Garden and Gardener of Aikawa in Sado of the Edo Period
application/pdfAikawa prospered from the 17th century by mining of gold and silver. At first the garden of the Sado magistrateʼs office was built, and then the gardens of the licensed pleasure quarter, the temple, and the private house were made.
We can get to know about the gardeners in Aikawa of the Edo period from 〝The History of Aikawa of Sado(佐渡相川志)"written in 1753. Various people, such as a masterless samurai, a mountain priest, a local government official, and an exile, made the gardens.
〝The History of Sado(佐渡志)"written in 1816, describes trees and flowers planted in the garden in Sado. Although many plants grew wild in Sado, there were also cultivated species carried from outside the island. Probably these plants were sed for the gardens in Aikawa.departmental bulletin pape
