application/pdfThis study targeted a model group of the parents of children in Hikikomori state (the individual) recruited in A prefecture. The purpose is to practice a family support program aiming to enable such parents to respond to the individual in an understanding manner in order to explore the effectiveness of the program and create a rubric that will serve as the evaluation criteria. Thirteen parents (six males and seven females) participated in the family classes, which were conducted six times. The results of the rubric evaluation established the effectiveness of the program with likely influences of the following three factors. (1) The focus on mutual exchange and narration of experiences through dialogue between members, which is a central element of the self-help group, was effective. (2) The use of the rubric allowed elaborating on the complex qualitative changes in each participant, further enhancing the inter-subjectivity of evaluators and avoiding the risk of erroneous judgments. (3) One factor that may not lead to an understanding response of parents is that they have difficulty communicating with their children. journal articl

application/pdfThis study examined the effectiveness of using documentation to share visualized experiential team activities with parents and the significance of this method in early childhood education and care practice. Data from an open-ended survey of parents were analyzed using KH Coder, and different categories were extracted; these included“ promotion of communication and rediscovery of Toyooka Village,”“ interest in the richness of nature,”“ interest in the school’s own experience,”“ recognition of community resources,”“ meaningful experiences,” and“ understanding life and childcare content.” The study results revealed that documenting this practice contributed to parental support for childcare; moreover, the use of documentation in early childhood education and care is an important element in the sharing of visual experiences among caregivers and between caregivers and parents. The study results also suggested that this practice promoted the development of nursery teachers in the region and led to greater openness between teachers and parents. Future research should consider regional characteristics and requirements for quality improvement through mutual early childhood education and care practices. journal articl

journal articl

application/pdfPoor sleep is associated with lifestyle, however, few studies have addressed the association between sleep quality and the neighborhood environment. This study aimed to investigate the associations between living environment factors and sleep quality in older people. Participants were community-dwelling people aged ≥65 years who articipated in the 2010 Japanese Gerontological Evaluation Study. The data of 16,650 people (8102 men, 8548 women) were analyzed. Sleep quality (good or poor) was evaluated using a self-administered questionnaire. Multilevel Poisson regression analysis stratified by depressive status (measured by the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 [GDS]) was conducted with sleep quality as the dependent variable and social and physical environmental factors as explanatory variables. The 12,469 non-depressive respondents and 4181 depressive respondents were evaluated. The regression analysis indicated that non-depressive participants slept better if they lived in environments with few hills or steps (prevalence ratio [PR] = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.56–0.9) and with places where they felt free to drop in (PR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.26–0.98). For depressive participants, these associations were not evident. Living alone, poor self-rated health, low income, and unemployment were associated with poor sleep quality. In addition to support with these individual factors, improving environmental factors at the neighborhood level may improve the sleep quality of community-dwelling older adults.journal articl
