Analysis of Porous Asphalt Mixtures Regarding Their Mechanic and Surface Characteristics
Uncertainty and the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Case Study for Disaggregated Industrial Production
Employing principal component analysis (PCA), we build novel economic uncertainty indices for Turkey. Economic/business uncertainty and sectoral uncertainty indices sensitively detect important economic and political events in Turkey as well as Covid-19-induced uncertainty spiking to an all-time high during the outbreak, providing handy tools for policymakers. Then, we analyze the impact of the pandemic on the Turkish economy through general and sectoral industrial production indices employing structural VAR models. Moreover, we examine the forecast accuracy of the uncertainty indices and show that our uncertainty measures are not biased. Out-of-sample forecast power results suggest that the services-related uncertainty index significantly better proxies Covid-19 stimulated structural shocks. This is due to the immediate significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the service sector since lockdown measures initially affect this sector
Pre-service language teachers and practitioner research: Investigating professional role identity formation
Following the Exploratory Practice principles to equip pre-service language teachers with practitioner research skills through a research course, we employed narrative inquiry to explore perceptions of research engagement and the professional role identities constructed through it. The data for this study came from its two participants' written and oral narratives. Our findings indicated that the participants viewed their involvement in practitioner research positively and benefited from it both personally and professionally, achieving a transformative shift from a singular student-focused perspective to a more complex dual viewpoint that also embraces aspects of a teacher's perspective. Among the various professional role identities that language teachers enact, our participants emphasized the roles of ‘care provider’ and ‘motivator’ over more traditional role identities such as ‘presenter’ and ‘manager’. In addition, the roles of ‘learner’ and ‘researcher’, when combined, were found to be more dominant than the role of ‘knowledgeable, signifying an inquiry and growth mindset. A series of laboratory tests wereconducted on fava bean peel powder, including: chemical composition, mineral content,detection of chemically active compounds, qualitative and quantitative analysis of aminoacids, evaluation of functional properties (such as water and fat holding capacity,emulsification, and foam formation), and measurement of antioxidant and antibacterialproperties. The results showed that fava bean peels are a rich source of biologicallyimportant nutrients, recording good levels of dietary fiber (13.22%) and protein (3.81%),in addition to containing vital minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.Spectral analyses also revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, most notably Rutin,Kaempferol, Caffeic acid. Recent Advances in Plant-Based Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles: A Sustainable Approach for Combating Plant-Parasitic Nematodes
Caries status influence GCF MMP-9 in association with serum vitamin D: an exploratory retrospective cross-sectional study
Background: MMP-9 contributes to tissue destruction in dental caries, and vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate this by increasing MMP-9 expression. Objective: This study aimed to compare matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) among healthy, carious, and filled teeth, and assess the association between serum vitamin D levels and site-specific GCF MMP-9 concentrations. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 117 participants with gingival health or gingivitis, excluding individuals with clinical attachment loss. GCF samples were collected from the first molars. Participants’ periodontal status was categorized as healthy or gingivitis, and the sampled teeth were classified as healthy (no caries/restorations), carious (active decay), or filled. Serum vitamin D levels were measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA), and MMP-9 levels in GCF were assessed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Among the participants, 62 had gingivitis and 55 were periodontally healthy. MMP-9 levels were significantly higher in carious teeth (26.6 ± 9.9 ng/30 sec) compared to healthy (17.4 ± 8.7 ng) and restored teeth (18.9 ± 8.7 ng). No significant difference was observed between healthy and restored teeth. Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent (90%). Regression analysis, adjusted for periodontal status, age, and gender, confirmed that caries status, periodontal condition, and Vitamin D levels significantly influenced MMP-9 levels. Conclusion: MMP-9 levels in GCF were significantly elevated in carious teeth, indicating a potential role in caries progression. Vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate this process by enhancing MMP-9 production. Elevated MMP-9 could accelerate tissue breakdown, increasing vulnerability to deeper decay and pulp involvement. These findings suggest a link between Vitamin D levels, MMP-9 activity, and caries severity. Further studies with larger samples are needed to validate these results
