Development of a Drive-rod Unified Variable Pitch Control Mechanism for Small-scale Horizontal Wind Turbines

    Get PDF
Typically, small-scale wind turbines use either a breaking equipment or stall control methods once the wind speed exceeds its rated value. This is to limit the power extracted from the wind turbines which largely depends on the blades\u27 shape and pitch angle. Most of small-scale wind turbines are of fixed pitch angle to avoid complexity and cost. In this work, a novel drive-rod unified variable pitch drive mechanism is proposed for blades pitch control for small-scale horizontal wind turbines. The mechanism is powered by a DC motor coupled with a lead screw which in turn is connected to the pitch drive mechanism. Details of the mechanical design and Kinematic relations relating the Dc motor angular position and the blades’ pitch angle is also discussed

Non-Linear Analysis of Axially Loaded Built-Up Open Section Cold-Formed Columns

    Get PDF
Built-up open cold-formed sections are commonly used in entrances, structural corners, and window frames. These elements exhibit low torsional stiffness and are highly susceptible to cross-sectional deformation. Battened built-up cold-formed steel (CFS) open columns offer enhanced load-carrying capacity when individual profiles cannot withstand applied loads. Extensive research has focused on understanding the buckling behavior of these structural elements. However, limited studies have explored the impact of spacing between cold-formed C-channel sections. Existing research suggests that battened columns with adequately spaced members exhibit superior structural performance compared to those with closely spaced channels. A critical factor affecting the performance of battened columns is the slenderness ratio of the unsupported length (Lz) between batten plates. Despite its significance, this aspect has been insufficiently explored in prior studies. The literature lacks defined limiting values for different column slenderness ratios, back-to-back distances between channel sections, and unsupported lengths between batten plates. Consequently, design methods proposed by various researchers may be unreliable. This study investigates the performance of axially loaded pin-ended columns, comprising two appropriately spaced lipped C-channels arranged back-to-back to form open built-up sections. Finite element models were developed using the ABAQUS platform and validated against test results from the literature. Following validation, the models were used for a comprehensive parametric analysis by varying key parameters, such as back-to-back distance, depth-to-width ratios, number of battens, column slenderness ratios, and the relative slenderness of unsupported chords. The study provides a detailed evaluation of how these parameters influence the structural performance of battened columns, offering valuable insights for design optimization and performance assessment

Mechanical Properties of High Strength Geopolymer Concrete Incorporating Silica fume and Hybrid fibers

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Geopolymer is considered to be an eco-friendly binder and replacement for ordinary Portland cement as it leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions and energy saving. This study investigates the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete, focusing on its early-age (7 and 28 days) and late-age (56 days) mechanical performance. Four experimental groups were designed, each incorporating different material compositions to assess their influence on compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and to develop optimal mix proportions for geopolymer concrete that balance mechanical performance, minimizing the carbon footprint while maximizing strength .A total of nine fly ash-based geopolymer mixtures designs were examined to obtain an optimal constituent mixes corresponding to high mechanical strength . Group 1 examined the effect of varying fly ash content, while Group 2 introduced silica fume at 10% and 20% replacement levels. Group 3 incorporated both silica fume and steel fibers (1%) to evaluate their combined impact, whereas Group 4 explored silica fume, introducing macro and micro polypropylene hybrid fibers .The results indicate that silica fume enhances strength moderately, but its effect is significantly amplified when combined with fibers. Steel fibers yielded the highest improvements in tensile and flexural strength, particularly in Mix M5 (1% Steel Fiber + 20% Silica fume), making it ideal for high-stress structural applications. Conversely, polypropylene fibers improve tensile and flexural strength, but not as significantly as steel Fibers . Compressive strength improvement was moderate, similar to steel fiber, making them suitable for lightweight or impact-resistant structures.so it contributed to durability and crack resistance, improving toughness rather than significantly increasing strength
