The Interaction between Self-Esteem, Perceived Gender Discrimination and Employment Motivation: A Log-Linear Analysis

    No full text
This study analyzes the relationships between self-esteem, perceived gender discrimination, and employment motivation. Results show that individuals not perceiving gender discrimination are 3.66 times more prevalent than those who do. Individuals who see the purpose of employment as a way to improve themselves are 1.8 times more motivated than those who want to contribute meaningfully to society. Self-improvement is a stronger motivator than contributing to society, and income-focused individuals show 2.8 times higher motivation. Those with low self-esteem aspiring to contribute to society are 2.6 times more likely to be motivated than those focusing on self-improvement. Achieving gender equality and preventing discrimination can enhance personal development and societal contributions, leading to increased individual success and social welfare. The motivations of self-development and usefulness to society make the strongest contribution to an individual’s self-esteem. These motives are related to inner satisfaction and social recognition. © 2024 Durukan et al

    No full text
In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated with bioactive molecules were synthesized via Vitex agnus-castus L. (VAC) seed extract (VAC/AgNPs). The synthesized VAC/AgNPs were characterized by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) ultraviolet-visible region spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The hydrodynamic size and surface charge analysis of the particles were measured with a Zeta sizer. The results of UV-Vis and Zeta analysis revealed that AgNPs were synthesized, the size distribution was nanoscale, and the solution was stable. The effects of the synthesized VAC/AgNPs and aqueous extract of VAC seeds on honeybees were investigated by means of lifespan test and histopathological analysis. It was determined that both VAC seed extract and VAC/AgNPs were non-toxic to honeybees at certain doses, positively affected their life span and contributed to their longevity in the life span test. Furthermore, no adverse effects were detected in terms of intestinal health in histopathological examinations. Therefore, VAC/AgNPs are considered to be a promising bioactive agent for honeybees

The aim of this study is to determine whether myocardial damage and heart failure occur in dogs with parvoviral enteritis, using serum sialic acid and heart biomarkers, and to determine the relationship between sialic acid level and CRP, liver-kidney and cardiac biomarkers, and the changes in the enteritis form of parvoviral infection in dogs. The animal material of the study consisted of 25 patients and 10 healty dogs of both genders, aged 0-4 months, brought to Kırıkkale University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Research and Application Hospital Small Animal Clinic for treatment with complaints of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.WBC, NEU, LYM, RBC, HGB, HCT, MCH, MCV, MCHC, PLT values and serum TP, albumin, globulin, urea, creatinine, CRP, NT-ProBNP, cTn-1 levels in blood taken from dogs and whole blood, ALP, ALT, AST, LDH, CK-MB activities were determined.Compared to healthy dogs, sick dogs had WBC (P0.05), MCV (P>0.05) and MCHC (P>0.05) values. A decrease was detected in TP (P0.05), and sialic acid (P0.05) and creatinine (P>0.05) values were observed. As a result in this study it was determined that the occurrence of neutropenia, leukopenia and lymphopenia in dogs with parvoviral enteritis could be used as a clinical prognostic indicator. Increase in serum ALT, ALP, AST, CK-MB, LDH activities, NT-ProBNP, cTn-1, CRP values were accepted as diagnostic indicators for liver and myocardium. It was revealed that significant increases in the levels of cardiac biomarkers LDH, CK-MB and AST activities, NT-ProBNP, cTn-1 and sialic acid may be indicators of myocardial damage and heart failure in dogs with parvoviral enteritis. It was concluded that the data obtained could be useful in the prognosis and diagnosis of parvoviral enteritis in dogs in veterinary medicine. Keywords :C-Reactive Protein, hematology, cardiac markers, NT-ProBNP, parvoviral enteritis, serum biochemistry, sialic aci

Investigation of Ivermectin Susceptibility in Kangal and Akbaş Dogs via MDR1 Gene Mutation

    No full text
This research aimed to investigate the sensitivity to the drug (ivermectin) in Kangal and Akbaş breed dogs, which are dog breeds native to Turkey, via the MDR1 gene mutation. For the research, blood, hair and intraoral swap samples were taken from 30 Kangal and 20 Akbaş breed dogs (male-female mixed, adult) with ethical permission and approval forms. Kangal dog samples were taken from the dogs bred in the farms in Sivas center and Kangal village, and Akbaş dog samples were taken from the dogs bred in the farms in the Sivrihisar center, Ankara and Eskişehir regions. The samples taken were evaluated based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from the wool and subsequent two-way dideoxy chain termination reaction in the presence of 4 base farm deletions (c.296-299delAGAT) in the 4th exon of the ABCB1 gene that encodes the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) drug transporter protein. According to the obtained DNA sequence results, the deletion of “AGAT” was not determined in any of the individuals screened. The results of this study, which is preliminary research, showed that Kangal and Akbaş breed dogs are safe in terms of sensitivity to drugs that are set to be absorbed and excreted by the P-gp pump, especially ivermectin. However, it would be useful to repeat the analysis of both breeds with more examples

Export Potential Index for Textile Industry (EPIT) model proposal with structural equation modelling and application

