Changes in the Quality of Dried Vacuum-Infused Strawberries Enriched with Encapsulated Pomegranate Peel Extract During Storage

    No full text
The low stability of phenolic compounds restricts their use in the food industry. Encapsulation can help protect these compounds during food processing. In this study, pomegranate peel extract (PPE) was encapsulated and then used to produce dried vacuum-infused strawberries. The quality changes of strawberry products enriched with encapsulated pomegranate peel extract (EPPE) were investigated during 90 days of storage at 25 degrees C and compared to those infused with non-encapsulated PPE. During storage, the dried strawberries enriched with EPPE exhibited higher contents oftotal phenolics and individual phenolics, such as ellagic acid and punicalagin, than the dried strawberries with PPE.The total phenolic content of the strawberry product with EPPE was preserved at 9.40% better after 90 days of storage compared to the product enriched with PPE. Additionally, after storage, the strawberry product with EPPE showed significantly lower microbial counts (total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, yeast, and mold) and reduced browning index compared to the product with PPE. Moisture content changes during storage were controlled to the greater extent in the product with EPPE, contributing to its structural integrity. These results indicate that encapsulation, combined with vacuum impregnation, can effectively enhance the stability, microbial safety, and shelf-life of dried infused strawberries.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) 1002-Short Term R&D Funding Program [119O181]This work was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) 1002-Short Term R&D Funding Program (Project number: 119O181)

Promising Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Materials: Hybrid Fillers Reinforced Bio-Based Composites

    No full text
Electromagnetic pollution, also known as electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues, is a growing concern as electronic and telecommunication technologies advance. The resulting urgent demand for EMI shielding materials underscores the need for the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly shielding materials. Here, we assess the impact of multiscale carbon-based hybrid filler on the EMI shielding performance of polyamide 11/poly(lactic acid) composites. The effects of the amounts (0.5 to 5 wt%) of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanofillers in carbon fiber (CF)/GNP and CF/MWCNT-reinforced hybrid composites were comparatively investigated. The composites were fabricated through melt blending/compression molding and subsequently characterized in terms of morphological, fiber length, electrical properties, and EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). Morphological imaging revealed a good adhesion between the fillers and the matrix, indicating a favorable interaction. The fiber length analysis demonstrated that fiber lengths were longer in CF/GNP hybrid composites than in CF/MWCNT. The EMI SE measurements showed the synergistic effects of the fillers in the X and Ku bands. The highest EMI SE values at 10 GHz and 16 GHz for the 20CF-5GNP composite were 34 and 40 dB, respectively.Kocaeli University Scientific Research Projects Unit [FDK-2021-2783]; KOUBAPThis work was supported by KOUBAP; Kocaeli University Scientific Research Projects Unit, FDK-2021-278

    No full text
According to World Health Organization, seasonal influenza cases, which result in 290,000 to 650,000 deaths, place influenza A viruses among the leading causes of major health issues. Although many antivirals are used to overcome this health problem, these drugs may be ineffective due to antiviral resistance-related mutations in the influenza genome. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the noncovalent interactions (NCI) between baloxavir, which is one of the most recently approved drugs for use, and selected amino acids through Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for the first time. To achieve this goal, conformer analyses of Baloxavir and selected amino acids were performed using the MMFF (Merck Molecular Force Field) algorithm. Geometry optimization and frequency analyses were performed using density functional theory (DFT) at the ωB97XD/6-31+G(d,p) level using Gaussian 16. As a result of this study, numerous types of NCIs were identified between baloxavir and isoleucine, threonine, lysine, glutamic acid, alanine, and tyrosine, in addition to the NCI types previously reported in the literature using different methods. Furthermore, the binding energies between the amino acids and baloxavir were calculated, revealing that glutamic acid exhibits the highest binding energy, while alanine has the lowest

Industries Integrating Türkiye to the World: An Empirical Analysis Using Intercountry Forward and Backward Linkage Coefficients

    No full text
Global value chain (GVC) is defined as a production process involving value-added from at least two countries with increasing global integration. This study aims to identify the industries triggered by the exports/imports of intermediate inputs in the rest of the world / Türkiye for the industries that Türkiye has identified as targets in the 2023 Industry and Technology Strategy Document. In this way, it is determined in which industries Türkiye is articulated to GVCs through its target industries. The analysis is carried out by calculating the forward and backward linkage coefficients between countries in the multi-country input-output matrix. As an analysis tool, the input-output matrix with 45 industries and 64 countries produced by the OECD for 2018 is used. In the analysis, the matrix is used by aggregating it as two countries in the form of Türkiye and the rest of the world. Analysis indicates that inter-country calculated forward and backward linkage coefficients for both intermediate input exports and imports of the target industries “electrical equipment”, “chemicals”, “machinery” and “motor vehicles” are greater than 1. This finding can be interpreted as a mutual interdependence between the production of the world and Türkiye through these industries. Additionally, it can be said that Türkiye is unidirectionally dependent on imports from abroad in the “computers and electronic and optical products” industry. Another finding is that there is a relative compatibility between the industries that Türkiye has been exporting the most for many years and the industries with high value-added and high technology content that are targeted to be exported in the recent period

