Van Pong tot Playstation: De geschiedenis van computerspellen

    No full text
A few years ago computer games became an academic field of media research and theory. Since then historians have been working on a thorough history of gaming. This article tracks computer gaming from its earliest conception through its highs, such as the 'Golden Age', and its lows, such as the financial crash that followed the Golden Age. It aims to create a clearer picture of the biggest platforms and companies in the industry and the technological breakthroughs that were accomplished. Although most of this history centres on technology, some important games and developers are also reviewed. The article concludes with a view of the future of both the industry and academic game research

Terugblikken: De Nederlandse non-fictiefilms van rond de eeuwwisseling (I)

    No full text
In addition to the well-known and well-restored early biographical Dutch films, Ivo Blom researches another series of early 'views' of the Netherlands, hitherto hardly researched by Dutch historians. These films include street shots of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and recordings of media events involving Queen Wilhelmina and Paul Kruger. Blom cobmines an analysis of the visual material with research into the historical context of the production and reception, and as result identifies the films to be productions by Anton Nöggerath Sr. He then traces the afterlife of these films to the Netherlands Centraal Filmarchief (Central Dutch Film archives), a private initiative that was set up in the 1920s, and which was a forerunner to the Filmmuseum and Beeld en Geluid (Sound and Vision). (Part II follows in TMG 2011-1)

    Mediatheorie van het e-book

    No full text
Departing from Marshal McLuhan’s analysis of the impact of print books on the mental and social environment of readers, Arjen Mulder reflects on the possible mental and social effects of the e-book as a new medium. The e-book, as carrier of an immaterial text, allows the reader to change its lay-out, font and other design elements. Additionally, e-books contain not just one single novel but an entire library and even contain an online bookstore. Another prominent effect of e-books is that they cause discrepancies between the actual reading experience and the user experience of the medium. Mulder also analyses some of the disadvantages of this new medium due to its technical properties. These concern for instance the integrity of the text, the unreliability of the technology, or the fact that providers can without any permission reinitialise your e-reader and therewith delete your entire e-book library. Mulder concludes with a discussion of the different reading modes available to readers to read print and electronic texts

A State Cinematographic Practice in Wartime: The Belgian Army Film Unit 1916-1922

    No full text
Mass media widely disseminated iconographic representations of the war. In this profusion of images, the behaviour of state authorities changed, while they had previously looked down on these two types of media. The alleged power of images led belligerents to take control of war pictures which circulated in newspapers or in newsreels. Both the reputation of the Army, and, behind it, that of the Nation, were at stake. At the beginning of the war the image of Poor Little Belgium was an effective symbol that was largely fuelled by Allied propaganda and one-off Belgian initiatives. Nevertheless, when the Belgian Army was mentioned in Allied propaganda, the soldiers looked pitiful and exhausted. Because it was growing increasingly worried of this feeble image, the Belgian government decided in 1916 to change course and to coordinate its propaganda efforts to propagate a favourable portrayal of Belgium as a tenacious belligerent nation and equally worthy ally. The Belgian Army Film Unit, established in 1916, was part of this development. Her task was to shoot images of the Belgian Army in action and of its soldiers under the leadership of their commander-in-chief, King Albert and his wife Queen Elisabeth. A state cinematographic practice developed for the first time in Belgium, in the form of a rigorously controlled military film production. This article aims sketching a first approach to this Belgian Army Film Unit and to its filmic sources. The goal is to understand why the Belgian War Department gradually established an Army film unit and how it used its filmic production to write its own history at the Yser front

'Plaidoyer pour le graphiste' Arts et métiers graphiques and the French Typographer as an Artist and Craftsman

    No full text
This article studies the conception of the typographer in the French graphic design magazine Arts et métiers graphiques, published in the interwar period. For the magazine’s editors, the designer was both an artist and a trained craftsman who was dedicated enough to face the particular challenges posed by typography. Moreover, the fruit of his work merited legal protection through copyrights. All of this points to a conception of the designer as a self-determined individual with a particular style. This view may be typical of the French conception of modern typography in that period. It is one that stands in contrast to the logic of often anonymous, collective design propagated in the New Typography of the Central-European avant-gardes. Moreover, in addition to individual creative endeavours, the French conception favoured a design practice that reconciled innovation and tradition, and artistry and craftsmanship

    No full text
This essay discusses the proposed design for informational objects for the place branding of the Food Innovation Strip Ede-Wageningen. The Food Innovation Strip Ede-Wageningen is the knowledge center of the FoodValley Region, one of the regions taking part in the top sectors policy, developed in 2011 by the Dutch government. The branding aims to convincingly convey that this region holds many companies, organizations and knowledge institutes working together towards sustainable innovations for the Agri-food sector within the framework of healthier food and a healthier living environment. This essay offers an inside view, from concept development to prototype, of the research behind the spatial and typographical design for the informational objects for the Food Innovation Strip. Although Agri-food is the primary focus for the design, the research is also based on information about typography and how typography is implemented in related fields such as illustration, spatial design and design in the context of new media

Measuring Transnationalism: Comparing TV Formats using Digital Tools

    No full text
This article elucidates a typology for cross-culturally comparing different versions of television formats. Digital tools are used to derive quantitative data based on temporal parameters of episode or genre of the narrative structure, content, and sequencing. Type one, which we also call “transposed narratives,” retains the narrative structure and sequencing while extending and expanding the narrative structure to readjust to longer broadcast times. Type two, which we call ‘transmutated narratives,’ re-distributes and re-organizes the narrative structure and sequencing to adjust to both extended broadcast time and other culturally relevant proximity issues. Type three adaptations display genre structure similarities while narrative structure, sequencing and content diverge. These we call ‘derived narratives.

    De Nederlandse documentaire film 1920-1940

    Get PDF
