Feminist Epistemology: The Foundation of Feminist Research and its Distinction from Traditional Research

    Get PDF
There are many questions surrounding feminist research. The most common question is: "What makes feminist research distinctive from traditional research within the Social Sciences?" In trying to answer this question, we need to examine feminist epistemology and the intertwining nature of epistemology, methodology (theory and analysis of how research should proceed), and methods (techniques for gathering data) utilized by feminist researchers. Feminist epistemology in contrast to traditional epistemologies is the foundation on which feminist methodology is built. In turn, the research that develops from this methodology differs greatly from research that develops from traditional methodology and epistemology. Therefore, I argue that one must have a general understanding of feminist epistemology and methodology before one can understand what makes this type of research unique. Such a foundation will assist us in our exploration of the realm of feminist research, while illuminating the differences between feminist and traditional research

Struggling for Authentic Human Synergy and a Robust Democratic Culture: The Wellspring Community for Women in Educational Leadership

    Get PDF
In this paper we will introduce a community of women educational leaders, their struggles for personal and professional accountability, and their inquiry toward the development of leadership wisdom in a democratic culture. Such leadership wisdom is not the norm in today\u27s educational organizations. Influenced by the work of researchers, educational leaders, and professors of educational administration, traditional leadership has been based on hierarchical thinking and prescriptive skills that have promoted the status quo (Davies & Foster, 1994; Maxcy, 1994). This paper tells the story of a group of women educational leaders who are supporting each other as they challenge tradition and explore the application of democratic leadership in educational settings. Their story is a result of the analysis of data collected over the first three years of the Wellspring Community\u27s existence

Legitimated Violence in Schools: The Power Behind the Paddle

Corporal punishment is a form of discipline in which an adult deliberately inflicts pain on children to correct misbehavior (Paintal, 1999). Since the colonial period, corporal punishment has been accepted and practiced in American schools. Although use has steadily declined since the 1970s, the Center for Effective Discipline (2000) estimates that public school officials administer corporal punishment to more than two thousand American schoolchildren every day. This paper examines one principal\u27s use of corporal punishment. The analysis unmasks four forces that legitimate corporal punishment: tradition, law, religion, and hegemonic masculinity. The conclusion identifies alternatives for just and humane treatment of schoolchildren

Hispanic Female Superintendents in America: A Profile

    Get PDF
Many school districts across the country are searching for competent leaders to head their school systems (Henry, 2000; Johnson, 1996). Tingley (1996), Bowler (2000), and Czaja and Harman (1997) reported a growing concern over the shortage of qualified applicants to lead the nation\u27s school districts. Fenwick (2000) stated that higher turnover rates, lower job appeal and a decreased number of candidates characterize the modern superintendency. As evidence, Fenwick (2000) quoted AASA Director Paul Houston as stating that, typically at any one time, interim superintendents hold 15% of superintendent positions. To compound the shortage problem, Krantz (2000) projected that 80% of superintendents are nearing retirement age. The lack of leaders to lead the nation\u27s school districts may be a crisis confronting the future of public education (Henry, 2000). With concerns of where future leaders of the nation\u27s school system will come from, the question arises: why aren\u27t more women entering the ranks of the superintendency

She was preparing an assignment for her graduate research course and experiencing extreme writer\u27s block. It just seemed as if nothing of substance was occurring, and finally in frustration she decided to leave her cubicle and wander through the library stacks. Her steps took her to the section marked "African American Studies" where she began to scan the shelves. Not long after, she found herself drawn to a book with the title, The Contributions of Blacks to the American Military: A Retrospective. Intrigued by both the text and the promise of narratives and faded photographs, she removed the book and began to turn the pages. Casually moving through pages that documented black men\u27s combat contributions from the Revolutionary War to World War II, she found herself drawn to the accounts and faces of "free men," stoic foot soldiers, aviators, marines, and army battalions""and, quite unexpectedly to a picture of what appeared to be a ship\u27s hold with thirteen black officers seated on graduated steps. Since there had been few photographs of blacks in the Navy, she stopped to look more closely at the picture and to read the names. Suddenly, her eyes widened with astonishment as she recognized the face of her own father. For the first time, at age 23, she was learning that he had been one of the first blacks commissioned as officers in the United States Navy. In that moment, his/story had become her/story too

Inscription on the Past from Present Inquiries: Historiography of Nineteenth Century Chinese Immigrant Public Women

    No full text
Chinese immigrant women arrived in America\u27s West in the mid nineteenth century. Their arrival marked the beginning of Chinese American women in the United States of America [1]. They left very few documents of their own. They were assumed to have followed the Chinese men to the West after the gold rush to serve the men. A majoritity of them were called "One Hundred Men\u27s Wives" or prostitutes [2]. In the Western construction and conceptualization of Chinese women of this particular time, they have been portrayed as victims of patriarchy and the capitalist system

Gender Pay Inequality: An Examination of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Six Years Later

    Get PDF
The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was the first piece of legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama in January of 2009.  This legislation enables an employee to sue more easily for wage discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  In this article, we examine the impact that the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act has had on gender pay equity discrimination complaints and on how the lower courts have interpreted it since it was signed into law in January of 2009.  First, we will provide a brief background about the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and a description of the legislation itself.  Then we will examine any changes in discrimination complaints since its passage, and we will analyze how lower courts have interpreted the legislation. We conclude by arguing that passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act has offered little redress for gender wage discrimination since its passage six years ago. Keywords:  gender discrimination, equal pay complaints, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Ac

Interweaving Life and Career: The Recursive Impact of Life and Career Decisions Among Female Higher Education Faculty

    Get PDF
Through this study the researchers sought to describe and understand the unidirectional and recursive impact of major life and career decisions on female higher education faculty, and subsequently scaffold emergent themes using life course theory. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with 12 female faculty members at an institution in the Intermountain west. Qualitative inquiry was used to analyze the interviews, providing rich descriptions and understanding from the perspective of the individuals\u27 lived experience. Five themes emerged from the interview data. These themes were then scaffolded within life course theory to frame an understanding of the interplay of major life and career decisions on the career trajectories of female higher education faculty. The themes were geographical choice, family, support structures, job type, and time/balance. These themes illustrated the primary aspects of life course theory, particularly the Timing of lives, Linked or interdependent lives, Human agency in making choices, Developmental risk and protection, and Diversity in life course trajectories. The usefulness of applying this theory when considering female faculty perceptions about their lived experiences was supported by the study findings; facilitating and deepening our understanding of the interaction of life events and career decisions among female faculty in the academy. Keywords: work life balance, career trajectory, female faculty, life course theory