An In-Depth Analysis of the Finfish Aquaculture in Türkiye: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Prospects

    No full text
Aquaculture emerges as a crucial solution for addressing the global food shortage of an estimated 10 billion people by 2050. In Türkiye, aquaculture plays a significant role in supporting the economy and ensuring food security. Over the past two decades, finfish production in Türkiye surged from 61,163 to 547,505 t, generating $1.7 billion in export revenue across over 100 countries. This growth has been driven by technological advancements, robust governmental support, and increasing global demand for aquaculture products. However, the sector also faces persistent challenges, including the need to enhance sustainability, mitigate ecological impacts, and manage finite resources. As Europe's leading fish producer, the Turkish aquaculture sector must continue to innovate and expand to meet the demands of a growing population. Despite the expanding research on Turkish finfish aquaculture, there is no comprehensive review that consolidates both scientific progress and sectoral developments. This study fills that void by combining a bibliometric analysis of 1958 scientific publications from 1983 to 2023 with an in-depth sectoral evaluation, providing a holistic understanding of the Turkish aquaculture sector. The bibliometric analysis highlights key research areas, trends, and knowledge gaps, while the sectoral overview examines production trends, dynamics of the feed industry, technological innovations, and economic factors. It also addresses challenges such as climate change impacts, reliance on imported feed ingredients, and disease issues, discussing potential avenues for sustainable growth through innovation, policy reforms, and technological integration. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, offering insights into the current state and future directions of finfish aquaculture in Türkiye. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

Karbon emisyonlarının temel ekonomik belirleyicileri: Gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkeler üzerine panel veri analizi

    No full text
Global warming and climate change stand as the foremost environmental challenges threatening sustainable development in the contemporary world. Carbon emissions (CO2), regarded as the primary driver of this process, exert increasing pressure on nations' environmental, energy, and economic policies with each passing year. In this context, elucidating the economic, energy-related, and institutional determinants of carbon emissions is of critical importance for the formulation of effective policy measures. This study aims to analyze the key factors influencing carbon emissions by employing a panel dataset encompassing 41 countries422 developed and 19 developing-over the period 2000-2021. The independent variables under consideration include GDP per capita, energy efficiency, renewable energy consumption, fossil fuel consumption, and property rights. Following panel unit root and cointegration tests, the long-term effects are examined using the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator, while the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test is applied to uncover causal relationships among the variables. The findings reveal that the impacts on carbon emissions vary across country groups. Energy efficiency, contrary to expectations, exhibits an emission-increasing effect in both groups, whereas economic growth is found to have a significant positive impact on emissions. Renewable energy consumption reduces emissions solely in developed nations, while fossil fuel consumption elevates emissions across all countries. Although the property rights variable does not yield a direct significant effect, it demonstrates indirect influences in certain nations. These results underscore the necessity of tailoring policy designs according to country-specific characteristics to achieve sustainable development objectives

