Preventive behaviors, knowledge of esophageal cancer and relationships socio-demographic characteristics among older adults: A cross sectional study
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the risks of esophageal cancer (EC), protective behaviors, and risk awareness among Turkish adults aged 50 years and older, as well as their relationships with sociodemographic characteristics. Design: Cross-sectional. Recruitment took place between February-April 2022, via online google forms and WhatsApp. Setting: Participants completed the survey online throught WhatsApp. Sample: Analyses included 214 participants (>= 50 years from three provinces of Turkey); 73.8% female (n:158), 62.6% between 50-60 years (n:134 ), 55.6% had a university education (n:47). Measures: Study-specific survey items included questions about demographics, risky conditions and diseases, preventive health behaviors and Esophageal Cancer Knowledge Test (ECRKT). Analyses: Frequency or Mean, Percentage, Independent Samples t-Test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), post hoc analysis (Tukey, LSD), and Cohen's effect size and linear regression analysis. Results: The participants had low ECRKT scores (x:13.50 +/- 9.33, Min:0, Max:31) and reported the most consumed hot beverages (36.9%) among negative EC preventive behaviors. Male gender, not working, not having previously received training on EC, low education and income status cause low knowledge and awareness about EC (P = 50 years are exposed to significant EC risks, and have poor knowledge of EC risks. These results highlight the urgent need for educational campaigns to improve EC awareness
A novel homozygous cga > tga mutation at codon 123 (exon 6) of b-linker protein (blnk) as a potential cause of hepatopathy and rickets: A case report
BLNK deficiency is a subtype of autosomal recessive immune disorders that involves a lack of B cells, agammaglobulinemia, and recurrent infections. We present the case of a 29-year-old Turkish female with BLNK deficiency caused by a novel homozygous CGA > TGA mutation at codon 123 (exon 6) in the BLNK gene. She developed severe liver failure and rickets at the age of 12. Although BLNK mutations are a rare cause of agammaglobulinemia, it is important to consider them in patients with B-cell deficiency and non-immune involvement
Intestinal endometriosis amongst other extra-pelvic endometriosis foci presenting as acute/subacute bowel obstruction in women of reproductive age: A retrospective case series study
Background This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinicopathological correlates of intestinal endometriosis, amongst other extra-pelvic endometriosis foci, presenting as bowel obstruction in general surgery practice. Methods A total of 23 female patients (mean +/- SD age: 34.9 +/- 6.5 years) who underwent abdominal surgery for acute bowel obstruction and received histopathological diagnosis of endometriosis were included in this retrospective case-series study. Data on patient characteristics, obstetric history, preoperative laboratory and imaging findings, preoperative provisional diagnosis, type of surgical intervention and the pathological diagnosis, and postoperative outcomes were recorded. Results Definitive diagnoses on histopathological work-up involved intestinal endometriosis (52.2%), scar endometriosis (26.0%), ovarian endometriosis (13.0%) and inguinal endometriosis (8.7%). Postoperative complication, reoperation and recurrence rates were 8.7%, 8.7%, and 13.0%, respectively. Intestinal endometriosis, when compared to other extra-pelvic endometriosis foci (scar and inguinal), was associated with significantly higher preoperative platelet counts (332.0(284.0-528.0)vs. 239.0(223.0-370.0) 103/mu L, p = 0.010), lower albumin levels (4.0(2.7-4.7) vs. 4.5(4.2-4.9) g/dL, p = 0.029), higher rates of preoperative CT utilization (91.7% vs. 0.0%, p < 0.001) and emergent surgery (83.3% vs. 0.0%, p = 0.001) and longer LOS (median 4.5 (1.0-26.0) vs. 1.0(1.0-1.0) days, p = 0.001) along with a non-significant tendency for higher postoperative complication (16.7% vs. 0.0%) and ICU stay (25.0% vs. 0.0%) rates. Conclusion Our findings revealed intestinal endometriosis, predominantly in the terminal ileum/appendix, was the most common extra-pelvic cause of acute bowel obstruction. The scar endometriosis, inguinal endometriosis and ovarian endometriosis appeared to be other potential but less prevalent aetiologies in this setting
A research on determining the effect of drought on fresh fruit and vegetables production : The example of Korkuteli district
