The Role of Commercial Radio Stations in the Media Vacuum of Mai 68 in Paris
Commercial radio stations RTL and Europe n°1 played an important role during the events of May 1968 in Paris by maintaining the news coverage of the protests, the riots and the strikes. By analyzing the entanglements of the various audiovisual media and surviving audio material, this article defends the idea that a vacuum created by the crisis that affected the French public broadcasting agency is one of the main reasons that brought the commercial radio stations at the centre of the events
“The Growing Practice of Calling in Continental Film Groups”: The European Influence on Production of Early British TV Advertising
While the development of commercial television advertising in Britain is often framed in the context of the American model, this paper will argue that London advertising agencies looked across the Channel to French and Dutch production companies and personnel, particularly in the first five years of commercial television, from 1955-1960. Using case studies, this paper will illustrate the involvement of these Continental companies and personnel on the production of advertising films for British commercial television, and identify the reasons why they were replaced by their British counterparts from the early 60s
A Slippery Slope: The Rise and Fall of the Domestic Soap Opera in Italian Public and Commercial Television
Prior to the mid-nineties, Italian television did not produce any soap operas. Daytime serials were imported mainly from the USA.Unexpectedly, the most commercial television genre was produced for the first time by the public service broadcaster: Un posto al sole was aired by RAI in 1996. The commercial competitor Mediaset immediately responded with Vivere in 1998 and CentoVetrine in 2001. Un posto al sole still airs today, while both Mediaset’s soaps were cancelled. The paper focuses on the rise and fall of domestic long-running daytime serials, on the different choices taken by the two competitors and on the perspectives opened up by the genre on Italian TV schedules
TV Commercials' Second Life: Commercials as Remembrance Culture in the Netherlands
The objective of this article is to look at the cultural indicators of television in the Netherlands from the perspective of feature that is essential to commercial TV - audiovisual advertisements.TV advertisements have been continuously gaining recognition as vital part of shared, cultural memory amongst audiences. It is therefore worth looking into the current practices of archiving and reuse of these ephemeral texts, including the digital environment. Once any commercial is removed from its original context of the broadcast TV flow and of its commercial layer, to be then placed in the archival setting – its meaning becomes radically altered. Consequently, the question is - what is left of a commercial and what becomes a cultural memory, often embedded deeply in collective psyche of generations of broadcast viewers, in the archival environment
Let's Play Game Exhibitions: A Curators' Perspective
The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision is home to The Experience, a museum
exhibiting the history of media in the Netherlands. For ten months in 2016 and 2017,
The Experience hosted a temporary exhibition entitled Let’s YouTube. During the Let’s
YouTube game month, we programmed a ten-day exhibition with a focus on video
games as Dutch cultural heritage. The games were selected along two axes: popularity
in the Netherlands, and made in the Netherlands. To connect this exhibition to the
YouTube theme, we used Let’s Play videos as a contemporary phenomenon to engage
younger visitors with “old” and often obscure games. For the Let’s Play installation, we
selected games from our archives, produced in the Netherlands, and to which we had
made agreements with the makers about the rights for online distribution. Over ten
days, approximately 5,100 people visited the exhibition, mostly families with children,
the museum’s target demographic

Selectiematrix voor computergames
Beeld en Geluid verzamelt sinds 2015 games, maar wat willen we dan precies hebben? In welke
games zijn we geïnteresseerd? Welk verhaal vertellen deze games? En hoeveel games willen we in
onze collectie opnemen? Beeld en Geluid gebruikt selectiematrices om het selectiebeleid voor
verschillende collectiegebieden concreet vorm te geven. Deze dynamische documenten veranderen

Images of the Past. 7 years of Images for the Future
Over a period of seven years Sound and Vision, EYE Film Institute, the National Archives and Kennisland
preserved over 90,000 hours of video, 20,000 hours of film, some 100,000 hours of audio and 2,500,000 photos. The digitised material is now being reused for numerous purposes, from lesson material and Wikipedia to apps and services for the creative industry. Images for the Future has played a pioneering role in both the development of large-scale digitisation processes and the thinking on the role of heritage organisations
in our digital society
The Winding Road on the Media Landscape: The Establishment of Estonian (Television) Broadcasting between 1992 and 2016
This article explores how Estonian broadcasting (with a focus on television) tackled the challenges of transforming from a monopolistic party propaganda machine into a modern dual media system in which public service broadcasting and newly created private enterprises coexist, and how this process evolved in a small, post-Communist country. This article argues that the Estonian government’s ‘idealisation’ of market forces supported by the European Union media policy, which is driven by common market ideology, did not account for the market’s limitations and media companies’ actual capabilities to provide a large range of media services. The research methodology is based on an analysis of Estonian media legislation and the broadcasters’ annual reports from the period 1992–2016. The article analyses the key connections between the financial conditions of the broadcasting industry and the adaptations made in broadcasting legislation in Estonia during the last 25 years
Digital Humanities and Media History: A Challenge for Historical Newspaper Research1
Digital humanities is an important challenge for more traditional humanities disciplines to take on, but advanced digital methods for analysis are not often used to answer concrete research questions in these disciplines. This article makes use of extensive digital collections of historical newspapers to discuss the promising, yet challenging relationship between digital humanities and historical research. The search for long-term patterns in digital historical research appropriately positions itself within previous approaches to historical research, but the digitization of sources presents many practical and theoretical questions and obstacles. For this reason, any digital source used in historical research should be critically reviewed beforehand. Digital newspaper research raises new issues and presents new possibilities to better answer traditional questions
