    Challenge-based learning as a catalyst for global competence : a qualitative study of student experiences in two ENLIGHT consortium’s blended learning modules

    This qualitative study explores students’ perceptions regarding the potential of Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) to foster global competence within higher education, specifically within two blended learning modules offered by the European ENLIGHT consortium. Although widely applied in STEM, CBL’s effectiveness in non-STEM contexts, particularly for intercultural collaboration and societal responsibility, is less understood. Through thematic analysis of eight focus groups with 34 participants, key themes were identified. Results suggest that CBL promotes critical engagement with global issues, supporting the development of essential skills for an interconnected world. However, challenges in the blended format, such as difficulties in early-stage online collaboration, indicate that refining the instructional design could further optimize outcomes. This study contributes to a broader understanding of CBL’s role in global competence education and provides insights for optimizing its application in diverse academic contexts

    Z2^3-grading of the Lie algebra G2 and related color algebras

    We present a special and attractive basis for the exceptional Lie algebra G2, which turns G2 into a Z23-graded Lie algebra. There are two basis elements for each degree of Z23\{(0,0,0)}, thus yielding 14 basis elements. We give a general and simple closed form expression for commutators between these basis elements. Next, we use this Z23-grading in order to examine graded color algebras. Our analysis yields three different Z23-graded color algebras of type G2. Since the Z23-grading is not compatible with a Cartan-Weyl basis of G2, we also study another grading of G2. This is a Z22-grading, compatible with a Cartan-Weyl basis, and for which we can also construct a Z22-graded color algebra of type G2

    A partitioned interface-tracking method for convective melting of constrained saturated solids

    This paper introduces a novel partitioned approach for simulating solid–liquid phase change, specifically applied to the convective melting of constrained saturated solids. This method uses separate solvers for the solid and liquid phases, achieving a coupled solution by exchanging variables at the interface, specifically heat flux and displacement at the interface. The interface displacement is determined by enforcing the Stefan condition at the cell faces on the interface. To update the solver grids, displacement at the face nodes is required, leading to the development of a conservative face-to-node interpolation technique. Additionally, the mass and heat added to the liquid domain during melting are compensated by source terms based on the swept volume of the cell faces at the interface. The partitioned approach is validated through two test cases: the one-phase Stefan problem and tin melting in a cavity with natural convection. The Stefan problem, a one-dimensional conduction-only problem with an analytical solution, shows nearly exact agreement with the numerical results. For the two-dimensional convection–diffusion melting problem, the approach demonstrates excellent agreement in terms of interface position, liquid fraction, heat flux, and velocities over time. The expected multi-cellular convection patterns were also achieved. However, minor discrepancies were noted in the merging times of the convection bubbles, primarily due to the liquid solver rather than the coupling algorithm

    From local histories to transcultural mnemonic landscapes : a conversation about translation and memory

    This chapter is structured as a dialogue between two scholars from different disciplines, each exploring the potential of concepts and methods from translation studies to shed light on the formation, circulation and reception of transnational memories, while also considering how insights from memory studies can highlight the multidirectional engagements and local embedding of memories originating from diverse contexts in cultural practices of translation. The interdisciplinary exchange prompts reflection on the specific formats and mechanisms through which memories 'travel' via translation across geographical, cultural and linguistic boundaries, as well as their subsequent 'instantiation' in particular locales, where they are reshaped through interactions with local repertoires, audiences, and agendas. Our focus is on how translation-as-transformation acts as a driving force behind the evolution and preservation of memory. This entails engaging with the ethical implications of translating local histories and narratives for global consumption. Through an analysis of various media forms—including testimony, literature, film, and museums—we examine how the dynamic interplay between interlingual and cultural translation unlocks the mnemonic potential of a given text or narrative. Approaching memory through a translational lens ultimately compels us to challenge conventional notions of authenticity, native language and stable originals, and to question the presumed unidirectionality of transfer processes

    Special care dentistry (undergraduate) education : essential as a starting point, yet insufficient to overcome barriers

