Kindertransport - rescue from the death camps and the search for identity
Following Jacques Austerlitz, the hero from the novel of the same name, through the Narrator, we embark on a journey of discovery, identity and the phenomenon of the Kindertransport that took place over two years when over 10,000, mostly Jewish, children were rescued from the territories occupied by Germany. The parents of these children were already placed in concentration camps or killed. The children were transferred to Great Britain and placed with new, substitute families. It was intended for them to be reunited with their old families after the war, but at that moment, the extent was not yet known of the disaster and the Holocaust that would have happened to members of the Jewish community. Only years later would many children begin to search for their lost families and reveal their stories and traumas caused by leaving their loved ones at an early age
Služenje prošlosti: porodične priče Jasminke Domaš kao primer postmemorijskih narativa
The paper analyses a section of the Jewish triptych edited by Jasminka Domaš and comprising "Obitelj-Mishpaha", "Glasovi, sjećanja, život: Prilog istraživanju povijesti židovskih obitelji" and "Ako tebe zaboravim: Prilog istraživanju povijesti židovskih obitelji". The focus is on the most recent volume, "Ako tebe zaboravim" (2018), which presents family accounts from members of the second and third generation of Holocaust survivors, as well as from those who survived the Holocaust as children in Croatia. The paper begins by outlining the defining characteristics of these narratives and the themes recurring throughout the collected stories. These elements allow Croatian narratives to be placed within a transnational model of postmemory storytelling. The article also highlights motifs that demonstrate both the originality of the accounts gathered by Domaš and their dependence on local historical and social contexts. In the final section, the paper provides a detailed analysis of two accounts that stand out from the rest of the volume.
The Voice of B’nai B’rith "Gavro Schwartz": Magazine of Jewish Culture, Civilization and History, no. 39, November 2025
Tu je također i san jednog đakovačkog rabina – kao i snovi o Eretz Izraelu...The thirty-nine issue of “Glasnik” brings texts that deal with dreams - there is “The Dream of Love and Death” by Filip David, but also the musical dreams of Jewish composers, many of whom ended up in exile during Nazism and then achieved successful careers in incredibly unfavourable historical circumstances; there are also the dreams of Jewish chess players, who view the world in a completely different way, achieving success in this seemingly simple but actually very complex game! There is also the dream of a rabbi from Đakovo – as well as dreams about Eretz Israel...Tema broja: Milenijski san (the theme of this issue: Milenial dream).Časopis "Glasnik B'nai B'rith", Hrvatska dostupan je na Internet stranici [https://www.bnaibrith.hr]The magazine "The Voice of B’nai B’rith," Croatia, is available on the website [https://www.bnaibrith.hr
A new language of humanism - beyond the limits of speech?
The Holocaust, as a radical rupture in the historical, ethical, and linguistic continuum, calls into question
not only the power of human speech but also the very viability of humanism. In a world where language
functioned not only as a silent witness but also as an accomplice, and even a precondition, of an atrocity, the question arises: is it possible to articulate a discourse that escapes ideological instrumentalization? And if so, what kind of language would be required to make such a discourse possible? This work explores the limits and potential of language after Auschwitz, examining the tension between testimony and silence and inexplicability and yearning for meaning. Drawing on philosophical and theoretical approaches to the Holocaust, it considers whether a new form of humanism might emerge from this linguistic and moral crisis, one no longer grounded in the affirmation of the Western subject but in the recognition of vulnerability, ethical responsibility, and the irreducibility of the Other. Through engagement with thinkers such as Adorno, Arendt, Lyotard, Foucault, Heidegger, and Sartre, the analysis interrogates the historical complicity of discourse, the structure of trauma, and the epistemological gaps that persist in Holocaust representation. Postmodern thought is examined both for its critical insight and its risks, particularly regarding the stability of meaning and the potential for ethical relativism. Ultimately, the possibility of a new humanism with its language depends on our willingness to question the very foundations of thought and speech
Traces of the Holocaust in Danilo Kiš’s novel “Garden, ashes”
The goal of this paper is to highlight the traces of the Holocaust which subtly appear in the novel "Garden, Ashes" by Danilo Kis and analyze the form and function of their appearance. The paper will demonstrate how Kiš, subtly hinting at themes of Nazism and the Holocaust through traces in his novel, actually writes about the very essence of what the Holocaust, genocide, death and disappearance are, and opens up a narratological
