Henri Grünkorn: A History of Fairground Spectacle Prior to the ‘Electrische Kinematograaf’This article historicises early film experiences by examining them within the context of the late nineteenth-century culture of spectacle. The work of fairground showman Henri Grünkorn in the period from 1888–1898 serves as a case study, illustrating how the emerging medium of film wove together a number of elements from the culture of spectacle: mechanical movement, vision and observation, and reality as spectacle. Using the conceptual framework established by Anne Friedberg, Grünkorn’s fairground attractions (a rollercoaster, a mechanical diorama, tableaux vivants, and ultimately the ‘electrical cinématographe’) are revealed as variations on the mobilised gaze and virtual mobility

    No full text
In modern society, television is one of the most important media for presenting the past. This article focuses on the poetics of history on television broadcasts in relation to the manner in which these broadcasts present our past as well as our collective memory. This study rebuts criticism of television as a medium for historical accounts by demonstrating how professionals in the field actively display an extensive knowledge and understanding of the past, provide frameworks for the contextualization of audiovisual materials and depth, and apply and operate specific functions of different representation tools in their productions. To gain insight into the way television producers interact with history, this study combines qualitative textual analysis of the broadcasts and an approach from the field of production studies: diverse in-depth interviews and analysis of internal documents. The case study chosen for this research was Andere Tijden, a history program based on archive material and produced by NTR (formerly known as NPS) and VPRO for the Dutch Broadcast Foundation, from 2000 onwards. The case study demonstrates how television producers’ mediation of history is an important practice in the search for history and memories and the conservation and presentation thereof. The analysis reveals the possibility of more cohesive poetics with regard to history on broadcast television and offers insight into the objectives, strategies and conventions of television producers. Special attention is paid to the more implicit practices of selection and interpretation of material by television producers as curators of the past. These implicit practices are made explicit on a cultural-historical, institutional and textual level

Who owns the broadcasting archives? Unravelling copyright ownership of broadcast content

    Get PDF
Archives across the Netherlands are tasked to make their archives accessible online. However, progress has been slow, not least because it is difficult to determine who owns the rights to make works available online. Focusing on the Dutch public service radio and TV broadcasting sectors, this book adresses this challenge. First, it disentangles the nature of broadcasts by providing guidance on which aspects of a TV or radio broadcast can attract protection and who owns these. Secondly, it empirically establishes that the default ownership rules can only provide an incomplete picture of the rights ownership in the public service broadcasting sector: the ownership is more concentrated than copyright and neighbouring rights law suggests. Who owns the broadcasting archives? shows how different legal scenarios explain this rights concentration and establishes their likely practical influence on industry practice in the public service broadcasting sector across time

FREEZE!

The Dynamics of Celluloid on the Road to Independence: Unilever and Shell in Nigeria

    Get PDF
This research looks at the films from two companies both dealing with oil, one petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell, the other vegetable, Unilever’s subsidiary UAC, just before and after the Nigerian independence. Concentrating on films (that also deal with products other than oil) from this period enables us to consider a set of representations that reflect the ideas of the company on a local and international scale as films were used to promote their reputation and legitimise their work. Modernity, scientific innovation, and technology were often used in terms of visual aesthetics, shaping a collective imagination of the industry, the country in which it resided and the people who were its employees. By researching these films we can develop a better understanding of branding strategies, especially within a (post) colonial setting, give new insights into global and local market perspectives, create a new view on the transnational dynamics of a modern media, and deepen our awareness of non-fiction industrial film. As films communicate a brand identity and its accompanying values to consumers and audiences, researching their multiple forms and uses from a historical and cross-cultural perspective, as well as from a corporate viewpoint, deepens our understanding of the important international, national and local circulation and influence of multimedia practices

    Get PDF