Material and Methods: This study was conducted between December 1, 2023, and March 1, 2024, in the "General Surgery Unit of Ege University Hospital". The study, which was descriptive and cross-sectional in design, included a sample of 132 patients hospitalized in the general surgery unit who voluntarily agreed to participate. Data were collected using the "Patient Demographic Form", "Caring Behaviors Inventory - CBI24" and "Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Care Scale - NSNCS". For data analysis, the "Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0" was utilized. The distribution of the data was presented using "descriptive analysis parameters" [mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, frequency, and percentage]. The normality of the data distribution was assessed using the "Shapiro-Wilk test". As the data did not follow a normal distribution, "Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests" were employed in the analysis. For comparisons showing significant differences, the source of the difference was identified using the "Tamhane's T2 Post Hoc test". A "95% confidence interval" was used for the analysis. Results: The average age of the patients participating in the study was 50.67±15.95 years. The youngest patient was 21 years old, while the oldest was 89 years old, with the majority (35.6%) falling into the 35-49 age group. Among the participants, 32.6% were middle school graduates, 22.8% were retirees, 50.8% were unemployed, 91.7% resided in the city, and 100% had social security coverage. Additionally, 65.2% of the patients reported having no chronic illness. It was also determined that 53.0% of the patients had been hospitalized before, 59.8% had undergone a surgical procedure in the past, 47.7% had been hospitalized only once until now, and 25.0% had stayed in the hospital for three nights during their most recent hospitalization. The mean score of the "Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Care Scale (NSNCS)" was 79.00±16.47. A statistically significant difference was found between the total "NSNCS score" and the patients' age, marital status, and the number of nights they stayed in the hospital during this admission [p<0.05]. It was observed that patients aged 65 and older had higher "NSNCS" mean scores compared to those in other age groups. Additionally, patients who stayed in the hospital for five nights had higher "NSNCS" scores. The overall mean score of the "Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI)" was found to be 5.19 ± 0.86. The subscale scores were as follows: the "Commitment" subscale scored 5.13 ± 0.92, the "Respectfulness" subscale scored 5.18 ± 0.92, the "Knowledge and Skill" subscale scored 5.23 ± 0.84, and the "Assurance" subscale scored 5.22 ± 0.87. Patients aged 65 and older had higher mean scores in the "Commitment," "Knowledge and Skill," and "Assurance" subscales, as well as in the overall "CBI score", compared to other age groups. It was observed that single patients reported greater satisfaction with nursing care in the "Commitment" and "Respectfulness" subscales compared to married patients. Regarding the number of nights spent in the hospital during this admission, patients who stayed for four nights had higher overall "CBI scores" and higher scores in the "Commitment," "Knowledge and Skill," and "Assurance" subscales than those who stayed for fewer or more nights. "A statistically significant difference" was found between the length of hospital stay and the perception of caring behaviors [p<0.05]. The lowest scores in the perception of nursing care were observed among patients who stayed for three nights in the "Commitment" subscale, those who stayed for two nights in the "Respectfulness" subscale, those who stayed for three nights in the "Knowledge and Skill" subscale, and those who stayed for two nights in the "Assurance" subscale. Conclusion: It was determined that the mean score of the "Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Care Scale (NSNCS)" among the patients participating in the study was above the median level, indicating a high level of satisfaction. Additionally, the overall and subscale mean scores of the "Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI)" were found to be very high. "A statistically significant relationship" was identified between age, marital status, and the length of hospital stay, and the mean scores of both the "NSNCS" and the overall and "subscale scores of the CBI"

Overweight, obesity, and cardiovascular disease in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia: the EAS FH Studies Collaboration registry

    No full text
Background and Aims Overweight and obesity are modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the general population, but their prevalence in individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) and whether they confer additional risk of ASCVD independent of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) remains unclear. Methods Cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 35 540 patients with HeFH across 50 countries, in the EAS FH Studies Collaboration registry. Prevalence of World Health Organization-defined body mass index categories was investigated in adults (n = 29 265) and children/adolescents (n = 6275); and their association with prevalent ASCVD. Results Globally, 52% of adults and 27% of children with HeFH were overweight or obese, with the highest prevalence noted in Northern Africa/Western Asia. A higher overweight/obesity prevalence was found in non-high-income vs. high-income countries. Median age at familial hypercholesterolaemia diagnosis in adults with obesity was 9 years older than in normal weight adults. Obesity was associated with a more atherogenic lipid profile independent of lipid-lowering medication. Prevalence of coronary artery disease increased progressively across body mass index categories in both children and adults. Compared with normal weight, obesity was associated with higher odds of coronary artery disease in children (odds ratio 9.28, 95% confidence interval 1.77-48.77, adjusted for age, sex, lipids, and lipid-lowering medication) and coronary artery disease and stroke in adults (odds ratio 2.35, 95% confidence interval 2.10-2.63 and odds ratio 1.65, 95% confidence interval 1.27-2.14, respectively), but less consistently with peripheral artery disease. Adjusting for diabetes, hypertension and smoking modestly attenuated the associations. Conclusions Overweight and obesity are common in patients with HeFH and contribute to ASCVD risk from childhood, independent of LDL-C and lipid-lowering medication. Sustained body weight management is needed to reduce the risk of ASCVD in HeFH.Pfizer Independent Grant for Learning Change [16157823]; Merck Sharp Dohme; Regeneron; National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration Northwest London; NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Northwest London and Imperial NIHR Biomedical Research Centre; Ministry of Universities, Spain; University of Seville, Spain; Ricerca Corrente from the Ministry of Health to IRCCS MultiMedica; Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE); National Professorial Council (MPN); Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia; Austrian Heart Foundation; Tyrolean Regional GovernmentThe EAS FHSC is an academic initiative that has received funding from a Pfizer Independent Grant for Learning & Change 2014 (16157823) and from investigator-initiated research grants to Imperial College London from Amgen, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Sanofi-Aventis, Daiichi Sankyo, and Regeneron.
