Meinhof, Shigenobu, Kennedy: Revolution and Assassination in 1968
No full textThis article reflects on audiovisual representations of the events of 1968 and its aftermath in three national contexts through two archive-driven historical documentaries I have produced exploring this period: RFK Must Die (2008) and Children of the Revolution (2010). RFK Must Die investigates the assassination of Bobby Kennedy through both witness testimony and the hours of network footage available from the crime scene. Children of the Revolution charts the audiovisual historiographies of two female revolutionaries from the 1968 student movements in Germany and Japan to become leaders of the Baader Meinhof Group and the Japanese Red Army. Both women were journalists who used film to fight a propaganda battle against state broadcasters, through collaborations with independent filmmakers or demanding screen time through the television commissioning process. By choosing to frame their stories ‘through the eyes of their daughters,’ who are also journalists, the making of the film became a struggle for editorial control with key contributors and a round of complex negotiations to secure access to archive materials on such a highly-politicized and hotly-contested subject

Zowel de materie als de methoden om ons digitale verleden op te graven en te
reconstrueren zijn piepjong en nog volop in ontwikkeling. In dit handboek geven wij
een eerste aanzet tot een beschrijving van webarcheologie. We gaan aan de slag, bit
voor bit, byte voor byte. We laten niet alleen zien hoe we met digitale archeologie een
digitale omgeving proberen op te graven uit het verleden, maar we laten ook zien hoe
we onze archeologische vondsten veiligstellen en duurzaam proberen te bewaren voor
toekomstige generaties

No full text‘Gand a fini par faire comme les autres.’ The rise of the café-concert and variety theatre in late nineteenth-century Ghent’s ‘society of the spectacle’Cafés-concerts and variety theatre have generally received only a cursory mention within the vast literature on the late nineteenth-century culture of spectacle in Europe’s major cities. This article uses Ghent as a case study to demonstrate that even in provincial towns, there was an abundance of spectacle available to the public during this era. Cafés-concerts and variety theatre played a particularly significant role and were closely interwoven with the spectacular urban renewal that took place in Ghent during the late nineteenth century. In addition, these forms of entertainment carried the seeds of the type of mass spectacle that would emerge in the twentieth century. Why, then, have the café-concert and variety theatre gone unexplored by academics for so long? In an attempt to answer this question, this article offers a means for identifying these two specific forms of spectacle in major urban centres and provincial towns in Belgium and abroad, thereby enabling a more thorough exploration of the phenomenon based on a wide range of sources. This, in turn, will allow the café-concert and variety theatre to emerge from obscurity and take their rightful place in the debate on the modern ‘society of the spectacle’
Journalistiek oriëntalisme. C.K. Elout en de transformatie van de koloniale verslaggeving in Nederland 1920–1930
No full textIn the interwar period, the leading Dutch journalist C.K. Elout conducted two research trips to the Dutch East Indies for the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad. This article studies Elout’s letters from his travels in the context of the growing journalistic interest in the Netherlands in colonial matters in the 1920s. The reason for this interest was the increase in information transferred between the Netherlands and South-east Asia as a result of new technologies and rising tensions in the Indies due to the emergence of the anticolonial movement. Through his letters, Elout intended to stimulate colonial reporting in the Netherlands, with the goal of strengthening overseas ties. Therefore, this corpus of texts can be seen as a form of journalistic orientalism in which the author extensively reflects on the differences between the West and the East. This article focuses on these reflections and demonstrates how they influenced Elout’s later commentary on the news from the Dutch East Indies

No full textBetween Science and Spectacle: Hypnosis on the Belgian Theatre Scene, 1875–1900This article focuses on the performances of itinerant magnetiser/hypnotist Donato and on the public debate he generated on his travels throughout Europe. Around this time, magnetism was increasingly being presented in a new form – hypnotism – which walked the line between scientific experiment and public spectacle, navigating the realms of alternative medicine and of recognised medical therapies. This article explores Donato’s use of the trappings of science in his shows, his relationships with the medical and scientific communities, and the ban on public demonstrations of hypnotism that was introduced in Belgium in 1892. While the Belgian law revealed just how unequal the battle between magnetisers and physicians really was, it did not result in a decisive victory for the medical community, nor did it spell an end to hypnosis shows. However, it did herald the end of a brief period of intense exchange between magnetisers and academics
