A Comparative LCA of Light Gauge Steel and Traditional Masonry for Dwellings

Recently, it is evident that the light gauge steel modular dwellings are currently considered as a solution to enable mass home creation in Ireland. However, this type of structure is not considered for its sustainability or embodied carbon (EC) qualities. Life cycle assessment of this new method versus the traditional method of construction is a must with the aim of developing the innovation in construction methods. This paper compares the EC of a light gauge steel (LGS) modular dwelling against a traditional masonry (TM) dwelling to gain insight into the sustainability quality of this new structure typology and how low EC materials can be effective to reduce its total EC. The results show that the LGS is more carbon intensive than TM by 17.8%. As part of the study, an EC optimised LGS was studied where low carbon steel substituted the original LGS and considered assemblies efficiencies such as the floor slab removal and weather defence board use reduction. When these measures were combined the optimised LGS construction achieved a 15% carbon saving against the TM. With the sharply rising need for dwellings in Ireland, the paper recommends the optimised LGS modular dwellings as a sustainable solution to this growing crisis

Experimental and Numerical Investigation for Optimum Design of Hydraulic Steel Gates

Conventionally, steel gates are widely used in hydraulic structures for their superior mechanical properties in sustaining hydrostatic pressure. Maintenance and operational costs should be considered while studying the feasibility of these gates. In the current research, three prototype steel gates with different configurations were prepared and examined experimentally. The three gates have the same surface dimensions of (width x height) equal to (1.0 x 1.25 m). The first steel gate represents a typical traditional gate made of skin plate and stiffened laterally using standard steel channels and will be kept for comparison. The second gate represents a standard thicker plate without any stiffeners, while the third was a newly designed gate where two skin plates were stiffened using a latticed shape internal core. All the gates were loaded with equivalent hydrostatic pressure and their flexure performances were studied. Furthermore, parametrical study was conducted numerically using Finite Element (FE) software – ABAQUS. The numerical work investigated similar dimensions to the physically examined gates. The synthetic results of gates were of good agreement with the experimented gates. In addition, parametric study was also conducted. The performance of a large gate of size (4.0m x 4.0 m) was explored as well. The study concluded that internally stiffened latticed gate exerted the best performance among all gates. The highest loading capacity was achieved while having the least mass – 22% reduction in mass compared to traditional gate

The study aimed to identify the degree of practicing accompanying activities among students at northern Jordanian universities and its relationship to achieving social change from the students\u27 perspective. A descriptive survey method was used, with a questionnaire as the data collection tool. A random stratified sampling method was employed. The results showed that the degree of students’ practice of accompanying activities in northern Jordanian universities, from the students’ viewpoint, was moderate. Additionally, the results revealed that the level of achieving social change among students of northern Jordanian universities was rated as high. There was a statistically significant positive correlation at the significance level (α = 0.05) between the degree of students’ practice of accompanying activities and their level of social change achievement. The researchers recommend that universities in northern Jordan promote students\u27 participation in accompanying activities across all cultural, social, and scientific fields

If advertising discourse is governed by a clear communicative intention, the goal of which is to encourage the potential consumer to become a true consumer of the product or service, then the question to be addressed is: how does this transition occur, and through what communicative forms and discursive mechanisms? This article attempts to answer these questions by analyzing the mechanisms that guide the construction of the advertising message and determine the interpretation process

Spécificités du discours de l’enseignant : Entre gestes d’institutionnalisation et de reformulation

Our study attempts to demonstrate the value of exploring teacher discourse, particularly two gestures that we describe as linguistic and didactic gestures. This analysis is intended as a way to describe some of the processes inherent in teacher discourse, especially when the appropriation of knowledge is central to teaching action (Bucheton and Soulé 2009) and this action can only be understood through the paradigm of co-activity, in which language appears as a window onto teaching activity (Bucheton and Dezutter, 2008: 13). The work of the teacher in the school context is essentially linguistic; it is a spoken profession. But this activity can only be described by taking into account oral interactions, which rely on a constant back-and-forth between knowledge and the concrete situations that help us understand it (Nonnon, 1993). In this sense, it seems to us that this type of analysis is essential in initial and continuing teacher training. It allows us to pinpoint what is really at stake in oral interactions in terms of learning in order to raise teachers\u27 awareness of the importance of language gestures

    L’ISOTOPIE INTERTEXTUELLE

Textual cross-referencing is one of the major issues that characterize critical thinking. Between production and reception, the subject/reader is crossed by many forms of intertextual relations: rewriting, parody, prohibition, etc.; hence the reflection on intertextuality which has caused many inks to flow both in literary studies and in the sciences of language. The present work begins a reflection on the relations between literary texts under the auspices of isotopic relations. It is therefore a question of establishing intertextual constructions on an isotopic basis between a mythological substrate, the Odyssey, and the work of Amélie Nothomb, La biographie de la Faim: les enchainements isotopiques vont être le lieu de la signification, of all the semic recurrences instead of remaining frozen only in a co-prresence relationship. We will show to what extent the recurrence of inherent and related semantic traits participates in the development of an intertextual continuum
