    My Kitsch Theory - Owari-Nagoya

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe souvenirs and folk art displayed in the parlor hidden in my house were so coquettish and lovely that they are still displayed with great care. One day when I invited a friend over, she said to me, “This place is so kitschy. This was the beginning of my journey in search of kitsch, and I have continued to travel to various destinations to take pictures of kitsch.departmental bulletin pape

    Whale’s spout beyond the bank

    No full text
application/pdfThis artwork is a wood sculpture made of mountain alder. This wood was growing on the university campus. The starting point for this artwork was the custom of whale memorial services. The encounter with this wood and the coincidence of knowing about the whale memorial service at the same time triggered the creation of this artwork. I began to think about wood and sculpture from the Japanese whaling culture. As I continued to think about the artwork, it seemed to me that the whalers kept a certain “distance” from whales while they were fishing. This distance might be maintained in the creation of wood sculptures.departmental bulletin pape

Expression by the old lenses 2024 : Color adjustment of radioactive lenses

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn the research in FY2023, we summarized the current status of lenses manufactured by mixing radioactive materials, which were widely used for high-performance optical lenses in the 1970s, by observing the actual radiation levels and the discoloration of the glass. Many of the so-called radioactive optical lenses have turned violently yellowish brown about 50 to 60 years after manufacture, and there is no doubt that they were failures in terms of the choice of materials used, including the presence of radiation that continues to be emitted for a long period of time, albeit in minute quantities. On the other hand, the recent spread of mirrorless single-lens digital cameras has made it easier to use various optical lenses manufactured in the past with today’s cameras via various adapters, which was once difficult. While this is not a method of use that allows camera and lens manufacturers to achieve the highest performance values at the time of design and manufacture, it does create new possibilities in terms of unleashing the creativity of the user. This study summarizes an experiment that tested whether it is possible to intentionally change the color tone of a radioactive lens that has been discolored.departmental bulletin pape

The Effect of Speech Intervals on Oxyhemoglobin Concentration Measured by fNIRS

    Get PDF
application/pdfPrevious studies have shown that brain activity is greater during free speech compared to reading or counting tasks. This is interpreted that brain activity increases with the complexity of the speechproduction task. However, while reading and counting tasks are steady, free speech varies in timing, which might affect brain activity. In this study, we examined the effect of speech intervals on the brain activity measured by functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. In the experiment, meaningless characters were presented at either fixed or random intervals, and participants were tasked with verbalizing the presented characters. Results indicated that the left inferior frontal gyrus was activated under both conditions. However, no significant effects of speech interval on brain activity were found. This suggests that the increased brain activity under free speech condition is not due to differences in speech timing between conditions, but rather due to the inherent complexity of free speech task.departmental bulletin pape

Research on estimating the total amount of widearea snowfall in snowy countries using UAV photogrammetry

    Get PDF
application/pdfHigh-precision 3D data generated from photographs is applied not only to static solid objects, but also to fluid situations and environments with temporal aspects that change over time. We considered the possibility of analytical calculations. There are precedents for similar attempts in aerial laser surveying using large-scale systems, but this research aims to construct a more realistic three-dimensional model using the information and visual detail of photographs, and to accurately grasp snow volume. I aimed for it. We have been known the ground-mounted measuring devices (snow scales, snow sensors, etc.) are often installed in areas with conventional snowfall, and these devices automatically and continuously measure snow thickness, density, snow-water ratio, etc. And you can measure and obtain data in real time. The acquired data has been utilized as measurement data for more than half a century as a standard in the field of snow and ice, using graphs of snow information called ``whale maps.’’in Japan. The points and their graphs, which have been in the form of measurement points or snow heights at arbitrary points, have been developed from points to areas, allowing a new sense of understanding the snow cover and environmental conditions of the entire region. In this study, I decided to explore the possibility of recognition.departmental bulletin pape

Consideration on landscape transformation of native tea field in modern times

    Get PDF
application/pdfConcerning the consciousness of the farmers of native tea production toward cultivation, it is not in accordance with the times, but in order to preserve the native tea for future generations, it is thought that it is necessary to increase the commercial value and appeal the rarity of the tea, and the preservation of the native tea garden is thought to be difficult. The situation was suggested that the native tea plantations with steep slopes that had been cultivated in the past were left behind, there were farmers who shipped the remaining native tea plants. In the interview survey, it was shown that the production of tea has been decreasing due to the lack of labor. In addition, the establishment of new tea experiment stations and research institutes in Kagoshima Prefecture and Yame City led to an outflow of human resources. While other production areas were rapidly modernizing their varieties and facilities, there was also the problem of aging employees and successors. In order to clarify the landscape structure of the remaining traditional tea plantations in Kasahara Village, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, this study investigated the land use, elevation, and slope of tea plantations owned by Mr.A and Mr.F. The results showed that the land use, elevation, and slope of tea plantations in Kasahara Village were similar to those in other areas of Fukuoka Prefecture.departmental bulletin pape

Kamabocollection :A Record of the Creation Process and A Consideration on Art and Research

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe authors conducted a research project titled “Kamabocollection” at the 9th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. They investigated 31 kamaboko-shaped buildings in Nakajo, Tokamachi, which are unique to the heavy snowfall region of Niigata Prefecture, and compiled their findings into a video presentation, inviting viewers to appreciate these charming structures scattered throughout the area. This paper will also discuss the nature of art and what it means to approach art from an academic research perspective through this project.departmental bulletin pape

Monograms in Early Medieval Europe: A Survey of the Initial Pages of Illuminated Manuscripts

    Get PDF
application/pdfSince antiquity, monograms—symbols formed by combining several letters—have appeared on coins and other items in Europe. Their use persisted through the Roman Empire and became widespread in Western Europe and the Byzantine world during the Middle Ages. Monograms were adopted by the monarchs and clergy as political symbols of authority. They also served invocative purposes, incorporating the name of God and prayer texts. In illuminated manuscripts, decorated letters evolved into intricately designed monograms, particularly during the Carolingian and Ottonian periods. This study provides an overview of monogram culture in Europe from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages and explores their role in the use of illuminated manuscripts.departmental bulletin pape

Study on the Glass-related professions in the mid- Meiji period

    Get PDF
application/pdfThis article examines the “occupations” related to “glass” from newspaper articles in the Meiji period. The following points become clear. 1) In the mid-Meiji period, a tender was advertised for “Mado Garasu Kirikomi Koji”. It can be assumed that the work was carried out by “Hari-syoku”. 2) It can be assumed that during the Meiji period, a system was in place in which multiple “Garasu no Koware Gai” collected waste glass in the city, which was then purchased by “Yabure Garasu no Nakagai”.departmental bulletin pape
