No full textThis paper aims at briefly explaining graphic journalism and distinguishing it from comics journalism, as well as approaching graphic journalism via looking at the concept of interactivity. The second part discusses the case studies of The Nisoor Square Shooting (2010) and Ferguson Firsthand (2015) created by Dan Archer. It analyses and interprets how the two pieces of graphic journalism create new ways of storytelling, what their innovative elements are, to what extent interactivity occurs and which functions it fulfils
TrendMonitor Audiovisuele Collecties in Nederland
Get PDFHet audiovisueel archief in Nederland is volop in beweging. Individuele instellingen ontvangen en verzamelen steeds meer audiovisuele producties, ontwikkelen steeds professioneler informatiebeleid en koppelen hun collecties, kennis en voorzieningen aan een groter netwerk. Er bestaat vanuit deze ontwikkeling een toenemende behoefte aan inzicht in de trends in het beheer, het behoud en de beschikbaarstelling van de analoge en digitale audiovisuele collecties. Vorig jaar is Beeld en Geluid daarom gestart met de “TrendMonitor Audiovisuele Collecties in Nederland”, een terugkerend onderzoek binnen de “sector” naar de trends en ontwikkelingen op het gebied van digitalisering en conservering, beleidsprioriteiten, kennisbehoeften, beschikbare voorzieningen, budgetten, uitdagingen en knelpunten.
De uitkomsten van de TrendMonitor zijn richtinggevend voor de agenda van AVA_Net, het netwerk van audiovisuele collectiehouders in Nederland dat wordt ondersteund door Beeld en Geluid. Voor de korte termijn hopen wij dat de Trendrapportages zullen bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van een actieplan voor het veiligstellen van informatie op analoge dragers. Voor de lange termijn is de TrendMonitor een essentieel onderdeel voor de invulling van Nationale Strategie Digitaal Erfgoed en de positie van de audiovisuele collecties daarbinnen

No full textEen themanummer over typografie lijkt opmerkelijk voor een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift voor mediageschiedenis. Immers, zo kun je je afvragen, behoort de studie van typografie niet tot de kunst- of designgeschiedenis of de studie van het boek? Wie de reguliere nummers van het Tijdschrift voor Mediageschiedenis / Journal for Media History doorbladert ziet dat de meeste artikelen gaan over de traditionele media als film, televisie, de geschreven pers, of fotografie. Themanummers behandelen een scala aan zulke uiteenlopende onderwerpen als de monarchie, schandalen of de representatie van de natuur. In elk geval biedt een themanummer de uitdaging om de grenzen (van onderzoek of aandachtsvelden) op te zoeken. Typefaces for Children's Reading
No full textThis article deals with the contrasting views of designers, educationalists and scientific legibility researchers concerning children’s typefaces. Guidelines about typefaces and their legibility for beginner readers remain inconclusive due to these different perspectives. The article first discusses the opinions of each of these parties on children’s typefaces. Educationalists’ views are often based on prejudices and forces of habit. Designers tend to follow the views of their potential clients and scientific legibility researchers often lack typographical knowledge for creating valid test material. To conclude, a new perspective on a need for collaboration between the different parties within typographic design research is suggested. This approach might be able not only to acquire a deeper understanding and explanation of the question which typefaces are best for children, but also for the development and design of concrete new, functional typefaces and/or guidelines
Historical Type in the Collection of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp from a Metal Conservator's Point of View
No full textFrom the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, hand presses and movable type were used for book printing. The knowledge of historical lead-based types, from a material point of view, is relatively scarce. The conservation of type in the Museum Plantin-Moretus (Antwerp) drew attention to the corrosive behavior of some types. To investigate the relation between the type compositions and the environment, contemporary literature on type alloying and casting was compared with analytical research on a selection of historical type. As a conclusion, lead alloy compositions with high concentrations of antimony and low tin levels were the most subjected to corrosion and are to be preserved in appropriate conditions

Evaluating unsupervised thesaurus-based labeling of audiovisual content in an archive production environment
Get PDFIn this paper we report on a two-stage evaluation of unsupervised labeling of audiovisual content using collateral text data sources to investigate how such an approach can provide acceptable results for given requirements with respect to archival quality, authority and service levels to external users. We conclude that with parameter settings that are optimized using a rigorous evaluation of precision and accuracy, the quality of automatic term-suggestion is sufficiently high. We furthermore provide an analysis of the term extraction after being taken into production, where we focus on performance variation with respect to term types and
television programs. Having implemented the procedure in our production work-flow allows us to gradually develop the system further and to also assess the effect of the transformation from manual to automatic annotation from an end-user perspective. Additional future work will be on deploying different information sources including annotations based on multimodal video analysis such as speaker recognition and

Critically Acclaimed and Cancelled: FX's The Bridge, Channel as Brand and the Adaptation of Scripted TV Formats
No full textThis article uses The Bridge (FX, 2013–2014), an adaptation of the Danish-Swedish series Broen/Bron (SVT1/DR1, 2011-), to explore the ways in which the brand identities of channels shape the adaptation process for scripted television formats. By situating The Bridge in the broader context of FX’s effort to maintain a coherent brand identity, the author argues that producers were not attempting to repurpose Broen/Bron’s narrative for the American audience. Rather, the network wanted to provide its traditionally young and masculine audience with another ‘muscular’ crime series while appealing to additional demographics in the hopes of expanding the channel’s overall viewership