İklim değişikliği, uzun vadede sıcaklık ve yağış düzenlerinde gözlenen olumsuz yönlü sapmaları tanımlamak için kullanılan bir kavramdır. Küresel ölçekte olduğu gibi Türkiye’de de iklim değişikliğinin sonuçları açık biçimde hissedilmektedir. Ortalama ve ekstrem sıcaklıkların artması, yağış miktarında azalma olması yanında yağış şiddetinin artması iklim değişikliğinin hissedilen etkileridir. Yağış ve sıcaklık değerlerinden doğrudan etkilenen tarım sektörü, iklim değişikliğinin etkilerini en fazla hisseden sektörlerden birisidir. Bu çalışmada, Antalya ili Korkuteli ilçesinde gerçekleştirilen yaş sebze ve meyve üretiminde iklim değişikliğinin olası etkisi belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Öncelikle bölgedeki sıcaklık ve yağış miktarı değerlerinin yaklaşık son 50 yıl içerisindeki değişimi incelenmiştir. Yaş sebze ve meyve üreticilerinin iklim değişikliğine yönelik algılarını, risk değerlendirmelerini ve adaptasyon davranışlarını belirlemek içinde anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Bölgenin sıcaklık ve yağış değerlerinin incelenmesi sonucunda, ortalama sıcaklıkların artış eğiliminde olduğunu ve yağış rejimlerinde düzensizliklerin meydana geldiği belirlenmiştir. Yapılan anket çalışması sonuçlarına göre, üreticilerin büyük çoğunluğunun iklim değişikliğinden etkilendiği ve buna yönelik önlemler almak zorunda kaldıkları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.Climate change refers to adverse changes in temperature and precipitation patterns. As is the case worldwide, the effects of climate change are also evident in our country. The increase in average and extreme temperatures, the decrease in precipitation amounts, and the increase in precipitation intensity are among the noticeable effects of climate change. The agricultural sector, which is directly affected by precipitation and temperature values, is one of the sectors most affected by climate change. In this study, the potential impact of climate change on fresh vegetable and fruit production in the Korkuteli district of Antalya province was investigated. First, the changes in temperature and rainfall amounts in the region over the past 50 years were examined. A survey was conducted to determine the perceptions of fresh vegetable and fruit producers regarding climate change, their risk assessments, and their adaptation behaviors. The analysis of temperature and precipitation values in the region revealed that average temperatures are increasing and irregularities are occurring in precipitation patterns. According to the results of the survey, it was concluded that the majority of producers are affected by climate change and are forced to take measures to address it
Navigating the transition: Assessing continuity and loss in endocrinology care
BackgroundTransition describes preparing children with chronic illnesses for adult healthcare and gradually transferring their care, starting late adolescence. Joint meetings and visits are recommended during this process. This study examines an 8-year transition experience in our clinic, focusing on the differences between adult and pediatric endocrinology practices and the rates of loss to follow-up in specific disease groups.MethodsThree hundred thirty-five patients evaluated in transition meetings were included. The frequency of visits 1 year before transition, during the first and second years after transition, the number of patients lost to follow-up and disease groups were analyzed.ResultsAmong the patients discussed in the transition meetings, 56.3% participated in joint visits. Post-transition, 82.5% of patients continued their follow-up care, while 17.5% were lost to follow-up. There was a statistically significant difference in the number of visits before and after the first year of transition (P = 0.000).ConclusionTo increase adaptation during the transition, informing patients and families about the process at every visit after late adolescence is beneficial. Moreover, scheduling joint visits on flexible dates and increasing the number of joint visits per patient could substantially enhance patient participation and follow-up rates. We observed that patient follow-up frequency was higher in pediatric endocrinology due to differences in pediatric and internal medicine practices
Evaluation of playgrounds in Bursa city parks in terms of developmental requirements
Plansız ve düzensiz kentleşme, ekolojik dengeyi bozan bir dizi sorunu beraberinde getirerek, kentlerin yaşam kalitesini tehdit etmektedir. Kentlerin yaşanabilirliği, o alanda yaşayan bireylerin tüm gereksinimlerini karşılama potansiyeli ile ölçülebilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, kent nüfusunun %40’ını oluşturan çocukların gereksinimlerinin önceliklendirilmesi gerekmektedir. Çocuklar için oyun, gelişim sürecinin önemli bir parçasıdır ve motor, bilişsel ve sosyal gelişimlerine katkı sağlamaktadır. Çalışma, Bursa ilinde yer alan dört kent parkında yer alan çocuk oyun alanlarının belirlenen 19 ölçüt doğrultusunda çocukların motor, bilişsel ve sosyal gelişim gereksinimlerini ne ölçüde karşıladığını araştırarak uygunluk ve yeterliliklerini belirlemektedir. Yapılan değerlendirmeler sonucunda, incelenen parklar arasında en yüksek uygunluk oranının Merinos Parkı (%56,43), en düşük uygunluk oranının ise Kültürpark’ta (%46,57) olduğu saptanmıştır. Araştırma, çocuk oyun alanlarının eksikliklerinin giderilmesi ve yerel ihtiyaçlara uygun şekilde yeniden tasarlanmasının önemine işaret etmektedir. Ayrıca, kentlerin yaşanabilirliğini artırmak amacıyla disiplinlerarası planlama ve tasarım süreçlerinin entegre bir şekilde yürütülmesi gerektiği vurgulanmaktadır.Unplanned and unregulated urbanization brings about a series of challenges that disrupt ecological balance and threaten urban quality of life. The livability of cities is measured by their ability to meet the diverse needs of the population. In this context, prioritizing the needs of