Anatomy, Palynology, Seed And Leaf Mıcromorphology Of Turkısh Endemıc Allıum Brevıcaule Boıss. & Balansa And Allıum Scorodoprasum Ssp. Rotundum (L.) Stearn
In this study, two species belonging to the genus Allium and distributed in Turkey are investigated. A thick cuticle is observed on the epidermis of the scapes of the species. The epicuticular layer is not evident in Allium scorodoprasum ssp. rotundum (L.) Stearn. Secretory cavities have been formed in the pith region of the species. Vascular bundles are in the form of two rings, one above and one below the sclerenchymatic ring. The cross-section of the leaf of Allium brevicaule Boiss. & Balansa is circular, unlike A. scorodoprasum ssp. rotundum. In both species, the stomata are located lower than the epidermis cells. The seeds of A. brevicaule are smaller than in A. scorodoprasum ssp. rotundum and they are polygonal shaped. The testa cells of A. brevicaule seeds have scalariform and tuberculate ornamentation. A. scorodoprasum seeds have reticulate sculpture testa. The species have sulcate pollen types. The pollen form of A. brevicaule is perprolate, and that of A. scorodoprasum ssp. rotundum is subprolate. The apertures in both species are monosulcus. In A. brevicaule, the sulcus does not extend to the poles at the proximal end. Therefore, the differences in the scape and leaf anatomy, as well as in palynology and micromorphology, can be used to distinguish Allium species. © Polish Academy of Sciences and Jagiellonian University, Cracow 2022
Karyomorphology of Two Cyprinid Barbels (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from Gediz River, Turkey
Abstract: Barbus pergamonensis Karaman, 1971 and Luciobarbus lydianus (Boulenger, 1896) were studied karyologically. Karyotypes and chromosomal banding techniques with C-banding and silver staining were determined. Diploid chromosome numbers (2n) were invariably 100; karyotypes were composed of 26 metasentric (m), 20 submetacentric (sm) and 54 subtelo-acrocentric (st-a) chromosomes in B. pergamonensis and 24 m, 22 sm and 54 st-a chromosomes in L. lydianus. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were determined. C-bands were observed on the pericentromeric regions of some of the chromosomes in the studied species. Multiple nucleolus organizer regions were detected in both species. This study shall contribute to barbels cytotaxonomy. © 2022, Allerton Press, Inc

Selenoprotein P levels in patients with diabetes mellitus with complications
Aims: Increasing evidence has shown that selenoprotein P levels are elevated in type 2 diabetes mellitus and are associated with insulin resistance and release. This study aimed to determine if there was a connection between selenoprotein P levels and metabolic parameters in patients with diabetes with microvascular complications. Methods: Serum selenoprotein P concentrations were measured by ELISA in 44 patients with diabetes with complications and 36 patients with diabetes without complications. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in selenoprotein P levels between the groups [1.9 (0.9–2.6) and 1.9 (0.8–2.4) ng/mL, respectively, p = 0.565]. Selenoprotein P, glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not statistically significantly correlated in patients with complications. However, there was a significant correlation with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = − 0.401, p = 0.042). Conclusions: We did not find high selenoprotein P levels in patients with complications, but its inverse association with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol indicates that it may play a role in developing cardiovascular disease in this community of patients. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India
Comparison of Intraoperative and Postoperative Outcomes of Proximal Femoral Nailing and Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty Techniques in Intertrochanteric Femur Fracture Treatment [İntertrokanterik Femur Kırığı Tedavisinde Proksimal Femoral Çivileme ve Bipolar Hemiartroplasti Tekniklerinin İntraoperatif ve Postoperatif Sonuçlarının Karşılaştırılması]
Aim: This study was undertaken with the purpose of comparing the short and long term surgical, clinical, and functional results between bipolar hemiarthroplasty and proximal femoral nailing in the same cohort of patients. Material and Methods: The retrospective scanning of two-year data of a tertiary care hospital has been carried out for patients with hip fractures undergoing proximal femoral nailing and bipolar hemiarthroplasty. 67 patients underwent proximal femoral nailing and 74 patients underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty were included in the study. Each patient's short and long term outcomes were documented as well as their preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative features. Results: There were no significant differences in the demographic features of both groups. The median intraoperative blood loss was significantly higher in the group who underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty compared to the group who underwent proximal femoral nailing (450 cc vs 300 cc, respectively, p<0.001). It was found that the bipolar hemiarthroplasty procedure was associated with a greater need for intraoperative transfusion than the proximal femoral nailing procedure (p=0.007). Intraoperative complications were reported only in patients who underwent bipolar hemiarthroplasty. The need for intensive care unit was significantly higher in the bipolar hemiarthroplasty group than in the proximal femoral nailing group, with the rate of 86.5% (n=64) and 68.7% (n=46), respectively (p=0.011). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the proximal femoral nailing procedure appears to be a more reliable surgical technique in patients with hip fractures in terms of both intraoperative complications and the postoperative need for an intensive care unit. © 2022, Duzce University Medical School. The Effects of the Violence Tendency Levels of Nursing Students on Their Attitudes Towards Homosexual Individuals