space for expressing the trauma all these things cause. This space is opening through discursive shapes and forms which this author uses to, without naming things, allow the very essence of disappearance and suffering to speak through the silence
The position of Jews in Serbia and Romania in 1867. according to British diplomatic sources
This paper compares the life circumstances of the Jewish community in Romania and Serbia. Despite the disproportionate size of the Jewish community, the authors follow the connection of these principalities in terms of solving the Jewish question, that is, the intensive activities of British diplomacy to mediate in solving this issue. The authors see the basis for the comparison in the connection between the relations of British diplomats towards Serbia and Romania, that is, the reduction of pressure on the Serbian government and Prince Mihailo after the persecution of Jews intensified in Romania in the summer of 1867. The authors pay special attention to the socio-political context since both countries were going through a turbulent period in the period 1866-1867: in Bucharest, in 1866, a constitution was passed that had discriminatory provisions against Jews, while in Serbia, laws against Jews that restricted their economic activities were still valid. In Serbia, in early 1867, cities were handed over to the Serbian authorities. Judging by the British sources from The National Archives (TNA) of the United Kingdom used as the basis of this work, the events that took place in Serbia and Romania were important to the Foreign Office of Great Britain, as well as to the most important Jewish organizations and individuals. With joint forces, they tried to alleviate the discriminatory position of Jews in Serbia and Romania, which is the focus of this work
Jews in space
As part of the “Zoom Shabbat” program, organised by the Jewish Community of Belgrade and technically supported by Raka-Rahamin Levi, the guest speaker on May 23, 2025, was Raka Levi himself - the host and editor of the Zoom series. This presentation, available here in PDF format only, focused on Jewish individuals connected to space exploration. It highlighted Jewish astronauts from Russia, the United States, and Israel, as well as lesser-known figures whose work touched on the cosmos - including science fiction writers, authors of space-themed books, filmmakers, and even a 14th-century Jewish astronomer-astrologer. The presentation offered a unique blend of biographical, scientific, and cultural insights into the Jewish presence in the history and imagination of space.Predavanje održano 23. maja 2025. godine preko Zoom platforme (Zoom Šabat) sa početkom u 19.30 časova. The lecture was held on May 23, 2025, via the Zoom platform (Zoom Shabbat) starting at 7:30 p.m
MIRA: dugotrajna nepoznanica iz Šoaha iznenada odgonetnuta!
This is the story of Mira, the girl at the famous, iconic, miraculously preserved photograph, in fact, a series of three photographs taken one after the other from the different angles. The camera faithfully recorded the figure of this innocent, gentle young girl, her lovely fragility. But throughout the following decades the question, which I also often asked myself, remained unanswered: what happened to that girl? Is at least her name known to anyone? It has been one of the unsolved topics until now. The „sign” on her clothes itself obviously belongs to the area and time of the Nazi-collaborating Ustasha regime of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH, April 1941-May 1945). I recently discovered the end, and a happy one, to a miraculous and previously unknown story about the girl with the „Jewish sign” on her clothes. Doživjela sam veliku profesionalnu i ljudsku nagradu i čast: otkrila sam kraj, i to sretan kraj jedne čudesne i dosad nepoznate priče.Link na tekst na hrvatskom jeziku [https://www.jevrejskadigitalnabiblioteka.rs/handle/123456789/3269
The Holocaust on the territory of today's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Dr Eli Tauber's lecture "The Holocaust on the territory of today's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina" is the second lecture of the third course entitled "The Holocaust in Yugoslavia, with a focus on the territory of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia", which is being realised within the project "Holocaust in the countries of the former Yugoslavia". This project is the first of its kind in the region and aims to deepen understanding of the Holocaust within the former Yugoslavia, encourage critical thinking, promote tolerance and empathy, and emphasise the ongoing importance of education about the Holocaust in the area. The project includes four online courses, each with three lectures, and one six-day live seminar, organised after the end of the fourth course in Belgrade and Skopje. All courses, as well as the seminar, address the topic of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism in the former Yugoslav territory. Each of the four online courses provides valuable general knowledge from the specified thematic frameworks, with a particular focus on certain parts of the region and their experiences of the Holocaust.
