El éxito empresarial de la familia García-Malibran-Viardot. Los casos de Manuel García y Pauline Viardot: The Business Success of the García-Malibran-Viardot Family: The Cases of Manuel García and Pauline Viardot
Full text linkLos García fueron la más importante y exitosa dinastía operística del siglo xix. Sus miembros (Manuel García, María Malibran, Pauline Viardot y Manuel Patricio Rodríguez) no sólo fueron grandes intérpretes, sino que también se dedicaron a la enseñanza, la popularización de la ópera y la composición. Tanto Manuel García como su hija Pauline fueron quienes más desarrollaron su vocación multidisciplinar, viviendo grandes cambios socioeconómicos en el mundo musical. Dichos cambios, unidos a un alto nivel de exigencia formativa y profesional, acabaron situando al cantante operístico muy por delante del compositor o el instrumentista en cuanto a fama y ganancias. Por ello, anteponer el canto a la composición o a la interpretación pianística se convirtió claramente en la mejor opción tanto para el padre como para la hija.

The Garcias were the most important and successful opera dynasty of the 19th century. Its members (Manuel García, María Malibran, Pauline Viardot and Manuel Patricio Rodríguez) were not only great performers, but also dedicated themselves to teaching, the popularization of opera and composition. Both Manuel García and his daughter Pauline, those who most developed a multidisciplinary vocation, experienced great socioeconomic changes in the musical world. These changes, together with a high level of training and professional demand, would end up placing the operatic singer far ahead of the composer or instrumentalist in terms of fame and earnings. Therefore, putting singing before composition or piano performance clearly became the best option for both father and daughter.

Full text linkThe rise of content subjects taught in English as an additional language is one of the most significant phenomena concerning language in contemporary higher education (Macaro et al. 2018). The implementation and teaching of Integrated Content and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE) or English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) entails myriad interrelated factors that pivot on student-centred learning, from learners’ language and subject learning needs to the design of context and language-specific materials. For this reason, training lecturers on how to teach learners in an additional language in Higher Education remains a challenge for the profession. The most recent publications extolling that support courses focus on language and teaching methodology in a much more integrated manner (Dimova et al. 2023; Lasagabaster 2022).
Mª Noelia Ruiz-Madrid and Inmaculada Fortanet-Gómez’s book responds to this call by providing a compilation of the innovative work of different researchers in Europe (Austria, Finland, Italy and Spain) on how universities, researchers and practitioners are facing and developing ICLHE teacher training. These contributions shed new light on a range of issues that play a fundamental role in the design of effective ICLHE professional development. Every chapter furnishing novel data, reflections and implications that serve to inform future ICLHE teacher training programmes. The main objective, to elucidate upon the key factors that afford a learner-centred interactive approach to the design of effective ICLHE teacher training proposals. Resources in the volume will be of interest to academics, researchers, and advanced students of Education and Teacher Training Research and Practice
Un viaducto para Madrid. El proyecto infraestructural de Agustín Aguirre
Full text linkThe Modern Movement in Spain was received in 1928, according to historians. It met with some resistance among the architects of the Madrid group, who were willing to accept the renewal of the style if it was oriented towards solving problems in a natural way. One of the most talented architects of that generation was Agustín Aguirre. He was someone who, throughout his career and due to various circumstances, did not make the most of his gifts as a draughtsman. His most important work, the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, coincided with the years of the Second Spanish Republic, probably when his contact with the avant-garde was most intense, both through his travels abroad and through his reading of publications. In 1932, while the final design for the Faculty was being drawn up, Aguirre took part, together with the engineer Rafael Ceballos, in the competition to rebuild the Madrid viaduct over Segovia Street. It was an unpublished project with a special sensitivity for combining monumentality and practical utility, which this article will attempt to explain from three future perspectives: city-scale building, informed matter and coherence. Road infrastructure as such is a territorial interference, but this concept would be amplified by the ephemeral resonance of the avant-garde and interdisciplinary collaboration.La recepción del Movimiento Moderno en España, cifrada por los historiadores en 1928, encontró una cierta resistencia entre los arquitectos del grupo de Madrid, dispuestos a aceptar los principios renovadores siempre y cuando se dirigieran en resolver problemas de manera natural. Uno de los arquitectos más talentosos de esa generación fue Agustín Aguirre, quien en toda su trayectoria y por diferentes circunstancias, no hizo valer sus cualidades de dibujante. Su obra más importante, la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, coincidió con los años de la Segunda República Española, seguramente cuando el contacto con las vanguardias fue más intenso, tanto por los viajes en el extranjero, como por la consulta de publicaciones. En 1932, mientras se redactaba el proyecto definitivo de la Facultad, Aguirre participó junto al ingeniero Rafael Ceballos en el concurso para reconstruir el viaducto de Madrid sobre la calle Segovia. Se trata de un proyecto inédito con una sensibilidad especial para compaginar monumentalidad y utilidad práctica y que este artículo planteará explicar desde tres prospecciones futuras: edificio-ciudad, materia informada y coherencia. A founding partner of Archi-Tectonics NYC, her firm has distinguished itself through its international focus and the diversity of scales of its work. The firm has built on four continents, and in this sense, Winka is a 21st-century professional, aware that her field of action extends across the globe.