children, who constitute 40% of the urban population, is essential. Play is a crucial component of children’s development, contributing significantly to their motor, cognitive, and social growth. This study evaluates the suitability and adequacy of children’s playgrounds in four urban parks in Bursa, Turkey, based on 19 pre-determined criteria. The analysis investigates the extent to which these playgrounds meet children's motor, cognitive, and social development requirements. The findings reveal that among the parks examined, Merinos Park had the highest suitability rate (56.43%), while Kültürpark demonstrated the lowest suitability rate (46.57%). The study underscores the importance of addressing deficiencies in children’s playgrounds and redesigning them to align with local needs. Moreover, it highlights the necessity of conducting interdisciplinary planning and design processes to enhance urban livability
Potential use of<i> trachystemon</i><i> officinalis</i> (l.) g. don (boraginaceae) plant extracts in the control of<i> tetranychus</i><i> urticae</i> koch (acari: Tetranychidae) and the relationship between its biological activity and phenolic compounds
This study investigated the acaricidal and repellent properties of Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don (Boraginaceae) extracts against Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), a significant agricultural pest. Extracts were obtained from plant material subjected to shade and oven drying, using distilled water, methanol, and 75 % methanol containing 0.1 % formic acid. The aqueous extract prepared from oven-dried material (ES) exhibited the highest mortality, causing 92.93 % mortality at 10 % concentration after 24 h. In contrast, the methanol-formic acid extract from shade-dried material (GF) showed the strongest repellent activity (86.67 %) at 1 % concentration, with the effect persisting over 24 h. Biochemical profiling through LC-MS/MS identified major phenolic constituents, including rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, o- and p-salicylic acid, p-coumaric acid, and protocatechuic acid. Rosmarinic acid was the most abundant phenolic compound, particularly in the GF. The extract also exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity (2073.42 mg GAE/100 g dry matter (dm)) in total phenolic content (TPC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. A positive correlation was observed between the salicylic acid content of the ES extract and its acaricidal activity. High levels of rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, p-salicylic acid, and chrysophanol were detected in shade-dried methanol (GM) and oven-dried methanol (EM) extracts, which had the highest repellency. Drying methods and solvents significantly influenced biological activity: water extracts were more acaricidal on T. urticae, while methanol extracts were more repellent. These findings suggest that T. orientalis could serve as a natural alternative to synthetic acaricides, offering a safer option for integrated pest management in sustainable agriculture. Future research should explore field applications, interactions with biopesticides, and effects on other pest populations and ecosystems
Improving quality in surgical intensive care: The critical impact of intensivist presence and the semiopen unit model
Background: It is well known that intensivist in the intensive care unit (ICU) is critical for optimal patient care. However, today the majority of surgical intensive care units (SICUs) provide service in an open model. Our aim was to assess the effects of appointing an intensivist to the SICU and transitioning to a semi-open working model on patient outcomes and various quality indicators. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in a seven-bed SICU of a university hospital. Two groups were created from patients treated before (preintensivist period) and after (postintensivist period) the change of ICU management. Demographic data of the patients, disease severity scores, surgical interventions performed, and intensive care quality indicators were collected and statistically compared between the two periods. Reporting of this study complied with the "Revised Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE 2.0)" standards. Results: With the introduction of an intensive care specialist during working hours and the adoption of a semiopen working model, the following improvements were observed: the average length of stay decreased from 11 days versus 5 days, the average duration of mechanical ventilation reduced from 5.6 days versus 1 day, and the rate of mechanical ventilation use decreased from 48% versus 21%. A significant reduction in the need for tracheostomy was also noted (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the bed turnover rate increased from 20 versus 24, enhancing bed utilization efficiency. Additionally, the observed mortality rate of 15% was lower than the expected rate of 25%, resulting in a significant reduction in the standardized mortality ratio (from 1.05 vs. 0.6). Conclusion: This study proves that surgeon-intensivist collaboration and a semiopen model in ICUs play a critical role by reducing mortality, increasing resource utilization efficiency, and improving patient outcomes. Our findings emphasize the need to restructure SICU processes with a multidisciplinary approach
