    Variation in perceived motivational climate in sports among young football players: a case study during a tournament preparation

    The athletes’ perceptions of their coaches' behaviour significantly contribute to the perception of motivational climate. This study aims to analyse the consequences of different types of coaching orientation on young football players, considering the perceived motivational climate in sports. Twenty-two football players aged 13-14 years completed the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2 prior to the first practice in preparation for a tournament, and before the last game. The coach promoted a mastery approach to the under-13 team (n=12), and a performance approach to the under-14 team (n=10). Kruskal-Wallis Test showed no statistical differences pre-intervention. Post-intervention showed differences for Cooperation (p<0.05, higher for under-13), and Inequality (p<0.05, higher for under-14). The factorial analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in the various categories at the two data collection time points. The results demonstrate that the motivational climate perceived by players is directly influenced by the coach's attitudes and behaviours, with different training strategies inculcating different perceptions among players. Player’s perception of coaches providing positive and encouraging feedback after success or failure in performance, as well as not ignoring errors, supporting players, and providing ample guidance, was associated with a task-oriented climate. In contrast, players who perceive their coach to give less positive feedback but a high amount of punishment feedback, punish excessively, and provide little support, were associated with an ego-oriented climate

    Improving marking effectiveness and feedback provision in an OSCE assessment using Microsoft Forms: A pilot study in Sport and Exercise Therapy

    An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) has been recognised as a reliable but workload-intensive assessment method across health sciences studies. Though a variety of digital marking tools have been employed to improve marking and feedback provision for OSCEs, many of these require specialist software or maintenance. This pilot study examines the development and trialling of Microsoft Forms as a marking and feedback instrument for an OSCE within a Sport and Exercise Therapy module. This study aims to assess whether the use of a non-specialist digital tool, such as Microsoft Forms, might be able overcome limitations in current assessment procedures and ultimately provide a more effective method for marking and feedback provision for an OSCE. Results from OSCE examiners (N = 8) and students (N = 30) who participated in the pilot indicate that Microsoft Forms does have the potential to provide a more effective experience for examiners and ultimately improve upon feedback provision for students when compared with a paper-based marking tool. However, concerns around the form’s ease-of-use may ultimately influence its adoption as a marking instrument above current paper-based methods

    Factors influencing the adoption of agile project management methodologies by engineering teams in the telecommunications industry

    This study explores the dynamic landscape of Sri Lanka’s telecommunications industry, specifically examining the correlation between engineering teams and the adoption of agile project management methodologies. With the industry’s shift towards virtual content, cloud computing, and software-driven systems, it is essential to examine the factors that impact the adoption of agile practices. Through a comprehensive literature analysis, this study identifies and analyzes ten key factors that significantly influence the integration of agile methodologies within engineering teams. Afterwards by obtaining the expert opinions, research conducts a comprehensive data analysis by identifying four key factors: organizational culture, adaptability, communication, problem-solving, and employee engagement. The study surveyed 145 telecommunication engineering teams, incorporating vital demographic characteristics to enhance the validity of its findings. Key insights reveal the critical role of organizational culture in driving agile implementation, with effective problem-solving practices contributing positively. Surprisingly, superior communication exhibits limited direct impact. Interestingly, the moderation effect of employee engagement on the relationship between organizational culture and agile adoption is negative. In contrast, employee engagement significantly influences the relationship between effective problem-solving practices and agile adoption. The study concludes with practical recommendations for creating an agile-friendly environment, investing in adaptability training, enhancing communication tools, and cultivating effective problem-solving practices. These insights aim to guide the telecommunications industry in Sri Lanka towards agile practices, fostering increased productivity, improved quality, and accelerated time-to-market

    Clarifying supply chain disruption and operational resilience relationship from a threat-rigidity perspective: Evidence from small and medium-sized enterprises

    Given the significant risk supply chain disruptions pose to businesses, scholars and experts presume such events encourage resilience-building efforts. This study uses the threat-rigidity theory to question this normative assumption by proposing that supply chain disruption can trigger threat interpretation bias, which undermines operational resilience. Specifically, the study contends that threat interpretation bias negatively mediates the relationship between supply chain disruption and operational resilience, particularly in low disruption orientation circumstances. An empirical analysis of survey data from 259 small and medium-sized enterprises in Ghana using covariance-based structural equation modeling supports these theoretical predictions. The results indicate that supply chain disruption increases threat interpretation bias, which in turn reduces operational resilience. The negative effect of threat interpretation bias on operational resilience is stronger when disruption orientation is low than when it is high. These results offer an enhanced understanding of the supply chain disruption–resilience link while shedding light on how firms can manage threat interpretation bias to improve operational resilience

    Experimental and CFD analysis based design of additively manufactured drum gate for open channel flow experiments

    Additive Manufacturing (AM) is emerging as a cost-effective alternative to conventional manufacturing techniques for applications requiring components with complex geometries. Cost savings are achieved through reduced raw material usage, shorter manufacturing times, and the elimination of expensive tooling. AM serves as a valuable tool for designing and developing complex shapes in fluid flow research. This study examines the limitations of existing components in a 2.5 m open channel fluid flow experiment, characterized by their basic standard shapes. Specifically, it focuses on enhancing flow control in hydraulic systems by introducing gates with intricate geometries, which are typically expensive and time consuming to acquire from equipment suppliers. AM technology provides a cost-effective solution for implementing progressive design modifications. This paper presents a comparative analysis of various positions of an AM-produced curved drum gate in terms of flow rate, fluid velocity profile, water level height, and related fluid flow parameters. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, analysis, and simulation techniques are used to analyse and validate the results. Based on the experimental findings and their verification, this paper discusses the suitability and applicability of AM techniques in fluid flow analysis. The ability to manufacture customized components through AM offers a promising avenue for enhancing fluid flow research, enabling cost-effective and time-efficient design modifications.     Mainstreaming the music festival experience: From long-haired capitalism to private equity

    In this presentation I will discuss the business and the culture of outdoor rock and pop music festivals with a focus on the British experience. Tracing a history from their countercultural origins in the late 1960s to the mainstream events of the present-day, I demonstrate the changing nature of music festivals and the consistencies and connections they retain with the past. I also note the importance of the rock heritage market to the development of the sector, and to the growing importance of private equity companies. A number of key market trends are then identified before concluding with a revisited version of Pine and Gilmore’s classic notion of the experience economy as adapted to the contemporary festival market

    Leadership as a situated practice: Critical connections and liberated networks

    Learning Development is founded on multidisciplinary partnerships and collaboration, which can make it difficult for practitioners to recognise leadership in themselves and have it recognised by others, stymieing progression and confidence. This study aims to explore what leadership looks like in a collaborative, community-driven, third space field of practice, and how Learning Development practitioners might recognise leadership in themselves and enact it in practice. Based on based on semi-structured interviews, a phenomenological approach is taken to explore the perceptions and experiences of 20 participants who self-identify as Learning Developers with an interest in leadership. Four key themes emerged from the analysis: Being in the role; Being part of a team; Being part of a community; and Taking a wider view. Each indicates how leadership in Learning Development is values-driven, social, networked, critical, and operates on the three levels of team, community, and field. The interrelationships between these are expressed as a model for strategic influence driven by collaborative connections, and findings suggest that practitioners act as a hub through which knowledge and connections can flow. Given the challenges currently facing the higher education sector, it is vital that institutions are able to harness these crucial roles to remain flexible, responsive, and effective. This study provides a means for recognition and advancement in fields that lack the clear progression routes of academic and professional services colleagues
