Long-Term Outcomes of Surgical and Chemical Matricectomy for Ingrown Toenail Management: A Retrospective Study
Introduction: Matricectomy is an effective treatment method for ingrown toenails. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of matricectomy procedures for ingrown toenails at a dermatology clinic, focusing on patient characteristics, recurrence rates, post-operative complications, and patient satisfaction. Methods: Patient records from 2009 to 2023 for those undergoing surgical or chemical matricectomy for ingrown toenails in the dermatological surgery unit were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The study analyzed 300 matricectomies performed on 164 patients. Chemical matricectomy was performed on 97.6% (160 patients), while 2.4% (4 patients) underwent surgical matricectomy alone, and 20.7% (34 patients) received both surgical and chemical matricectomy. Healing times and prolonged pain showed no significant differences between surgical, sodium hydroxide, and phenol matricectomy. No significant relationship was identified between side effect development and factors such as diabetes mellitus, previous nail procedures, or the type of matricectomy (surgical, phenol, or sodium hydroxide). Recurrence rates ranked from lowest to highest as follows: combined surgical and chemical, sodium hydroxide, and phenol matricectomy; however, these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusions: No significant difference was observed in recurrence rates, side effects, or patient satisfaction between surgical, sodium hydroxide, and phenol matricectomy procedures
The Potato Clones Selected for High and Low Plant Yield in the F1 Generation of Atlantic × 101 (Nif) Cross
The study aimed to compare the performances of clones selected for high low single plant yield in the greenhouse growing in the progeny test run in seedbed growing. A total of 104 plants were randomly selected among 1104 F1 plants and tuber yield of each plant was measured and the tubers were kept as clone. Assuming a normal distribution, the truncated selection was applied at the highest (Q1) and lowest (Q4) quartiles of the normal distribution at the s = 0.05; 0.10; 0.15; 0.20 and 0.25 selection pressures. Clones selected were grown in a seedbed nursery as progeny testing. The results can be summarized as follows: The progeny population could be separated into two distinct groups with mean values of 5.16 g and 1.35 g, at the s = 0.25 selection pressure. In the greenhouse the highest quartile at the s = 0.05 selection pressure had the highest mean of 6.40 g and reduced to 5.16 g at the 0.25 level. In the lowest quartile the lowest mean was 0.60 g at the s = 0.05 level and increased up to 1.35 g in the s = 0.25 level. The highest quartile (Q1) had the mean 49.51 g at s = 0.05 and reduced to 35.53 g in the s = 0.25. The lowest mean was obtained in the lowest quartile (Q4) at the s = 0.05 with a value of 24.30 g and increased up to 33.85 g at the s = 0.25 level. The highest amount of the difference between the highest and the lowest selection was obtained as 25.21 g at the s = 0.05 pressure level in the seedbeds. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
Due to their complex structures, working with biological membranes is quite challenging. As an alternative to studying biological membranes, model membranes, which possess nearly identical properties but allow for controlled manipulation of component types and concentrations, are frequently utilized. This approach facilitates a clearer understanding of the effects of agents on membranes. The molecular-level effects and interactions of agents with model membranes can be determined through experiments conducted in laboratories using various techniques. Furthermore, theoretical calculations of these effects and interactions can be performed using molecular dynamics software. In addition to these two methods, model membrane structures can also be analyzed using image processing techniques facilitated by computer software. The images analyzed are obtained through multiple microscopic imaging methods. This enables the interaction of several drugs, at different concentrations, with model membranes to be visualized and analyzed through various approaches. In this thesis, the effects of selected agents on model membranes were investigated by employing a combination of experimental, theoretical, and image processing methods, depending on varying concentrations. As a result of these analyses, significant insights were obtained to enhance the understanding of potential effects and interactions within model membrane systems

As a result of the analysis, although the order of sensitivity is Kepler, TESS and SuperWASP, and the most sensitive parameters are obtained from the Kepler Space Telescope observations, ground-based telescopes and space telescopes stand out with their qualitatively different features compared to each other
Flow diversion for distal cerebral aneurysms: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background Flow diverters (FDs) are increasingly used off-label for distal cerebral aneurysms (DCAs), those located at or beyond the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) A2, middle cerebral artery M2, and posterior cerebral artery P2 segments. However, data on their safety and efficacy remain limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizes current evidence on FD treatment for DCAs.Methods A comprehensive search was performed across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, including studies with >= 5 patients reporting FD treatment of DCAs. Efficacy outcomes included adequate and complete aneurysm occlusion and retreatment rates. Safety outcomes included good functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score 0-2), procedure-related morbidity, mortality, complications, in-stent stenosis, and covered branch occlusion at follow-up. Pooled analyses with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were conducted using a random-effects model. Results Eighteen studies (441 patients, 70% women; mean age: 57.2 +/- 13.6 years) with 445 DCAs were included. Most aneurysms were unruptured (93.7%) and located in the ACA territory (78.4%). Adequate and complete occlusion at last follow-up were 90% (95% CI, 86 to 95) and 79% (95% CI, 74 to 85), respectively. The retreatment rate was 1.6% (95% CI, 0.2 to 3). Good functional outcome was achieved in 97% (95% CI, 95 to 99). Procedure-related complications occurred in 9% (95% CI, 5 to 13), with morbidity and mortality of 1.5% and 0.6%, respectively. In-stent stenosis and covered branch occlusion rates were 3% (95% CI, 0 to 8) and 5.5% (95% CI, 2 to 9), respectively. Conclusion FDs appear to be safe and effective for DCAs, with high occlusion rates and low retreatment and complication rates
NREM Sleep Oscillations Are Associated With Anxiety and Negative Affect in Young Adults
Non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) oscillations are critical for cognitive and affective processing. While several studies link anxiety and depression symptoms to sleep quality, a critical gap remains in elucidating the role of NREM physiology in sleep-dependent processing of affect and anxiety symptoms. The goals of the present study were to investigate sleep-dependent consolidation of emotional memory and the relations of NREM oscillations with state anxiety and affect upon awakening in a non-clinical sample enriched for trait anxiety. Forty-two participants were recruited from a larger cohort of college students based on self-reported high (> 2 SD cohort mean, n = 26) versus moderate-low levels of trait anxiety (< 2 SD cohort mean, n = 16) for a 2-h polysomnography monitored mid-day nap. Memory for negative and neutral picture stimuli was tested over this nap interval. Sleep spindles and slow oscillations (SOs) predicted post-nap state anxiety and negative affect. Importantly, these were independent relationships in opposing directions such that higher SO activity was associated with reduced negative affect and state anxiety, whereas spindle activity correlated with higher negative affect and anxiety. We observed significantly reduced SO activity in the high-anxiety group but no associations of anxiety with macro-features of sleep (sleep duration, latency, efficiency or stage distributions). There were no group differences in emotional memory, nor did sleep parameters correlate with memory performance. These findings reflect that NREM oscillations are uniquely sensitive to both trait and state level variability in anxiety and highlight their potential as a novel target to attenuate anxiety and negative affect.National Institute of Mental Health; National Institute of General Medical Sciences [T32GM108540, T32GM149386]; [K01MH114012]This work was supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (K01MH114012) to Bengi Baran. A New Unc45a 5'utr Variant In Patients With Aagenaes Syndrome
Aagenaes syndrome, also known as lymphoedema cholestasis syndrome 1 (LCS1), is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by neonatal cholestasis and chronic lymphedema, primarily affecting the lower extremities. The genetic basis for this syndrome was recently linked to a variant in the 5 '-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of the UNC45A gene, located on chromosome 15q. This study aimed to identify the genetic mutations associated with Aagenaes syndrome in two siblings and to explore their clinical implications. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was conducted on two siblings with neonatal cholestasis and lymphedema. WES identified a single base pair change in the 5 '-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of the UNC45A gene (c.-88G>A) in both siblings. Additionally, both were heterozygous for an exonic loss-of-function variant (c.1591C>T; p.Arg531Ter) in UNC45A. Clinically, both siblings presented with neonatal cholestasis and lymphedema; however, one sibling developed severe liver failure, requiring a liver transplant. Despite carrying the same variants, the clinical outcomes differed between the two patients. The identification of a novel 5'-UTR variant (c.-88G>A), along with an exonic variant in UNC45A, expands the genetic and clinical understanding of Aagenaes syndrome. This study confirms the involvement of the 5'-UTR region of UNC45A in the disease pathogenesis, while demonstrating that Aagenaes syndrome is not exclusively associated with the previously reported c.-98G>T variant found in Norwegian cases. These findings underscore the importance of genetic screening for accurate diagnosis and management of Aagenaes syndrome and provide new insights into the critical regulatory role of the 5'-UTR in disease development. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying phenotypic variability in this rare disorder. Evaluation of mRNA and protein levels would have been valuable to better understand the functional effects of these variants; however, due to current resource constraints, such studies could not be conducted
Staphylococcus aureus as a signature species of skin microbiome in actinic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma: A narrative review
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common type of skin cancer and the second most common type of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Actinic keratosis (AK) is a premalignant lesion that can progress to cSCC over time. AK and cSCC are associated with microbial dysbiosis and an increased abundance of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Although AK and cSCC are highly colonized with S. aureus, a bacterium of the skin microbiota, it is not yet known whether this bacterium is associated with cancer development. Here, we analyze the studies on the relationship between S. aureus and keratinocytic skin neoplasia, evaluating the contribution of S. aureus to the development and prognosis of cSCC and AK lesions. The overabundance of S. aureus and the compounds secreted by this bacterium can induce cancer-promoting changes in skin cells. The presence of high amounts of certain S. aureus strains in premalignant skin lesions may constitute a protumorigenic stimulus by inducing oxidative stress and DNA damage and downregulating DNA repair mechanisms. S. aureus associated with AK and cSCC can trigger keratinocytes to produce inflammatory cytokines typically upregulated in cSCC. These circumstances also suggest a potential specific involvement of S. aureus in the progression from AK to cSCC
Beyond single-analyte detection: Advancing molecularly imprinted polymers for simultaneous multi-target sensing
Molecular imprinting in polymers is one of the most rapidly growing trends in chemical sensing, offering high stability and selectivity for target analytes. Delving into the synthesis methods and highlighting innovations that enable the simultaneous determination of multiple analytes, we extensively and critically reviewed herein the advancements in multi-analyte molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) sensors applied in various fields. The fundamentals of MIP-based electrochemical and optical sensors featuring hybrid recognition systems, as well as the challenges related to removing templates from MIPs, separation of detection signals, and upscaling for commercialization, are deeply discussed. Moreover, considering the potential of MIPs as efficient platforms for multi-target sensing, we provide insight into the critical aspects that hinder the MIP sensors from crossing laboratory borders. By identifying recent progress and persistent challenges, the current review serves as a guide for advancing MIP-based sensing platforms for multiple target analytes recognizing across medical, pharmaceutical, and environmental domains.Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw (Poland)W.K. thanks the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw (Poland) for financial support through the institu-tional core funds