In the academic sphere, she served as chair of the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design [2013–23], where she taught alongside figures such as David Leatherbarrow, Thom Mayne, Ali Rahim, and Marion Weiss, among others. She promoted the creation of an advanced Robotics Lab and currently directs the Advanced Research Institute (ARI). Other renowned architects practiced and taught in Philadelphia, home to the institution, with Louis I. Kahn and Eero Saarinen among the most prominent.
From this vantage point, the conversation turns to the present and future of architecture and its teaching, with a special emphasis on the impact of new technologies.La trayectoria de Winka Dubbeldam resulta, sin duda, impresionante, tanto en su vertiente profesional como académica. Socia fundadora de Archi-Tectonics NYC, su oficina se ha distinguido por su enfoque internacional y por la diversidad de escalas de su trabajo. La firma ha construido en cuatro continentes y, en este sentido, Winka es una profesional del siglo XXI, consciente de que su campo de acción se extiende a todo el planeta.
En el ámbito académico ocupó la presidencia del Departamento de Arquitectura de la Escuela de Diseño de la Universidad de Pensilvania [2013–23], donde ejerció la docencia junto a figuras de la talla de David Leatherbarrow, Thom Mayne, Ali Rahim y Marion Weiss, entre otros. Interferencias: nuevos escenarios para el proyecto de arquitectura
Full text linkThe constant evolution of the different ways of practicing architecture has accelerated in recent years due to a series of concomitant factors. Digitization, which was timidly integrated into studios in the early 1980s and has been sweeping in the last decade, has transformed the way we access information, draw, and even think about projects. The exponential increase in laws and regulations has also contributed to this process, with economic repercussions on construction methods, effective floor space, and resource management. The culture of image and the spirit of permanent immediacy that characterize our time have led to an acceleration of project-related processes, giving rise to the construction of discourses with little theoretical content and favoring the use of graphic fetishes as a common subterfuge for solving fundamental problems.
At ZARCH 24, we have sought to identify the new working conditions linked to architecture and urban planning, the different plural and varied contexts of action, as well as the new responsibilities of both disciplines. We have also reflected on the formats for practicing the profession, the roles associated with it, and the way in which the project should be organized to respond to all the unknowns and challenges identified.La constante evolución de los diferentes modos de ejercicio de la práctica arquitectónica se ha visto acelerada en los últimos años debido a una serie de factores concomitantes. La digitalización, integrada tímidamente a principios de los ochenta en los estudios y arrolladora en la última década, ha producido una transformación en la manera de acceder a la información, de dibujar y aún de pensar los proyectos. El aumento logarítmico de leyes y normativas de aplicación ha contribuido igualmente a este proceso, con repercusiones económicas en los métodos de construcción, la superficie efectiva de uso y la gestión de recursos. La cultura de la imagen y el espíritu de la inmediatez permanente que caracterizan nuestro tiempo ha provocado una aceleración de los procesos ligados al proyecto, dando lugar a la construcción de discursos de bajo contenido teórico, favoreciendo el uso de fetiches gráficos como subterfugio habitual para la resolución de problemas fundamentales.
