Precision Oncology bringing a paradigm shift in the treatment of cancer
Cancer is a complex and multifaceted disease having a number of composite problems to be considered including cancer immune evasion, therapy resistance, and recurrence for prevention and cure. Fundamentally it remains a genetic disease as diverse aspects of the complexity of tumor growth and cancer development relate to its genetic machinery and requires addressing the problems at the level of genome and epigenome. Presumably, the mutational changes occurring in the regulatory genes responsible for maintaining optimal cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation gradually lead to cancer progression and metastasis. Importantly, patients with the same cancer types respond differently to cancer therapies, indicating the need for a patient-specific treatment option for cancer cure. Precision oncology is the field of cancer research that focuses on the genetic profiling of individual tumors to identify targetable alterations involved in cancer development for custom-tailored personalized treatment of the disease. It is to rely upon the genomic study of cancer cells to get a clear picture of the prognosis and pathways involved in disease progression and to look for the means to selectively target them to ensure effective treatment of this deadly disease. Thus, precision oncology combines cancer diagnosis and prognosis followed by designing a treatment regimen for precise treatment of cancer at different stages and times. This article aims to briefly explain the foundations and frontiers of precision oncology in the context of technological advances being made in this direction to assess its scope and importance in the realization of a proper cure for cancer
Word learning with variable choice - 1
The goal of this study is to investigate whether prediction error drives declarative learning. We plan to replicate De Loof and colleagues’ 2018 study on the role of prediction error in learning new foreign translations of words without the use of extrinsic monetary reward. We hypothesise that prediction error will still drive memory in the absence of extrinsic reward, and consistent with the PIMMS framework (Greve et al., 2017), the magnitude of prediction error, but not the sign, will drive memory for the learned word pairs

The aim of this study is to conduct a scoping review of the available quantitative research regarding the association between populism and psychological variables related to national identity.

Testing the Wham-Womb Effect Among 5–7-year-old Children
This experiment explores the idea of sound symbolism (i.e., the phenomenon that different language sounds tend to reflect different meanings) among 5-7-year-old young children. A prior study examined a sound symbolic phenomenon named the “gleam-glum effect”. Adults and children were found to link novel pseudowords with the /i:/ vowel (as in “zeam”) with positive scenes, and novel pseudowords with the /^/ vowel (as in “zum”) with more negative scenes (See OSF links: https://osf.io/g8bx6 & https://osf.io/tu7j3). We will now investigate whether phonemes have associations related to arousal; specifically, whether the /æ/ phoneme (as in "zad") is associated with increased arousal and the /u/ phoneme (as in "zood") is associated with little to no arousal. We will examine this effect, named the “wham-womb effect”, in children using the same word-to-scene matching task as in the previous study. The current experiment will use drawings of animals in a scene presented in pairs: one showing an animal in an arousing situation and the other showing the same animal in a non-arousing situation. At the same time, children will hear the recording of two monosyllabic pseudo-words that differ only with one having the /æ/ vowel sound and the other having the /u/ vowel sound. They will be told that the pseudo-words are the names of the two pictures presented and will be asked to identify one of the two pictures given one of the pseudo-words. The following is an illustration of a trial: a picture of a crane that is angry (high arousal) is presented with a picture of a crane that is tired (low arousal). The audio instruction will say, "One of these is 'zad', and the other is 'zood'. Can you show me 'zood'?" Children will then be asked to choose between the two pictures. If the wham-womb effect exists in early childhood, we expect children to pair the arousing pictures with words containing the /æ/ vowel sound and the non-arousing pictures with words containing the /u/ vowel sound
MAPLE: A Multilingual Approach to Parent Language Estimates
Bilingual infants vary in when, how, and how often they hear each of their languages. Variables such as the particular languages of exposure, the community context, the onset of exposure, the amount of exposure, and socioeconomic status are crucial for describing any bilingual infant sample. Parent report is an effective approach for gathering data about infants’ language experience, however, its quality is highly dependent on how information is elicited. This paper introduces a Multilingual Approach to Parent Language Estimates (MAPLE). MAPLE promotes best practices for using structured interviews to reliably elicit information from parents on bilingual infants’ language background, with an emphasis on the challenging task of quantifying infants’ relative exposure to each language. We discuss sensitive issues that must be navigated in this process, including diversity in family characteristics and cultural values. Finally, we identify six systematic effects that can impact parent report, and strategies for minimizing their influence
The influence of acoustic startle probes on fear learning in humans
Even though human fear-conditioning involves affective learning as well as expectancy learning, most studies assess only one of the two distinct processes. Commonly used read-outs of associative fear learning are the fear-potentiated startle reflex (FPS), pupil dilation and US-expectancy ratings. FPS is thought to reflect the affective aspect of fear learning, while pupil dilation reflects a general arousal response. However, in order to measure FPS, aversively loud acoustic probes are presented during conditioning, which might in itself exert an effect on fear learning. Here we tested the effect of startle probes on fear learning by comparing brain activation (fMRI), pupil dilation and US-expectancy ratings with and without acoustic startle probes within subjects. Regardless of startle probes, fear conditioning resulted in enhanced dACC, insula and ventral striatum activation. Interaction analyses showed that startle probes diminished differential pupil dilation between CS+ and CS- due to increased pupil responses to CS-. A trend significant interaction effect was observed for US-expectancy and amygdala activation. Startle probes affect differential fear learning by impeding safety learning, as measured with pupil dilation, a read-out of the cognitive component of fear learning. However, we observed no significant effect of acoustic startle probes on other measures of fear learning
