Staff-student co-creation in a matrix environment
The Solent Student Partnership Project is a cross-institutional co-creation scheme hosted by the Education Office at Solent University. This chapter discusses how and why, over a three-year period, the project has moved from being hierarchically managed to being operationalised through a matrix environment. The chapter starts by outlining the evolution of the co-creation initiative in our context. It then shares our mixed experiences of moving our project into a matrix environment via three themes of contradiction: (1) losing sight and gaining visibility, (2) cohesive and conflicting identities, and (3) ground moving and groundbreaking. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the lessons learned and proposes some possible ways forward for staff-student co-creation in a matrix environment
Does unilateral high-load resistance training influence strength change in the contralateral arm also undergoing high-load training?
Training one limb with a high-load has been shown to augment strength changes in the opposite limb training with a low-load (via cross-education of strength), indicating that within-subject models can be problematic when investigating strength changes. This study examined if the cross-education of strength from unilateral high-load training could augment the strength changes in the opposite arm undergoing the same unilateral high-load training. 160 participants were randomized to one of four groups: (1) training on the dominant arm followed by the non-dominant arm (D?+?ND), (2) training on the dominant arm only (D-Only), (3) training on the non-dominant arm only (ND-Only), and (4) a non-exercise control. All exercise groups performed 18 sessions of unilateral high-load elbow flexion exercise over 6?weeks. Participants were compared for changes in 1RM strength and muscle thickness. Changes in strength of the non-dominant arm were greater in D?+?ND (2.7?kg) and ND-Only (2.6?kg) compared to D-Only (1.5?kg) and control (?0.2?kg), while the changes were greater in D-Only compared to control. The same finding was observed in the dominant arm. Only the arms being directly trained observed increases in muscle thickness. Unilateral high-load resistance training increased strength in the opposite untrained arm, without changes in muscle thickness. This cross-education of strength did not augment the strength changes in the contralateral arm undergoing the same unilateral high-load training. However, it does not necessarily indicate that within-subject models are methodologically sound to investigate strength change if both limbs are trained with a high-load
Developing the AMPHORA policy guidelines for heritage projects as mental health interventions: a Delphi consultation
Engaging with heritage to support mental health and wellbeing has become a focus of research and policy, more recently moving towards social prescription of heritage interventions. While there are benefits to active participation, there are potential risks to those taking part and to the non-renewable historic remains and landscape that form the core of these projects. The purpose of the current research was to develop best practice guidelines for organisations offering heritage projects as interventions for people who live with mental health issues to protect both participants and heritage. There were two research phases; a Sandpit with World Café discussions to produce a set of research priorities, and a Delphi Consultation, employing three questionnaires distributed over six months, to develop best practice guidelines. The panel in both phases comprised experts through lived experience, policy, practice, and research. The AMPHORA guidelines cover three stages: Project Development, Project Delivery, and Project Follow up, with a set of action points for each stage. Of particular importance was authentic participation and expertise to ensure appropriate management of heritage/ historic environment assets and support for participants. The AMPHORA guidelines can assist all organisations in the delivery of safe projects that support the mental health of those involved, as well as enhancing and protecting the historic environment. These are the first research-led guidelines that help heritage organisations support those living with mental health issues
Co-creating value in entrepreneurship: an exploratory study of Lebanese women
This study aims to amplify theory and practice at the marketing/entrepreneurship interface (MEI) by proposing a revision to the key concept of value creation. Advances in marketing research suggest that value is co-created by means of multiple actors, who integrate their resources within ecosystems. This study, therefore, investigates value co-creation from a MEI perspective. The study is based in Lebanon, a country encountering turbulence and disruption, providing a MENA context. In recognition of local conditions, the methodology is contextually congruent, using socially mediated interviews and panel discussions. Analysis of these data uncovers emergent practices of VCC that are captured in two dimensions of adaptive marketing and online interactions that take place within a digitally enabled but imbalanced entrepreneurial ecosystem. The study offers a revision to theory at the MEI by extending value creation to value co-creation and by showing how value cocreation may be adapted and reconfigured according to local circumstances
The sport and exercise experiences of physically disabled women in Iran: shame, stereotyping, and Goffman’s Stigma