Investigation on effectiveness of Coriandrum sativum L. (Coriander Herb) extract against Varroosis infestations in honey bees in Artvin Region
Bu araştırma, Artvin yöresinde arılarda varroosis tedavisinde kullanılan ticari bir preparat ile Coriandrum sativum L. (kişniş otu) bitki ekstraktının %5 ve %20’lik yoğunlukta hazırlanmış solusyonlarının erken ilkbahar ve geç sonbaharda etkinliğinin karşılaştırılması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Her iki mevsimde de arılı 7 kovana ilaç verilmemiş, 7 kovana %5’lik Coriandrum sativum L., 7 kovana %20’lik Coriandrum sativum L. ve 7 kovana da 500mg Amitraz şerit uygulanmıştır. Uygulamalar sonrasında kovandaki Varroa etkenleri toplanmıştır. İlkbahar uygulamasında %5’lik Coriandrum sativum L. solusyonunun %16.07, %20’lik solusyonun ise %49.02 oranında etkili olduğu görülmüştür. Sonbaharda bu oran %5’lik solusyonda %11.91, %20’lik solüsyonda ise %54.12 olarak belirlenmiştir. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları Coriandrum sativum L. bitki ekstraktının varroasid etki gösterdiğini ortaya koymaktadır.This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of a commercial preparation used in the treatment of varroosis on bees with 5% and 20% solutions of Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander) plant extract during early spring and late autumn in Artvin. In both seasons, no treatment was applied to 7 beehives, while 7 beehives were treated with 5% Coriandrum sativum L., 7 beehives with 20% Coriandrum sativum L., and 7 beehives with 500 mg Amitraz strips. Following the applications, Varroa mites in the hives were collected. In the spring application, the 5% Coriandrum sativum L. preparation was found to have an efficacy rate of 16.07%, while the 20% preparation exhibited an efficacy of 49.02%. In the autumn application, the efficacy rates were 11.91% for the 5% preparation and 54.12% for the 20% preparation. The results of this study indicate that Coriandrum sativum L. plant extracts exhibit varroacidal effects
Experimental investigation thermal behaviours of a Li-Ion battery cell under different ambient conditions
Bu tez çalışmasında, lityum-iyon batarya hücresinin düşük ortam sıcaklıklarında (–5 °C, 0 °C, +5 °C) sergilediği ısıl davranışlar deneysel olarak incelenmiştir. Çalışmada kese tipi bir batarya hücresi, sıcaklığı hassas biçimde kontrol edilebilen bir termal kabin içerisine yerleştirilerek belirlenen sıcaklıklarda şarj ve deşarj testleri yapılmıştır. Şarj süreci sabit akım-sabit voltaj (CC-CV) yöntemiyle, deşarj ise sabit akım (CC) yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Deneyler sırasında hücre yüzey sıcaklıkları hem temaslı (K tipi termokupl) sensörlerle hem de termal kamera ile izlenmiştir. Toplanan sıcaklık verileri; zamana, akıma ve voltaja bağlı olarak grafiksel olarak değerlendirilmiş, hücre yüzeyinde konuma bağlı sıcaklık dağılımları yorumlanmıştır. Bulgular, düşük sıcaklıklarda özellikle şarj sürecinde sıcaklık artışının daha belirgin olduğunu, hücrenin merkezinden katoda doğru yayılan bir ısı transferi yaşandığını ve bu durumun iç direnç artışına bağlı geliştiğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca, voltaj eğrilerinde düşük sıcaklıklarda daha erken voltaj düşüşleri ve artan polarizasyon farkları gözlemlenmiştir. Bu çalışma, düşük sıcaklık koşullarında batarya hücrelerinin performansını ve güvenliğini etkileyen parametrelerin anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Elde edilen veriler, elektrikli araçlarda batarya yönetim sistemlerinin düşük sıcaklık senaryolarına göre optimize edilmesi açısından önem taşımaktadır.In this thesis, the thermal behaviors of lithium-ion battery cells at low ambient temperatures (-5°C, 0°C, +5°C) were experimentally investigated. In the study, a pouch battery cell was placed in a thermal cabin with precisely controlled temperature and charge and discharge tests were performed at the determined temperatures. The charging process was carried out with the constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) method, and the discharge was carried out with the constant current (CC) method. During the experiments, cell surface temperatures were monitored with both K-type thermocouple and a thermal camera. The collected temperature data were evaluated graphically depending on time, current and voltage, and the temperature distributions depending on the position on the cell surface were interpreted. The findings show that the temperature increase is more pronounced especially during the charging process at low ambient temperatures, that there is a heat transfer spreading from the center of the cell to the cathode, and that this situation develops due to the increase in internal resistance. In addition, earlier voltage drops and increased polarization differences were observed in the voltage curves at low temperatures. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the parameters that affect the performance and safety of battery cells under low temperature conditions. The data obtained are important for optimizing battery management systems in electric vehicles according to low temperature scenarios
