    The Theory of Disasters in the Letter of Mara Bar Serapion: Competition within Philosophical and Religious Doctrines of Disaster

    This essay investigates an aspect of religious competition in antiquity: theories of disasters, individual and collective, elaborated by religious and philosophical movements. This investigation intends to contribute to enlightening popular philosophical and religious theories of disasters in Roman imperial times through the case study of a Stoicizing document of (apparently) a Syrian Hellenized author of the Roman imperial times: the Letter of Mara Bar Serapion (or Sarapion) to his son, from the Roman imperial period. This will be examined in a systematic comparison with Stoic theories of disasters and within the larger issue of the Stoicizing ideas that this Letter displays. It will be argued that both a Christian and a Stoic (who likely heard of Jesus’ execution from Christian sources) could appropriate Jesus’ story and interpret it in their own construction of theories of disasters, which offered competing explanations of dreadful phenomena, both on the individual and on the collective plane alike

    Synthesizing Polyhydroxylated Indolizidines from D-Glucopyranoside

    The individual sugars that constitute more complex carbo-hydrates are joined together by glycosidic bonds. Glycosidase enzymes catalyze the hydrolysis of these glycosidic bonds. The action of glycosidases plays an important role in viral infections, cancer, and diabetes. Iminosugars are nitrogen containing sugar analogs that are known to inhibit glycosidase function. The main objective of this research is to synthesize four of the possible 32 stereoisomers of a tetrahydoxylated indolizidine iminosugar (Figure 1) starting from a commercially available D-glucopyranoside. After synthesizing pyrrolidine 6 (39.3%), a ring-closing metathesis was performed to generate the indolizidine 7. A ruthenium catalyzed dihydroxylation followed by acetylation of the resulting syn- diols gave indolizidines 8 and 9. Research is currently underway using a transition-metal catalyst and the oxidant TBHP to produce anti-diol isomers, 10 and 11

    © 2019 The Southern Finance Association and the Southwestern Finance Association We study the risk-taking implications of managerial pay-for-performance incentives (delta) arising from stock and stock options separately in the United States between 1992 and 2017. The current literature assumes that each unit of delta has an equal incentive effect on firm performance. Instead, we show that the risk-reducing effect of performance incentives is more pronounced for executives whose delta comes mostly from stock holdings relative to option holdings. Accordingly, we propose a new measure that takes into account the magnitude of delta from option holdings relative to delta from stock holdings (source ratio). Our results show that risk taking increases as this ratio increases

    Chunking of phonological units in speech sequencing

    © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Efficient speech communication requires rapid, fluent production of phoneme sequences. To achieve this, our brains store frequently occurring subsequences as cohesive “chunks” that reduce phonological working memory load and improve motor performance. The current study used a motor-sequence learning paradigm in which the generalization of two performance gains (utterance duration and errors) from practicing novel phoneme sequences was used to infer the nature of these speech chunks. We found that performance improvements in duration from practicing syllables with non-native consonant clusters largely generalized to new syllables that contained those clusters. Practicing the whole syllable, however, resulted in larger performance gains in error rates compared to practicing just the consonant clusters. Collectively, these findings are consistent with theories of speech production that posit the consonant cluster as a fundamental unit of phonological working memory and speech sequencing as well as those positing the syllable as a fundamental unit of motor programming

    Topological boundaries and bulk wavefunctions in the Su-Schreiffer-Heeger model

Working in the context of the Su-Schreiffer-Heeger model, the effect of topological boundaries on the structure and properties of bulk position-space wavefunctions is studied for a particle undergoing a quantum walk in a one-dimensional lattice. In particular, we consider what happens when the wavefunction reaches a boundary at which the Hamiltonian changes suddenly from one topological phase to another and construct an exact solution for the wavefunction on both sides of the boundary. The reflection and transmission coefficients at the boundary are calculated as a function of the system\u27s hopping parameters, and it is shown that for some parameter ranges the transmission coefficient can be made very small. Therefore, it is possible to arrange a high degree of bulk wavefunction localization within each topological region, a fact that has information processing applications. This \u27topologically-assisted\u27 suppression of transitions, although not of direct topological origin itself, exists because of the presence of an abrupt change in the properties of the Hamiltonian at the topological boundary.     Investigation of directional and directionally-unbiased devices in linear optics for quantum walk applications

    © 2019 SPIE. The optical beam splitter is one of the main building blocks in photonics-based quantum information processing. Traditionally, beam splitters are used in feed-forward configurations that reflect their natural directional-bias, meaning a photon cannot leave the scattering element through the entrance port. However, this directional-bias constraint can be circumvented by designing new linear-optical configurations that include mirrors in addition to the beam splitter. This directionality removal restores a full symmetry in the scattering element and allows the input photon to leave the system also from the input port. Such a system can be seen as a scattering center, enabling execution of quantum walks on rather complex optical graph networks with great savings in hardware resources when compared with existing approaches utilizing directionally-biased devices. The directionallyunbiased configuration can be realized using different optical systems. Analysis of some originally directional optical devices and the basic principles of their conversion into directionally-unbiased systems form the base of this paper. Several quantum walk procedures executed on graph networks constructed using directionallyunbiased nodes are discussed