To date, there is a scarcity of research in Iran exploring disabled women’s sport and exercise experiences. However, it is evident that widespread challenges exist for disabled people to participate in daily life on an equal basis to their non-disabled counterparts. Using sixteen interviews, our research aimed to explore the intersecting identities of disability and gender in Iranian women’s sport and exercise participation, using Goffman’s theory of stigma and the social model of disability. Our findings suggest numerous environmental barriers to participation. As traditional gender beliefs still prevail in Iran, this often created a ‘double disadvantage’ for women. Both enacted and affiliate stigma were highlighted by interviewees, with negative perceptions around disability internalised, resulting in self-exclusion from sport and exercise spaces and disempowering elements to their participation. This research adds to the literature on sport/exercise and disability, focusing on Iranian women’s voices which are largely absent from the current literature
Negotiating with technology: advancing the virtual in qualitative research methods
Purpose:This study aims to describe key elements that are critical to virtual qualitative research especially whileworking with practitioners as participants.Study approach:This paper takes a reflexive researcher approach using a case study to explore how researchers adopteda qualitative research approach using digital technology. We use five principles suggested by Boland etal (2022) as a framework to consider and reflect on our experiences as researchers and those of ourparticipants.Findings:We highlight the gatekeeper’s support, trusted relationship with the organisations, interpersonal skillsof interviewers, stringent measures of securing data and shared experiences of interviewee andinterviewers helped complete virtual research. We recommend that four key factors such as digitalcompetency, feasibility, flexibility and resilience should be considered while undertaking orcommissioning virtual, qualitative research studies.Originality/Value:Social care practitioners and qualitative researchers increasingly negotiate with digital technologies toundertake their work. In this paper, we evidence how online qualitative approaches can be effectiveprovided challenges are dealt with diligently in each stage of the research process

Can late language learners acquire second language grammar? Evidence from linguistic to neuroscience methods
Grounded in liquidity: writing and identity in third space
In this article, we argue that writing for publication has the potential to support the creation, negotiation and stabilisation of the professional identities of third space practitioners in higher education. Caught in the impermanence and unpredictability of liquid life, third space opens up unique opportunities in writing that afford its practitioners a means of building and sustaining identity. It expands academic writing beyond its normative constraints, creating a tension between the apparent permanence and solidity of writing and the liquidity that allows for the negotiation of meaning and identity. As such, writing, particularly for dissemination, provides third space practitioners with a strategy for creating a grounding narrative that helps to stabilise their own identity while allowing the flexibility required by a ‘liquid’ and uncertain present. We explore this process of negotiation by examining the role of writing in identity formation from the perspective of a range of third space practitioners, in an international triple-site qualitative research study involving learning developers, learning designers, academic developers and writing specialists. Our findings reveal that writing, as an act of negotiation of identity in third space, has the potential to actuate the fluidity of the space, so that it can become a site of liberation and resistance that may transform the very act of scholarly writing. What our study shows is that writing offers third space practitioners an opportunity to establish a narrative thread that may stabilise their liquid roles in academia
Experimental and CFD analysis based design of additively manufactured drum gate for open channel flow experiments
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is emerging as a cost-effective alternative to conventional manufacturing techniques for applications requiring components with complex geometries. Cost savings are achieved through reduced raw material usage, shorter manufacturing times, and the elimination of expensive tooling. AM serves as a valuable tool for designing and developing complex shapes in fluid flow research. This study examines the limitations of existing components in a 2.5 m open channel fluid flow experiment, characterized by their basic standard shapes. Specifically, it focuses on enhancing flow control in hydraulic systems by introducing gates with intricate geometries, which are typically expensive and time consuming to acquire from equipment suppliers. AM technology provides a cost-effective solution for implementing progressive design modifications. This paper presents a comparative analysis of various positions of an AM-produced curved drum gate in terms of flow rate, fluid velocity profile, water level height, and related fluid flow parameters. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, analysis, and simulation techniques are used to analyse and validate the results. Based on the experimental findings and their verification, this paper discusses the suitability and applicability of AM techniques in fluid flow analysis. The ability to manufacture customized components through AM offers a promising avenue for enhancing fluid flow research, enabling cost-effective and time-efficient design modifications.