    Introduction This study explored the role of special care dentistry (SCD) education in enhancing oral healthcare accessibility for people with disabilities and frail older adults. Materials and Methods An online questionnaire about SCD was distributed among dentists and dental hygienists in Flanders (Belgium) in December 2020 and January 2021. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed to compare the responses of these two professional groups. Among dentists, adjusted binary logistic regression analyses were performed to study the relationship between prior education on SCD and the willingness to engage in future SCD initiatives. Furthermore, an open-ended question requesting suggestions about SCD was analysed using the principles of thematic analysis. Results In total, 51 dental hygienists and 308 dentists responded. Both groups reported treating SCD patients, mostly between a few times a year and monthly. A higher proportion of dental hygienists received prior education on SCD and exhibited openness to future SCD initiatives than dentists. Responding dentists with prior education on SCD had higher estimated odds for the willingness to receive future education. Analysing the open-ended question, dentists attributed their lower willingness to factors beyond their control and emphasised the need for an established role for dental hygienists in SCD. Conclusion Most dental care providers deliver SCD infrequently. More than half of the dentists reported they never received SCD education. Dentists are less willing than dental hygienists to contribute to future SCD initiatives. To encourage dentists in future service provision, SCD educational initiatives could help, but must be supported by governmental actions and regulations

    Do athletes tolerate fraud for the benefit of the club? Applying the lens of unethical pro-organizational behavior

    Fraud in sport is a prevalent and harmful form of deviant behavior. Across two experimental studies with British and Belgian sport club members (N = 597), we examined aversion to four types of sport-related fraud (corruption, asset misappropriation, match-fixing, and identity fraud) through the lens of unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPOB). Participants evaluated scenarios where fraud either benefited their club (pro-club condition representing UPOB) or was self-serving (pro-self condition). Our results revealed consistently lower aversion toward pro-club fraud compared to pro-self fraud (Studies 1 & 2), regardless of individual morality or perceived club competitiveness (Study 2). Fraud aversion correlated positively with moral identity and negatively with perceived club competitiveness, and these relationships were consistent across conditions. Our findings highlight that aversion to fraud significantly differs based on its perceived beneficiary. This perception discrepancy underscores the need for sport organizations to address the potential normalization of fraud resulting from UPOB

    Conservative decision-making with sets of probabilities : how to infer new choices from previous ones

    We study a generalized version of maximizing expected utility, called E-admissibility, to make decisions when the decision-maker's uncertainty is described by a set of probability mass functions. In particular, instead of specifying this set directly, we assume that we only have partial information about the decision-maker's preferences or choices, in the form of which options she rejects from some finite sets of options. We describe both the decision-making process and the available information using choice functions, and we provide an algorithm, based on linear programming, to compute the most conservative extension of a given choice assessment to a choice function that makes decisions based on E-admissibility. Next, we relate this E-admissible extension to the so-called coherent extension and show how the same techniques that are used to simplify the computation of this coherent extension can also be used to simplify that of the E-admissible one. In our experiments, we demonstrate that decision-making with the E-admissible extension is faster and more informative than with the coherent one, but also observe that the required computations are challenging once the parameters of the problem scale

    A critique on transductive evaluation for GNN node classification

    Transductive learning and inductive learning are two standard paradigms widely used in deep learning for graph data. Transductive learning focuses on inference on seen data by incorporating features of the complete dataset into the training phase, while inductive learning infers on unseen instances and has the capability of generalization. The differences in learning goals require distinct data partitioning approaches, where the data is typically divided into training and test sets. Unlike tabular data, the division of graph data is constrained by its internal topology, making it difficult to obtain a clear-cut test set when considering only a single graph. As a result, most research adopts a transductive setting for graph learning and applies a masking strategy during training, which masks labels but allows the use of graph attributes, including those related to the masked entities. We argue that transductive learning and evaluation in Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) tasks, particularly for node classification, suppresses the potential of GNNs to generalize. As an alternative, we propose a data splitting approach for inductive learning to train and evaluate GNN performance for graph datasets consisting of a single graph. We demonstrate the feasibility of inductive evaluation for both training and inference on unseen data within a complete graph by means of an experiment on well-known benchmark graph datasets
