, and in whom the entire MS margins, AAAC, and SPF were clearly visible. Only images without metal or motion artefacts and with adequate clarity were selected. In this study, a total of 90 patients’ CBCT images, 47 males and 43 females, with a mean age of 47.10 years, were evaluated. AAAC diameter was measured on the coronal section, and SPF diameter was measured on the axial section of CBCT. MSV was measured on axial sections with 3D DOCTOR software. Results: The mean MSV was 14.02 cm3, 14.47 cm3 in dentate patients, and 13.21 cm3 in edentulous patients. The mean MSV was found to be 24.99 cm3 in the female group and 30.84 cm3 in the male group. Statistical analysis revealed that the mean MSV and AAAC diameter were higher in males (p = 0.000). While the mean MSV was higher in the dentate group, this disparity did not demonstrate statistical significance (p = 0.126). A weak negative correlation was identified between MSV and SPF diameter (p = 0.004, r= -214). Conclusions: In the present study, CBCT evaluation revealed that a negative correlation was found between MSV and SPF, and a positive correlation between SPF and AAAC, while no significant relationship was observed between MSV and AAAC. It is recommended that the sample size be increased in future studies to evaluate the possible statistical relationship between MSV and AAAC. The AAAC diameter was larger in patients with edentulous PDS, suggesting increased caution is needed during sinus elevation in such cases. MSV was higher in males, indicating its potential use in sex determination in forensic sciences

    Analysis of relationship between cyberchondria levels and oral health in dental patients

    Background: With the growing use of the internet, the term cyberchondria—which refers to excessive or recurrent online searches for health-related information—is becoming increasingly prevalent. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cyberchondria and oral health by utilizing the Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS) and assessing patients’ oral care status. Methods: This study was conducted using a questionnaire administered to dental patients. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. The first part collected data on patients’ demographic characteristics and oral care status. Oral care status was assessed based on self-reported oral hygiene practices and DMFT indices. The second part involved the administration of the Turkish version of the short-form CSS. After data collection, the responses were analyzed using the Independent Samples t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. Results: The study included 281 dental patients, of whom 54.1% were female and 51.6% were between 18 and 30 years of age. Among the participants, 31% were high school graduates. Half of the patients (50.9%) had high CSS scores, and 60.1% demonstrated a moderate level of oral care. Approximately one-third (33.1%) fell into the low DMFT category. Patients with high CSS scores tended to have better oral care, and this difference was nearly statistically significant (p = 0.054). The highest CSS scores were observed among patients in the low DMFT category (p = 0.313). Furthermore, no significant association was found between DMFT indices and CSS scores (p = 0.57). Conclusions: As digital technologies continue to advance, the frequency of online health information searches is also increasing. In the present study, patients with high CSS scores were found to have low DMFT category and better oral care status; however, these associations were not statistically significant. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that cyberchondria may have an influence on individuals’ oral hygiene behaviors

    Boron’s Role in B16-F10 Melanoma: Cytotoxic, Antioxidant, Apoptotic, and Anti-inflammatory Effects

    Malignant melanoma is a fatal cancer type with a high risk of metastasis. Despite traditional treatments, the survival time of patients is usually 3–9 months. Therefore, alternative treatment strategies are needed. This in vitro study aimed to examine the potential role of boric acid in melanoma treatment by evaluating its cytotoxic, oxidative stress-related, anti-inflammatory, and apoptotic effects on the B16-F10 mouse melanoma cell line. B16-F10 cells were treated with boron at concentrations ranging from 1–100 mM for 24–48 h. Quantitative assays (n = 6 biological replicates per group) showed that boron induced dose-dependent apoptosis and significantly reduced cell viability (IC₅₀ = 16 mM). Annexin-V protein levels increased by 2.1-fold (p < 0.001) at 16 mM, while Bcl-2 protein decreased by 40% (p = 0.037). Conversely, Bcl-2 mRNA expression declined at high doses, suggesting post-transcriptional regulation. Bax and p53 gene expressions increased by 1.35-fold and 7.7-fold, respectively (both p = 0.000). Oxidative stress markers showed a 1.8-fold increase in MDA (p < 0.01) and a 25% increase in GSH (p < 0.05), indicating a redox imbalance with partial compensatory antioxidant response. The results demonstrated that boron treatment induced dose-dependent apoptosis by reducing cell viability, compared to the untreated control cells. In the cells treated with boron, while Bcl-2 gene expression was decreased, the expression of Bax, p53 gene expressions and the level of annexin-V was increased. It was also seen that TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA expression levels and IL-1β and IL-10 levels were decreased in the cells treated with boron. Following boron treatment, an increase in CAT activity, as well as higher levels of GSH and MDA, was observed. These findings suggest that boron may exert anti-melanoma effects in vitro by promoting apoptosis, modulating redox and inflammatory pathways, creating oxidative stress, and decreasing TNF-α and IL-6 levels. However, further in vivo studies are required to validate its therapeutic potential, supporting its evaluation as a promising cancer treatment agent

    Cardioprotective role of phoenixin-14 in isoproterenol-induced myocardial injury: Involvement of AMPK, JAK2/STAT3, and Sema3E pathways

    Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of phoenixin-14 (PNX-14) in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction (MI) in rats, comparing both preventive and therapeutic administration. Materials and methods: Seventy adult male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: Control, PNX-14, ISO, ISO + PNX-14 (PNX-14 treatment after ISO), and PNX-14 + ISO (PNX-14 pretreatment before ISO). MI was induced by subcutaneous ISO (100 mg/kg/day) for two days. PNX-14 (5 nmol/kg, intraperitoneally) was administered once daily for 3 days. Biochemical, molecular, and histopathological analyses were performed to evaluate oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and apoptosis in cardiac tissue. Key findings: PNX-14 treatment significantly reduced the ISO-induced increases in heart/body weight ratio (0.54 ± 0.05), infarct size (47.3 ± 2.51 %), apoptotic index (40.8 ± 2.99 %), and cardiac necrosis markers CK-MB and TnI (p < 0.001). It improved antioxidant defenses by increasing glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS), while reducing total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI). Pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 were lowered, and anti-inflammatory IL-10 increased. PNX-14 also attenuated apoptosis in cardiac tissue by downregulating cytochrome c, APAF-1, caspase-3, and Bax, and upregulating the anti-apoptotic marker Bcl-2. These effects were linked to modulation of Gpr173, AMPK/Nrf2/HO-1, and Sema3E/PlexinD1 pathways, alongside suppression of JAK2/STAT3 and NF-κB signaling. Furthermore, PNX-14 improved hemodynamic stability and histopathologically reduced ISO-induced myocardial damage. Significance: These results demonstrate that PNX-14, particularly when administered after injury, effectively attenuates myocardial damage through multi-pathway regulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. PNX-14 may hold therapeutic potential for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases
