Characterizing the diet of Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus across its spatial range: a metadata analysis spanning over three decades

    No full text
Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (ABFT) are highly migratory predators that feed across diverse foraging habitats throughout their range. ABFT diet has been characterized regionally, but a broader analysis is needed to help inform ecosystem-based management of these economically and ecologically important predators, given their environmental and spatial plasticity. We conducted a metadata analysis using assembled diet data from 1985-2020 (n = 4997 total stomachs; 4046 non-empty stomachs) for ABFT (6-328 cm straight fork length, SFL) from 9 Longhurst Provinces (LPs). ABFT trophic ecology was characterized by exploring relationships between (1) diet composition (using classification trees), (2) total stomach content weight (using generalized additive models, GAMs), and (3) predator-prey size (using quantile regression and GAMs) and spatial, temporal, biological, and environmental variables. Diet composition primarily differed by sampling year, LP, and ABFT SFL. Diet over the Northwest Atlantic shelf was distinct due to the prevalence of Clupeidae. Temporal splits in this region were based on consumption of Ammodytidae and Ommastrephidae in the earliest and latest years of our data set, respectively. Diet composition for the other LPs primarily differed based on SFL, with smaller ABFT (= 79 cm) consuming ommastrephids and paralepidids. Total stomach content weight and prey length increased asymptotically with ABFT SFL and varied in relation to environmental, sampling, and spatial variables. Quantifying diet composition by space and ontogeny is useful for developing improved food web models to better understand ecosystem effects of fisheries. Our metadata analysis also highlights future research priorities.Scanlan Family FoundationAcknowledgements. This study examines the topics of illness and health in 21st-century German literature through Juli Zeh's Corpus Delicti: Ein Prozess and Thea Dorn's Trost. Briefe an Max. One of the key reasons for selecting this topic and these works is the contemporary relevance of health and illness both as literary themes and as critical and significant debates for society. Particularly, the fact that research related to COVID-19 and the pandemic remains a new and evolving field in literary studies highlights the necessity of this investigation as addressing a gap in the discipline. The study analyses these works by considering Foucault's biopolitical approach. Giorgio Agamben's Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life, which builds on Foucault's concept of biopolitics and blends philosophical and juridical approaches to frame the spheres of political power within a historical context, is also used as a methodological lens in the analysis of the texts. Agamben's critical views on the political and medical measures implemented worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic further inform the separate analyses of the two literary works. By utilizing discourse theory, another aim of this study is to draw attention to the influence of health and illness discourses in literature through examples from the two works. Based on the findings of the analysis, the study examines the reflections of Foucault's understanding of power and authority in literature, as drawn from these two works addressing representations of health and illness in 21st-century German literature and concludes that these reflections resonate with the conditions of modern society during the COVID-19 era. During this period, characterized by the disruption of societal balances and the reconstruction of social order, Agamben's critiques of states of exception and the emerging new order have found a significant place in reality.Bu çalışmada 21. yüzyıl Alman dili edebiyatında hastalık ve sağlık temalarının ele alınışı Juli Zeh'in Corpus Delicti: Ein Prozess ve Thea Dorn'un Trost. Briefe an Max adlı eserleri üzerinden incelenmektedir.

In the increasingly globalized world, rising competition, the growing importance of exports, accelerated production, and the emergence of new markets have negatively affected companies. As a result, firms must make faster and more accurate decisions within their production processes to avoid adverse effects in such a volatile environment. Responding promptly to customer demands with high quality, in the desired quantity, and within the specified timeframe provides a competitive advantage. In this context, the selection of subcontractors a common practice in the textile sector holds vital importance. The capabilities of subcontractors, including labor quality, capacity, and other competencies, significantly contribute to the timely, high-quality, cost-effective, and accurate execution of production, thereby providing important advantages to textile firms in a variable environment. Thus, the choice of subcontractor, recognized as a prevalent issue in the textile industry, directly impacts all processes within a firm. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to present a multi-criteria decision-making model for effective subcontractor selection. In this model, 8 criteria and 10 alternative subcontractors are considered for the product groups of pants-skirts-dresses (low quantity), pants-skirts-dresses (high quantity), and jackets/shirts, and it has been implemented in a textile company collaborating with leading global firms. Initially, the weights of the criteria are determined using the Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) method. Subsequently, subcontractor selections are compared using the Multi-Attribute Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA) and Additive Ratio Assessment (ARAS) methods. Based on the weighting process, for the pants-skirts-dresses (low quantity) product group, social and environmental compatibility, quality system audits, and collaboration are identified as the most important criteria. For the pants-skirts-dresses (high quantity) product group, daily capacity, price, and social and environmental compatibility are concluded to be the most important criteria. For the jackets/shirts product group, social and environmental compatibility, daily capacity, and price are considered the most significant criteria. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

    No full text
Objectives: To investigate the prognostic significance of regular imaging follow-up in Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and assess its rationality. Methods: This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study. A total of 204 adult patients with TAK from 11 tertiary centers, and 580 imaging studies of these patients were included to encompass all concurrent clinical and laboratory findings. Results: The median follow-up time was 72 (36-96) months. Radiological activity and/or progression was observed in 116 (20 %) of the 580 imaging. A total of 418 (72 %) of the 580 imaging were performed while the physician's global assessment (PGA) was inactive. Radiological activity and/or progression was observed in only 18 (4 %) of the PGA inactive imaging. Younger age [OR 0.980; 95 % CI: 0.961-0.999, P = 0.041] and active PGA [OR 31.766; 95 % CI: 17.961-56.219, P < 0.001] were predictors of radiological activity and/or progression. There was no difference in terms of disease outcomes (MACE, VDI score, and mortality) between patients who underwent regular imaging follow-up regardless of clinical activity once a year or more and others. Conclusion: In the absence of clinical activity, the rate of radiological activity and/or progression is very low in patients with TAK during routine follow-up. It seems more reasonable to develop a personalised imaging follow-up plan that takes clinical activity findings into account rather than regular imaging follow-up

Yeşil Mosque/Zaviye, one of the most popular works of its period, is of great importance not only for its architectural foundation and ornaments but also as a building symbolising the rebirth of the Ottoman Empire. It is also a structure of gratitude to the Ahis and Abdals who supported Mehmed I’s ascension to the throne. The building, which is frequently mentioned by historical sources and the subject of researchers’ analyses, still needs to be examined in many ways. Within the scope of our study, the magnificent stone decorations of the building were examined and it was determined that the unfinished parts of the decorations on the north façade were more than known. It was understood that these decorations, which were never made, the contours of the ornaments were drawn and left raw, the depth was not given and the details were not processed, were present along the entire north façade, but attention was paid to the systematic and unobtrusive placement of these deficiencies. In addition to the identifi? cation of unfinished ornaments, answering the question of why they could not be completed is also among the aims of our study. Researchers who conduct studies on the Green Mosque and similar unfinished buildings usually attribute this situation to political and economic reasons. However, when the subject is analysed in the specific case of the Green Mosque, it is seen that neither political nor economic reasons sufficiently answer the question of why the decorations could not be completed. The failure to complete the decorations of such an important building in this period, when the Ottoman Empire was revived, a relatively peaceful period was experienced, and no economic problems were recorded, must be due to the deteriorating health of Mehmed I. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

    No full text
Background/Objectives: The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, particularly in high-stakes environments such as operating rooms (ORs), is expanding rapidly. While AI has the potential to enhance patient safety and clinical efficiency, it may also trigger anxiety among healthcare professionals due to uncertainties around job displacement, ethical concerns, and system reliability. This study aimed to examine the relationship between AI-related anxiety and patient safety attitudes among OR professionals. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional research design was employed. The sample included 155 OR professionals from a university and a city hospital in Turkey. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale (AIAS), and the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire-Operating Room version (SAQ-OR). Statistical analyses included t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression. Results: The mean AIAS score was 3.25 +/- 0.8, and the mean SAQ score was 43.2 +/- 10.5. Higher AI anxiety was reported by males and those with postgraduate education. Participants who believed AI could improve patient safety scored significantly higher on AIAS subscales related to learning, job change, and AI configuration. No significant correlation was found between AI anxiety and safety attitudes (r = -0.064, p > 0.05). Conclusions: Although no direct association was found between AI anxiety and patient safety attitudes, belief in AI's potential was linked to greater openness to change. These findings suggest a need for targeted training and policy support to promote safe and confident AI adoption in surgical practice

Clinical and molecular findings in actin-related inborn errors of immunity: the middle East and North Africa registry

    No full text
Background: The majority of monogenic inborn errors of immunity presenting as actinopathies were reported originally from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries indicating a high prevalence of these entities in the region. However, their prognosis is unclear due to rarity and lack of comprehensive treatment outcomes. Methods: We evaluated clinical, immunological, and genetic abnormalities associated with 15 genetic entities of actinopathies. Based on the function of mutant genes in actin-regulatory pathways, patients were classified into CDC42- and RAC2-related subcategories. Results: A total of 503 individuals (29.5% females) from 17 countries were considered with a median age of 120 months. Although most patients presented initially with allergic phenotypes (37.7%), the most prevalent manifestations throughout the lifespan were infection in respiratory tracts (72.2%). Primary clinical diagnosis was mainly combined immunodeficiencies (48.3%) and the majority of cases were molecularly assigned to the CDC42 pathway (64.8%). The most common genetic defects were reported within the DOCK8 (n = 209) followed by the WAS (n = 94) and the CARMIL2 (n = 15) genes. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was conducted on 24.0% of patients, which significantly improved survival in patients with defects in WAS, DOCK8 and DOCK2. Overall mortality was 23.0%, mainly due to sepsis and malignancy. Conclusion: Patients with defects in RAC2-associated regulators of actin usually present with late-onset symptoms due to normal immune profiles, but a higher rate of EBV and HPV infections, autoimmune cytopenia, asthma, and lymphoproliferation compared to defects in the CDC42 pathway. The severity of mutations in patients of the CDC42 group helps to estimate the prognosis of the disease and prioritization of HSCT. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

Quality of life in patients undergoing lung resection: Evaluation of outcomes of follow-up using brief pain inventory

    No full text
Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate preoperative anxiety, postoperative pain and functional impairment using Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) in patients undergoing surgery for malignancy. Methods: Between September 2020 and May 2022, a total of 94 patients (60 males, 34 females; mean age 59.5 +/- 12.2 years; range, 32 to 84 years) who underwent surgery for lung cancer were prospectively analyzed. The patients were evaluated using the BPI preoperatively and on postoperative Days 0, 3, and 30. The preoperative emotional impacts of patient variables and the influence of surgical management on postoperative pain were examined. Results: Females experienced more preoperative emotional distress and insomnia (p=0.046, p=0.033, respectively). Patients diagnosed with cancer and had a history of surgery or thoracotomy demonstrated higher preoperative emotional distress (p=0.001, p= 10 cm (p=0.200, p=0.113, respectively). Conclusion: Our study results indicate that a preference for minimal invasive procedures, the use of a single thoracic drain, and the prompt removal of the drain minimize pain and functional impairment. Women, patients with a preoperative diagnosis of malignancy requiring metastasectomy, and history of thoracotomy or surgery experience elevated levels of anxiety. Therefore, consistent monitoring and psychological support may be recommended to improve the quality of life for this patient population

Molecular Characterization of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis and Canine Leishmaniasis Strains Isolated from Northern Cyprus and Their Clinical Reflections in Mice Models

    No full text
Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection caused by Leishmania species in tropical and subtropical regions. Cyprus, located in the Eastern Mediterranean basin, is considered endemic for leishmaniasis. In our study, we aimed to investigate the origins of two Leishmania strains isolated from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by sequencing and to establish in vivo animal models by examining the clinical reflections of these strains in mice. A biopsy material was taken from a seven-year-old girl with a lupoid lesion on her forehead and amastigotes were detected in the smears. Following culture of the specimen on enriched NNN media and detection of promastigotes, the patient was diagnosed with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) (no: 504). A four-year-old boxer dog was taken to a veterinary clinic with complaints of weight loss, weakness, hair loss and lymphadenopathy. A blood sample was taken from the dog, cultured in enriched NNN media and canine leishmaniasis (CanL) was diagnosed with the growth of promastigotes (no: 753). Leishmania promastigotes obtained from CL and CanL cases were cryopreserved and stored in the Parasite Bank, Manisa Celal Bayar University. When the isolates were to be used, they were transferred to RPMI-1640 medium and grown to the concentration of 10(7) promastigotes/mL required for the study. The isolates were identified to the species level using primers specific for ITS-1 and cpb E/F regions of Leishmania. A phylogenetic tree was constructed according to the data obtained from the sequence analysis. In addition to the Northern Cyprus Leishmania isolates for in vivo studies, one each of Leishmania donovani (MLd) and Leishmania tropica (MLt) isolates from Manisa were included for comparison. Eight study groups and two control groups (uninfected) were formed with five Mus musculus (Balb/c) mice in each group (total 10 groups and 50 Balb/c mice). Four mouse study groups were separately used with MLt, 753, MLd and 504 strains to establish the CL animal model. The other four mice groups were used for the VL animal model with the same strains. In addition, one group each for the CL and VL models was used as a negative control group. Mice in the CL groups were infected with 100 mu L of the prepared promastigote suspension on the sole of the right foot intradermally and the width and height of the sole of the foot were measured weekly for six weeks. Mice in VL groups were infected with 100 mu L promastigote suspension intraperitoneally and VL symptoms were monitored. Thirty days after the injection, the spleen and liver were removed by autopsy and their sizes were measured. In our study, one of the two Northern Cyprus Leishmania isolates molecularly characterised was Leishmania donovani (human strain, no: 504) and the other was Leishmania tropica (canine strain, no: 753). Mice in the CL and VL groups developed symptoms of CL and VL, respectively, and both Manisa and Northern Cyprus isolates had similar reflections in mice. In the literature, it is reported that Leishmania infantum is the causative agent of CanL cases in Northern Cyprus. However, according to our study, L.tropica may also be the source of CanL infections in the island. In addition, it was observed that Northern Cyprus isolates caused both CL and VL infections in mice and it was concluded that they can be used in future in vivo studies

Artificial intelligence is a technology which carries the potential to create revolutions in many areas including education. In the field of education, artificial intelligence has begun to be used in processes such as personalizing learning processes, analyzing student data, and providing support to teachers. However, the effects of this new technology on education and teacher canditates’ attitudes towards it have not been fully comprehended yet. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the attitudes and anxiety levels of prospective teachers towards artificial intelligence in terms of gender, the field of teaching, grade level, and experience through descriptive survey research. According to the findings, prospective teachers with AI experience attribute the AI to a role that will do the work for them and trust the outputs. However, some prospective teachers see the AI as an assistant and feel the need to check their answers. According to the results obtained, male teacher candidates have more positive attitudes than female teacher candidates, while female candidates have higher anxiety levels. In addition, having experience with artificial intelligence has a positive effect on attitude and reduces the anxiety level. The field of teaching and the level of the class does not create a significant difference in the attitude and anxiety levels of teacher candidates. As a result of the findings, it is recommended that courses on artificial intelligence should be added to teaching programs and that female teacher candidates should be encouraged to use artificial intelligence.