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Nurses' attitudes towards homosexuality are an important factor affecting the quality of care given to homosexual individuals. Therefore, attitudes towards homosexual individuals and the variables affecting these attitudes should be investigated in the undergraduate period of nursing students. This study was conducted to determine the effects of the violence tendency levels of nursing students on their attitudes towards homosexual individuals.MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional and descriptive design. It was conducted with 502 nursing students at a state university. The data were collected using a student information form, the Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale (HRHS) and the Violence Tendency Scale (VTS).RESULTS: The mean HRHS score of the students was 94.25 +/- 22.23, and their mean VTS score was 37.82 +/- 8.25. It was found that the students' attitudes towards homosexuals were related to their academic year, number of siblings, the region they lived in, and whether they live with their parents or not. Additionally, it was determined that the students' level of tendency towards violence was low, and low levels of violence tendency were related to higher levels of education of the mother ( p<0.05). There was no significant relationship between the students' violence tendency levels and their homophobia levels (R-2=0.001).CONCLUSION: It was determined that the nursing students' level of tendency towards violence was low, but their attitudes towards homosexuals were negative. Their level of tendency towards violence did not explain their attitude towards homosexuals significantly. These results showed that there are different factors affecting nursing students' homophobic attitudes
Multidimensional scaling analysis for investigating relations between milk yield and fertility parameters
Milk yield and fertility traits in dairy cattle and their relationship with the influencing factors were investigated using multidimensional scaling analysis (MDS) in this study. The study focused on the relationship between lactation length, 305-day milk yield, actual milk yield and peak remaining days from milk yield characteristics, and service period, dry period, insemination per conception and calving interval from fertility traits, as well as the influencing factors such as calving age, lactation number, birth season, and birth year. When the MDS results were examined, it was discovered that all the traits had close Euclidean distances from each other, save for the birth season and birth year. As a result of MDS analysis, R2 and Stress Coefficient were calculated as 88.4% and 0.099, respectively. Consequently, the selection direction was tried to be identified by determining the milk yield and fertility traits and the relationship between these traits and the influencing factors through the MDS analysis and it was concluded that the MDS method could be employed in this field © 2022,Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinaria e Zootecnia. An unique unilateral tendon variation of the extensor digitorum longus muscle
Purpose: The double tendon of extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle was observed on the left leg of a 80-year-old male cadaver. Methods: A male cadaver 80 years old was subjected to routine anatomical dissection for research and teaching purposes. Results: The main tendon of the EDL muscle started just at the end of the muscle belly. However, the accessory tendon started at the tendinous end of the muscle as a continuation of the muscle. The main and accessory tendons split into two more slips after passing through the same tunnel below the extensor retinaculum. There was also difference on ending of the tendon slips of EDL muscle. The main tendon divided into two tendinous slips on the dorsum of the foot attached to the second and third toes. The accessory tendon divided into two tendinous slips on the dorsum of the foot attached to the fourth and the fifth toes. Conclusion: Knowledge of the tendons and anatomical differences of this muscle is important for surgeons in interventional procedures involving the dorsum of the foot. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag France SAS, part of Springer Nature
Co-movements and causalities between ethanol production and corn prices in the USA: New evidence from wavelet transform analysis
The literature has been increasingly examining the existence of possible compatibility or conflict hypotheses between biofuels and food security in recent years. While current research outputs do not provide a consensus, the new evidence can guide sustainable development policies. In this context, this paper investigates the co-movements between fuel ethanol production and corn prices for the US employing oil production, population, and real exchange rate control variables via the Morlet wavelet analysis from 1990:m1 to 2021:m4. The results of the analysis provide empirical evidence for the dynamics of the relationship between ethanol production and corn prices in the short and long term. However, the striking output of this paper is that increases in corn prices have followed increases in fuel ethanol production in the US markets since 2010. Especially in the long-term (from 2010:m3 to 2019:m12), the increase in ethanol production caused an increase in corn prices. From a sustainable development perspective, this paper points to the existence of a conflict between ethanol production and corn prices in the US over the past decade. © 2022 Elsevier Lt
Influence of laurel (Laurus nobilis) essential oil on gut function of Black Sea salmon (Salmo labrax) juveniles
The present work investigated the efects of dietary incorporation of laurel (Laurus nobilis) essential oil on the zootechnical performance and digestive physiology of juvenile Black Sea salmon (Salmo labrax). In this trial, 15 fberglass tanks (39×39 cm square and 33 cm high) were used. Forty-fve fsh (3.52±0.01 g) were placed randomly per tank. Fish were fed for 90 days with the diet containing 50, 100, 200, or 400 mg kg−1 laurel (Laurus nobilis) essential oils, respectively. The work was performed in the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) operating with freshwater. Fish were manually fed 3%
level of live weight during the experiment period. Final weight (FW), weight gain (WG), feed conversion rate (FCR), and
specifc growth rate (SGR) were not afected by laurel essential oil supplementation. Dietary laurel essential oil (50 mg kg−1)
afected positively the surface area of fsh intestinal villus that required for digestion. Both villus height and villus width
were afected positively in fsh fed with 50 mg laurel essential oil kg−1. While incorporation with 100 mg laurel essential oil
kg−1 increased the total α-amylase enzyme, 50 mg laurel kg−1 increased lipase enzyme. Moreover, 50 mg laurel essential
oil kg−1 increased lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count in fsh. Besides, 50 mg laurel essential oil kg−1 reduced the number of
total coliform and E. coli
