Popular Universities In Europe As A Tool For Civic Engagement And Social Inclusion: Origins, Importance And The Case Of Valencia

ABSTRACT This short communication briefly explores the origins of Popular Universities in Europe, with quotes from the Popular University of Valencia as a representative example of the Spanish model. These entities, which emerged in the 19th century under various names, shared common goals of promoting accessible education and civic engagement, and, at present, they continue to play a vital role in fostering lifelong learning and social inclusion, although, in many cases, they do not receive the recognition they deserve. The article therefore advocates for the revitalisation of these institutions within academic and policy discourse, urging renewed research to reconnect them with formal educational structures and align them with global development goals such as SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)

„Myśmy byli przesyceni tą historią, którą nam przekazywano…”1 Między językiem perswazji wojennej a językiem narracji wspomnieniowej – miejsca wspólne

This article presents the results of comparative analyses of temporally, genologically and discursively diverse texts, i.e. excerpts from underground press published during World War II and 3,400 recollections of participants in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising (collected between 2003 and 2018). The authors draw on memory studies pertaining to the reminiscence effect and apply comparative stylistic analysis alongside corpusbased tools to examine the characteristics of reminiscence discourse. The article aims to highlight the stylistic and lexical convergences between the persuasive language of World War II and the recollections of those who witnessed the events of 1944. It explains the reasons behind these convergences and explores how veterans reflect on shaping their attitudes and beliefs within the context of a shared generational experience. The results suggest that this type of analysis could be valuable for further linguistic inquiry into text and memory, particularly with regard to the memory of history and style, in both diachronic linguistics and memory studies

Corona-Life-Ticker als ein kommunikatives Phänomen auf deutschen Nachrichtenportalen

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many German news portals began to use ‘live’ tickers to report on the topic. Such tickers are not a new phenomenon, but the duration of their display (almost a year at the time of this research) should beconsidered truly unprecedented. Previously, the events covered by ‘live’ tickers were not only shorter, but provided much more dynamic updates than during the pandemic. A classic example is a ticker for a sporting event, such as a football match, which lasts a little more than 90 minutes and describes the events on the pitch in real time. Even in the case of tickers relating to longer events, their duration typically does not exceed a few days. The use of a ‘live’ ticker with reference to the pandemic, however, creates a sharp dissonance between the convention and the reality. On the one hand, the convention of ‘live’ tickers demands relatively frequent updates to give the users the impression of staying informed. On the other hand, the months-long pandemic situation was insufficiently dynamic to sustain such frequent updates. For this reason alone, the ‘live’ pandemic tickers seem to be a perfect example of what Jean Baudrillard refers to as simulation. With a lack of new events to report, the tickers simulate activity by providing information on more general and less timesensitive aspects of the pandemic. While their publication may seem to violate the basic requirements of the text genre, they are necessary to maintain the publication frequency typical of ‘live’ tickers. Selected examples of such manipulation strategies are discussed in detail.&nbsp

    Pragmatizácia slovenskej štylistiky digitálnej éry

In this study, we respond to the fact that the context of the scientific interpretation of the stylistic differentiation in communication is formed by the framework conditions of contemporary communication, characterized by tendencies such as mediatization, digitalization, and the gradual democratization of social processes. Functional styles are transformed under the influence of new media, which expand communication possibilities and, at the same time, relativize classic style-forming factors, especiallyobjective ones such as author, environment, addressee, function. The expansion of the communication space of each style into the digital space significantly affects the functions it fulfills, the dynamics of genres (the transformation of traditional genres, the emergence of new genres and the disappearance of some traditional genres) and the qualitative transformation of styles (the form and stylistic values characteristic of expressions realized in individual spheres of communication change). The presentstudy aims to clarify the shift in the division and reflection of the communication continuum in the stylistics of the last 50 years. This is achieved using the support of traditionally divided communication spheres: the sphere of ordinary communication, the sphere of professional communication, the sphere of institutional contact, the sphere of mass media communication, the commercial sphere, and the sphere of artistic creation. Furthermore, the study specifically addresses the spheres of rhetoric, which affect the entire communication continuum

