Levantine rock art is a pictorial tradition characterized by the representation of male, asexual and, to a smaller degree, female figures. This article explores female representations of the Lower Aragón, Maestrazgo, and Lower Ebro regions. It focuses on analyzing the relationship between the sites with female motifs and their visual and sound characteristics, using a methodology based on Geographic Information Systems. The results reveal that female figures are present at sites with a diversity of attributes, including those with high visual and excellent sound propagation properties. This suggests a possible link with the social and ritual life associated with the creation of the paintings and, in the sites with the greatest number of figures, with places of aggregation. These data reinforce the hypothesis that, although women are represented in smaller numbers, their presence in sites of symbolic relevance underlines their fundamental role in Levantine prehistoric communities.

Abstract The Monastery of the Holy Sepulchre in Zaragoza is an exquisite example of 14th century regional Gothic architecture. Constructed primarily of brick and almost entirely preserved, it was designed by Friar Martín de Alpartir, treasurer of Archbishop Lope Fernández de Luna. After securing from the archbishop the assignment of the San Nicolás temple –rebuilt shortly before in a similar style– Friar Martín developed a Cistercian-inspired design. The monastery\u27s spectacular chapter house –conceived as a mausoleum– uniquely evokes the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, serving as the central focus of the convent\u27s dedication.

This article addresses the depiction of class, whiteness, dirt and respectability in the short stories “Meanest Woman Ever Left Tennessee”, by Dorothy Allison, and “Boar Taint”, by Bonnie Jo Campbell, from the perspective of waste studies and whiteness studies. Characters in these stories erect discursive barriers between themselves and others, deemed ‘white trash’ — a pervasive stigmatype connected to the working poor experience in the US. By enforcing hierarchies that conflate cleanliness and respectability, these characters seek to prove their adherence to unmarked forms of whiteness while resisting assimilation into the white trash category. The negotiation of (intra-)class divisions, especially between middle and working classes, exposes the malleability of social hierarchies predicated on relationships of waste. In the end, the protagonists’ rejection of white respectability re-signifies their association with waste and leads them to find pride and community in their working-class occupations, without necessarily embracing a purported white trash identity.

The knowledge of common iconography, rituals and religious concepts, very similar, between the Greco-Roman cult of Dionysus-Bacchus and that of Damballah, the voodoo spirit that manifests itself as a snake in both Haiti and Louisiana, has led us to highlight these circumstances in this work. The main objective is to point out the parallels, despite the difficulty that the Dionysian cults are of a mysterious nature and those referring to Damballah and his wife Aida, in the early times, those that provide the most information, were secret. Even so, we have highlighted what has been possible for us and that they share, to a greater or lesser degree, both religions. To the similarities between the mystical basket from which a snake emerges, represented in the cistophori, and the snake that is found in a box and taken out for the ritual, in Haiti, are added the very similar iconography of the snakes represented in the reverses of the cistophori with those of Damballah and Aida in voodoo. The staging of carnal union with the serpent, and the development of orgies with sex and alcohol, are also common elements between the Dionysian-Bacchic and the cult of Damballah.

Luisgé Martín\u27s autobiography El amor del revés (2016) is a paradigmatic example in Spanish literature of how hegemonic discourses affect the construction of identity, as it narrates the long process of self-acceptance as a gay man experienced by its protagonist. To analyse that process, this article focuses on the manifestations of the abject and the monstrous that appear throughout the text and which refer to the author\u27s perception of himself before recognising his sexuality.