En ZARCH 24 hemos pretendido identificar las nuevas condiciones de trabajo ligadas a la arquitectura y al urbanismo, los distintos contextos de acción plurales y variados, así como las nuevas responsabilidades de ambas disciplinas. También se ha reflexionado sobre los formatos para ejercer la profesión, los roles asociados a ella y la manera en la que el proyecto se debe de organizar para dar respuesta a todas las incógnitas y desafíos apuntados

Full text linkThe increasingly frequent participation of citizens in the design of public spaces is forcing architects to establish geometric patterns of consensus adaptable to the plurality of demands that arise in these forums. Paradoxically, symmetry as a principle of equivalence and open order, aims to facilitate a space of understanding between the control necessary in these processes and the freedom of action that is demanded. Analyzing both past and present projects of these participatory architectures, we observe the reiteration in these symmetrical organizational schemes as a framework that enables flexibility. This text focuses on one of the latter, the open-air auditorium in Plata and Castañar Park (Villaverde. Madrid), a work that was born from a participatory process where the particularity is that the competition for the drafting of the project had as bases the conclusions of this process. The analysis of the architectural solution adopted based on the results of the dialogue between the different agents allows us to reflect on these productive and operational interferences and the role that the architect must play in achieving flexibility, not only in the work, but also in the project itself. It is the logic of its genesis, the paradox of these times: more is less; more order, more symmetry, less projective rigidity.La participación cada vez más frecuente del ciudadano en el proyecto de los espacios públicos está obligando a los arquitectos a establecer patrones geométricos de consenso adaptables a la pluralidad de las demandas que se dan en estos foros. Paradójicamente, la simetría como principio de equivalencia y de orden abierto, pretende facilitar un espacio de entendimiento, entre el control necesario en estos procesos y la libertad de acción que se demanda. Analizando proyectos tanto pasados como presentes de estas arquitecturas participativas se observa la reiteración en estos esquemas simétricos de organización como marco que posibilita lo flexible. Este texto se centra en uno de estos últimos, el Auditorio al aire libre en el Parque Plata y Castañar en el barrio de Villaverde de Madrid, una obra que nació de un proceso participativo donde la particularidad radicaba en que el concurso para la redacción del proyecto tenía como bases las conclusiones de este proceso. El análisis de la solución arquitectónica adoptada a partir de los resultados del diálogo entre los distintos agentes permite reflexionar sobre estas interferencias productivas y operativas y el papel que debe tener el arquitecto en la consecución de lo flexible, no solo en la obra, sino también en el propio proyecto. Es la lógica de su génesis, la paradoja de estos tiempos: más es menos; más orden, más simetría, menos rigidez proyectual.
Francisco Nieva y Carlos Edmundo de Ory: La proyección creativa de una amistad (1948-2005)
No full textFrom the rich archive of Carlos Edmundo de Ory we delve into his friendship with Francisco Nieva. They both met in 1948 in Madrid, when Nieva was a painter. Between 1948 and 1950 they lived a very intense friendship and even lived under the same roof, as Ory stayed at Pilar Nieva\u27s house. Several poems by Ory and drawings by Nieva date from those years that portray their relationship, their evenings with Emilia Palomo, Carlos\u27 girlfriend at the time, and the erotic fantasies, confidences, pranks and ceremonies shared by two imaginative and artistically ambitious young people who considered themselves "little brothers in the milk of Satan." The last literary fruit of that relationship could be Nieva\u27s Lady Tártara (released in 1980), a farce and calamity feature written in 1970 whose protagonist Ary, according to an unpublished text by Nieva, was inspired by Ory, although Nieva never confessed this to his old friend.A partir del rico archivo de Carlos Edmundo de Ory nos adentramos en su amistad con Francisco Nieva. Ambos se conocieron en 1948 en Madrid, cuando Nieva era pintor. Entre 1948 y 1950 vivieron una amistad intensísima e incluso convivieron bajo el mismo techo, pues Ory se hospedó en casa de Pilar Nieva. De aquellos años datan varios poemas de Ory y dibujos de Nieva que retratan su relación, sus veladas junto a Emilia Palomo, novia de Carlos entonces, y las fantasías eróticas, confidencias, travesuras y ceremonias compartidas por dos jóvenes imaginativos y artísticamente ambiciosos que se consideraban «hermanitos de la leche de Satán». El último fruto literario de aquella relación podría ser La señora Tártara de Nieva (estrenada en 1980), función de farsa y calamidad escrita en 1970 cuyo protagonista Ary, según un texto inédito de Nieva, se inspiró en Ory, aunque esto Nieva nunca se lo confesó al viejo amigo