    Czech stylistics 1970–2020

The first part of the chapter presents an overview of the development of Czech stylistics after 1970. It draws attention to the important work of three Czech researchers: K. Hausenblas, M. Jelínek and A. Stich. It also mentions the reflection of the issueof style by literature scholars (M. Červenka, M. Jankovič, Z. Kožmín). Concerning the period after 1989, attention is devoted to the rising number of synthetic works, the authors of which are J. V. Bečka, the collective of J. Chloupek, M. Čechová, M. Krčmová and E. Minářová, and the group led by J. Hoffmannová (J. Homoláč, E. Chvalovská, P. Kaderka, L. Jílková, P. Mareš, K. Mrázková). J. Hoffmannová’sbook Stylistika a…[Stylistics and…] (1997) was focused on searching for the position of stylistics in the interdisciplinary context, above all in relation to newer fields and approaches. As for the prominent features of stylistic research, among others, there is mention of the re-evaluation of the concept of functional styles (e.g. in favor of communicative spheres) and style-forming factors, turning the attention to the style characteristics of dialogues and spoken expression, the research on conversationalization and colloquialization in public communication and the growing heterogeneity of texts accompanying the development of electronic communication. The chapter then devotes further attention to the individual spheres of communication. The sphere of everyday communication is characterized in relation to older concepts such as colloquial style, conversational style, colloquial Czech, and others. Emphasis is placed on the relationships between texts which are spoken (mainly dialogical ones) and those which are written (internet, social networks), which are currently increasing in number. – The sphere of institutional communication was previously associated above all with administrative style. Administrative texts havea close relationship to texts from the scholarly and advertising spheres; their formis strikingly influenced by the asymmetry in the participant roles (especially in communication between institutions and citizens). – The sphere of expert communication is further differentiated into scholarly communication and practical specialized communication. Scholarly texts are characterized by the gradual transition from traditional forms of expression to Anglo-Saxon conventions. At the same time, the proportion of spoken characteristics and multimodality is increasing. – The sphere of media communication, spoken and written, is significantly influenced by the new affordances of the internet. This gains in importance due to the requirement of quick reactions to current events and the activity of the recipients, who obtain access to the media space (commentaries, discussions). An attempt to keep texts brief and transparent is being asserted, and colloquialization is utilized in their linguistic component. – Fortexts from the sphere of advertising communication, informality, entertainment and multimodality are at the forefront; everything here is subordinate to the persuasive function, the attempt to gain and engage the interest of the addressees; politeness is integrated into manipulative strategies. – In the sphere of literary communication, observations are made regarding the extraordinary variation of expression, influenced, among others, by the relations between intratextual subjects: the use of various narrative means, the use of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons; the stylization of spoken language with various profiles (colloquialization); the intersection of literaryand electronic communication (blog novels, instapoetry and the like)

This article aims to present the concept of the Dispersed Corpus of Academic Discourse (Rozproszony Korpus Dyskursu Akademickiego – RKDA), still under construction. The corpus is a research project focused on collecting linguistic data to facilitate multifaceted studies of Polish scholarly, didactic, and popular science texts. Current efforts concentrate on the development of two subcorpora: one consisting of abstracts from academic articles published in 2023 in journals from the official ministerial list, and the other comprising academic lectures. The latter is at a more advanced stage and is expected to be completed in 2025. Ultimately, RKDA will include both written and spoken texts across various genres of academic discourse, ensuring broad applicability for research purposes. Data collection methods are tailored to the type of text, with separate metadata sheets customized for each subcorpus. The corpus includes basic morphosyntactic annotation (Stanza), which is further enriched with additional layers of annotation as analysis progresses. Depending on licensing agreements and author permissions, parts of the corpus will be made available via Korpusomat.eu and the Sketch Engine. RKDA’s main goal is to enable systematic research on academic texts, including stylistic and genological analysis, as well as to support anti-plagiarism and pro-innovation initiatives within the academic community. The originality of the project lies primarily in its combination of written and spoken data, and in the creation of a partially open, multi-genre resource of academic discourse developed in stages and continually expanded