    No full text
PurposeThe aim of this study is to develop a new multidimensional index to measure export potential of textile firms by using firm-level data.Design/methodology/approachAfter a conceptual model, a structural equation model is developed with five dimensions and 27 observed variables based on resource-based view theory. The measurement model is solved by Linear Structural Relations (LISREL) with maximum likelihood algorithm by using data collected from 454 textile firms in T & uuml;rkiye.FindingsIn this study, a new multidimensional index that measures export potential of textile firms is developed. With the proposed model, the export potential of textile firms can be calculated numerically with the five dimensions: Resources, Dynamism, Knowledge, Innovation and Sustainability. The comparison of the output of the proposed model with the control variable, firm's actual export values, shows a significantly high success ratio of 90.76%.Research limitations/implicationsThe model is applicable for textile firms at different export levels, regions and sub-sectors. The Export Potential Index for Textile Industry model is verified by using Turkish textile industry data. The robustness of the model may be increased by verifying the model by using some other countries data. This model can be implemented to other industrial sectors with some modification of the dimensions and variables.Practical implicationsThe proposed model will contribute to the firms by calculating their export potential in five dimensions with their own variables numerically. The model will help firms to develop strategies to increase their export potential and to the governmental and industrial organizations to develop incentives policies.Originality/valueThis paper fills the gap in the literature by proposing a multidimensional index that determines a firm's export potential numerically by using firm-level data

Evaluation of Colostral Passive Immune Transfer Success in Turkish Kangal Shepherd Dogs

    No full text
The aim of this study was to investigate the passive immune transfer process and its effects in Turkish Kangal shepherd dogs. The material of the study consisted of 15 dams and their 138 offspring in the region of Central Anatolia, Turkiye. Blood samples were collected from the surviving puppies at 48 +/- 4 h postpartum and IgG levels were measured using the ELISA method. Before the blood samples were collected, 34 of the puppies (26.64%) died, 56 of the 104 puppies (40.58%) whose blood samples were collected and IgG analyses were done died prior to weaning, and 48 (34.78%) survived until weaning. All of the analyzed blood samples had IgG levels above 230 mg/dL and there was no passive transfer failure. The average blood IgG level of the puppies was 664.86 mg/dL. The effects of litter size and birth season on passive transfer success were statistically significant (P0.05). There was no correlation between the average blood IgG levels of the puppies and group mortality rates (r =-0.44). In conclusion, while the rate of passive transfer success for Turkish Kangal shepherd dogs was found to be high compared to other breeds, the high rate of mortality among the puppies suggested that dams and their litters should be cared for more carefully in the neonatal period.Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Kirikkale University BAP [2020/087]This work was supported by the Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Kirikkale University BAP (Project Number 2020/087)

The effect of pre-operative and operative lidocaine use on postoperative pain in ovariohysterectomy operation in cats

    No full text
Ağrı ölçeği tüm ölçüm zamanlarında kontrol grubunda deney grubuna göre daha yüksekti ve farklılığın istatistiksel yönden anlamlı düzeyde olduğu belirlendi (P < 0.05).The aim of this study is to reduce postoperative pain after ovariohysterectomy (OHE) operation using preoperative and operative lidocaine hydrochloride in animals. It was believed that the pain thresholds of animals were high and that pain was not felt while under anesthesia during the operation. It is now accepted all over the world that this idea is wrong, it is known that the application of analgesic drugs should be started in the preoperative period. The study was carried out on 40 female cats brought with the request of ovariohysterectomy. Cats were randomly divided into two groups as control group (n=20) and experimental group (n=20). Intraperitoneal lidocaine were applied to the experimental group before and during the operation and ovariohysterectomy operations were performed. In the control group, OHE operations were performed under similar environmental conditions without lidocaine application. Blood samples were taken preoperatively and at the postoperative 24th hour. In the preoperative period, vital functions including heart rate, respiratory rate and body temperature were recorded at the 6th, 12th, 24th, 72nd and 120th hours postoperatively. Pain scales of cats were evaluated at 6, 12, 24, 72 and 120 hours postoperatively. While significant decreases were observed in heart rate and respiratory rates in all groups due to anesthesia, it was thought that these findings could not be associated with pain assessment. Changes in body temperatures that could be associated with anesthesia and possibly the analgesic substance were detected. The pain scale was higher in the control group than in the experimental group at all measurement times, and the differences were determined to be statistically significant (P < 0.05)

The protective effects of selenium and boron on cyclophosphamide-induced hepatic oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in rats

    No full text
Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an alkylating anticancer drug with broad clinical application that is highly effective in the treatment of cancer and non-malignant diseases. However, the main limiting effect of CP is multi-organ toxicity due to damage to normal tissues. The aim of this study is to compare the hepatoprotective potential of selenium (Se) and boron (B) in CP-induced liver injury in experimental rats. The rats were randomly divided into six equal groups: Control (saline), 200 mg/kg CP (administered once on the fourth day of the experiment), 1.5 mg/kg Se (administered once/time daily for 6 days), 20 mg/kg B (administered once/time daily for 6 days), Se + CP and B + CP administered intraperitoneally (i.p.). Administration of CP leads to an increase in the levels of apoptotic markers (Bax, caspase-3), the apoptotic signaling pathway (Nrf2), oxidative stress indicators (TOS, OSI), lipid peroxidation markers (MPO, MDA), inflammation levels (NF-kB, TNF-?, IL-1?, IL -6), liver function markers (ALT, AST, ALP), while apoptosis markers (Bcl-2), apoptosis pathway (Keap-1), oxidative stress indicator (TAS), inflammation (IL -10) and intracellular antioxidant defense system (SOD, CAT, GPx and GSH) decreased. In addition, degeneration of hepatocytes and congestion in the central veins were observed. In contrast, in the groups administered Se and B with CP, the changes that occurred were reversed. However, it was found that Se protects the liver slightly better against CP damage than B. The protective effect of Se and B against the toxic effects of CP on the antioxidant markers SOD, CAT and GPx1 was also investigated in silico. The in silico results were consistent with the in vivo results for SOD and CAT, but not for GPx1. © 2024Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi, ESOGU; Eskişehir Osmangazi University Scientific Research Projects Unit, (2020-3153
