    Habitatkartlegging i Ørstavassdraget i 2022

    Get PDF

Hypoxia-tolerant zooplankton may reduce biological carbon pump efficiency in the Humboldt current system off Peru

In the ocean, downward flux of particles produced in sunlit surface waters is the major component of the biological carbon pump, which sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide and fuels deep-sea ecosystems. The efficiency of downward carbon transfer is expected to be particularly high in tropical upwelling systems where hypoxia occurring beneath the productive surface waters is thought to hamper particle consumption. However, observations of both particle feeders and carbon export in low-oxygen waters are scarce. Here, we provide evidence that hypoxia-tolerant zooplankton feed on sinking particles in the extensive Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) off Peru. Using several arrays of drifting sediment traps and in situ imaging, we show geochemical and morphological transformations of sinking particles and substantial control of carbon export by zooplankton. Our findings challenge the assumption of a consistently efficient biological carbon pump in OMZs and further demonstrate the need to consider mesopelagic organisms when studying oceanic carbon sequestration.publishedVersio

Abstract Aims Estimate prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and its treatment in Norway 2010–2020 and explore impact of new national GDM guidelines in 2017. Methods We identified women giving birth in a nationwide cohort study using registers on births, prescriptions, education, primary and specialist care. For each year, we estimated prevalence of GDM overall, by BMI, age, education, and mother’s birthplace; proportions of GDM pregnancies receiving pharmacological treatment; and distribution of the gestational week when GDM was diagnosed. Results In 633,169 pregnancies, prevalence of GDM increased from 2.6 % in 2010 to 6.0 % in 2016, then stabilized. Similar patterns were seen across strata of BMI, age, education, and maternal birthplace, although prevalence was higher with higher BMI, higher age, lower education, and mothers born in Asia, Africa, or Middle East. The proportion of the GDM population pharmacologically treated increased from 11.6 % in 2010 to 13.6 % in 2016 and 31.6 % in 2020. GDM was diagnosed in recommended gestational week 24–28 in 19 % versus 45 % of GDM pregnancies in 2010 and 2020, respectively. Conclusions Both the proportion diagnosed with GDM within recommended time of screening, and who received pharmacological treatment, increased substantially following new guidelines in 2017. Prevalence of GDM increased from 2010 to 2016, then plateaued.Prevalence and treatment of gestational diabetes in Norway 2010–2020publishedVersio

    Storbyenes rolle i generalistkommunesystemet

Development and validation of the attitude towards Surrogacy Scale in a polish sample

    Get PDF
Surrogacy—is one of the most controversial methods of infertility treatment. This concept is associated with difficult ethical, psychological and social issues, in which each aspect may lead to different trends in attitudes. The study of attitudes in society plays an important role in the analysis of various aspects of a given phenomenon, helps to fill legal gaps and ambiguities, and to transform controversial dimensions into normative concepts. Thus, this study aimed to develop and validate a scale to assess the attitudes towards surrogacy. The survey used in this study, consisted of 24 questions, which were organized into the four subscales: general opinion on surrogacy and its social context (7 items), financing and legalizing surrogacy (8 items), the acceptance of surrogacy (4 items), and attitudes towards the intended parents and children born through surrogacy (5 items). 442 individuals participated in this study. The final version of Attitude towards Surrogacy Scale consists of 15 questions, grouped in three subscales: opinion on surrogacy ethical context, financing and legalizing surrogacy, and an acceptance of surrogacy. This is the first scale in Poland for the assessment of general attitudes towards surrogacy. This measure allows to capture the opinions towards three aspects of surrogacy: surrogacy’s ethical context, the financing and legalizing surrogacy, and acceptance of surrogacy. The scale can be addressed to various groups in the society, not only for studies related to reproductive medicine.publishedVersio

Tectonic-magmatic-hydrothermal interactions in a hot dry rock geothermal system: The role of the transfer and normal faults in the Acoculco caldera (Mexico)

    No full text
In the Acoculco caldera (hot dry rock system) two geothermal boreholes were planned to intersect fracture systems in the carbonate basement. Even though the caldera is located in an area of active deformation with high rainfall, a scarce permeability was recognized. To shed light on this apparent mismatch, we investigate the area by integrating a structural and kinematic dataset on faults and fractures with the volcanological data. The results highlighted two main coeval fault systems, NW- and NE striking respectively, and two associated minor N-S and E-W striking sets, affecting the area of the Acoculco caldera and controlling its volcanic evolution. The kinematic analysis on fault-slip surfaces demonstrated that the NW-striking faults are characterized by two superposed movements: the first comprises right strike-slip to right lateral oblique-slip, while the second is dominantly normal. In contrast, the NE-striking structures display only dominantly normal movements. We explain the kinematic evolution by two recurring events, determined by the interplay between regional extension and uplift: when a crustal extension was dominant in the region (first kinematic event), the NW- and NE-trending structures played the role of transfer and normal faults, respectively; in contrast, when uplift predominated (second kinematic event) both the pre-existing NW- and NE-striking faults acted with normal movements. The location of eruptive centers is controlled by the permeability along the regional faults and their step-over zones. A closer analysis carried out in the surroundings of the geothermal boreholes suggests that deformation migrated northwards, and that fractures are sealed in this sector of Acoculco, thus strongly reducing permeability. In this view, the most promising areas for potential permeability at depth might occur northwards, beyond of the Acoculco caldera, and along the NW-trending structures. In conclusion, the fault kinematics is influenced by periods of increased partial melting of the lithosphere, the latter determining anomalous heat flux and uplift. This process interacts with the fluid pathways that are in turn controlled by the tectonic segmentation, and this is a new model to explain the tectonic-magmatic and hydrothermal interaction of this region.publishedVersio

The stability of present-day Antarctic grounding lines - Part 2: Onset of irreversible retreat of Amundsen Sea glaciers under current climate on centennial timescales cannot be excluded

    Get PDF
Observations of ocean-driven grounding-line retreat in the Amundsen Sea Embayment in Antarctica raise the question of an imminent collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Here we analyse the committed evolution of Antarctic grounding lines under the present-day climate. To this aim, we first calibrate a sub-shelf melt parameterization, which is derived from an ocean box model, with observed and modelled melt sensitivities to ocean temperature changes, making it suitable for present-day simulations and future sea level projections. Using the new calibration, we run an ensemble of historical simulations from 1850 to 2015 with a state-of-the-art ice sheet model to create model instances of possible present-day ice sheet configurations. Then, we extend the simulations for another 10 000 years to investigate their evolution under constant present-day climate forcing and bathymetry. We test for reversibility of grounding-line movement in the case that large-scale retreat occurs. In the Amundsen Sea Embayment we find irreversible retreat of the Thwaites Glacier for all our parameter combinations and irreversible retreat of the Pine Island Glacier for some admissible parameter combinations. Importantly, an irreversible collapse in the Amundsen Sea Embayment sector is initiated at the earliest between 300 and 500 years in our simulations and is not inevitable yet – as also shown in our companion paper (Part 1, Hill et al., 2023). In other words, the region has not tipped yet. With the assumption of constant present-day climate, the collapse evolves on millennial timescales, with a maximum rate of 0.9 mm a−1 sea-level-equivalent ice volume loss. The contribution to sea level by 2300 is limited to 8 cm with a maximum rate of 0.4 mm a−1 sea-level-equivalent ice volume loss. Furthermore, when allowing ice shelves to regrow to their present geometry, we find that large-scale grounding-line retreat into marine basins upstream of the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf and the western Siple Coast is reversible. Other grounding lines remain close to their current positions in all configurations under present-day climate.publishedVersio
