Numerical Investigation of Thermal Effects on Concrete Bridges: Insights from Frame and Shell Modeling
Bridges are essential structural components of transportation networks, and their performance is significantly influenced by temperature variations. Thermal expansion and contraction can induce stresses that affect structural stability, necessitating accurate modeling techniques for design and maintenance. This study investigates the thermal behavior of a three-span continuous box girder bridge using two different numerical modeling approaches: the Frame Element model and the Shell Element model. The research evaluates the effects of uniform temperature conditions (20°C) and a temperature gradient of ±5°C, focusing on bending moments, normal forces, and fiber stresses. Results indicate that the Shell Element model predicts bending moments and stresses 20-40% lower than the Frame Element model under uniform temperature conditions. However, when subjected to a temperature gradient of +5°C, variations in results increase, highlighting the Shell Element model’s sensitivity to localized stress distributions. The findings suggest that while the Shell Element model is more reliable for capturing detailed thermal effects, it may be more complicated and takes more time in analysis than the Frame Model. These insights contribute to the refinement of bridge design methodologies and maintenance strategies, ensuring the structural resilience of concrete bridges in diverse climatic conditions
Evaluating the Role of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Minimizing Delays and Reducing Costs in Construction Projects
The implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a construction industry technology delivers extensive effects on project duration and financial management. This investigation examines BIM as a technology specifically designed to cut down construction project delays and decrease expenditures. The scholarly review of existing research material through a secondary approach allows this study to identify BIM\u27s major value contributions.
The implementation of BIM technology enables project schedules to reach improved accuracy which results in a reduction of project delays by 15-25% because of its automation features and effective clash detection and real-time coordination benefits. The application of building information modeling platforms achieves financial efficiency through cost reductions reaching 10–20% and waste reduction in rework reaching approximately 15%. The project achieved material waste reduction worth 20% through efficient resource usage along with waste management techniques.
The research study recognizes four main barriers which hinder the widespread acceptance of BIM technology including expensive initial implementation expenses and a lack of qualified personnel and regulatory restrictions plus organizational reluctance to embrace technological advancements. The proposed recommendations focus on obtaining government support through incentives while offering specific BIM training and adopting a step-by-step BIM implementation approach.
The research establishes BIM as fundamental for modern construction management which improves delivery results and financial stability through contemporary management techniques such as Lean construction and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A Critical Review of Electrochemical Chloride Extraction: Mechanisms, Effectiveness, and Impact on Concrete Properties
Chloride-induced corrosion poses a significant threat to the durability and service life of reinforced concrete structures, necessitating effective rehabilitation strategies. This research provides a comprehensive review of electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) for reinforced concrete structures. It explores the mechanisms behind ECE and highlights the factors that influence the treatment\u27s efficiency. Key elements discussed include ECE setup parameters (current density, treatment duration, anode/electrolyte type, temperature) and concrete mix properties (binder type, water-to-binder ratio, cover thickness, reinforcement details). The review also explores ECE\u27s effects on concrete microstructure, including hydration products, porosity, alkali-aggregate reaction, and potential for hydrogen embrittlement, as well as its impact on steel-concrete bond and compressive strength. Understanding these interdependencies is crucial for optimizing ECE applications. Our analysis concludes that current density is paramount for ECE efficiency, with higher densities generally increasing removal. However, careful selection is crucial to prevent adverse effects like hydrogen embrittlement and bond loss between steel and concrete. Furthermore, the Well-considered choice of anode and electrolyte is critical for project-specific success and maximizing ECE effectiveness
Gradually Varied Flow in Horizontal Circular Open Channels
In investigations of gradually varied flow, open channels are categorized according to bed slope as horizontal, mild, critical, steep, and adverse. A canal is referred to as horizontal if its bed slope is zero. In open-channel hydraulics, calculating the water surface profile in an open channel is regarded as a crucial part of channel design. The objective of this present study is to solve the gradually varied flow in open circular channel with horizontal slope by using two mathematical methods called; direct integration method and Runge-Kutta method. The presented study used the experimental works to offer an explicit closed-form semi-analytical solution for a circular channel based on Manning\u27s equation with variable roughness. Laboratory experimental runs in circular flume for eleven different discharges were carried in circular cross-section flume with horizontal slope. The results obtained from the laboratory are compared with the results obtained from the two mathematical methods.
The direct integration method has a minimum percentage error of 1.5% and a maximum of 10.7% for the length of H3 curves. The direct integration method has a minimum percentage error of 1.57% and a maximum of 21.23% for the length of H2 curves. For the water depths of H3 curves, the Runge-Kutta method exhibits a minimum percentage error of 0.04% and a maximum of 5.11%.
The maximum error in water surface for all runs using the Runge-Kutta method is 2.99% for H2 curves given the same curve length and minimum 0.00%. The suggested techniques are suitable for the early design phase of circular channels with horizontal bed slope, with the aim of lowering the computational cost involved at this stage
