This MA thesis discusses disciplinary concepts in history teaching and provides specific examples of activities that can be used for developing students' historical thinking. Therefore, the main goal of this thesis is summarized in two questions: What do disciplinary concepts in history imply in Croatia and the rest of the world? How to teach disciplinary concepts to develop students' historical thinking? The first part of the paper considers the historical development of the idea of concepts as the foundation of meaningful learning. This is followed by a more detailed analysis of the emergence of concepts in history teaching in Croatia and other countries, with an emphasis on disciplinary concepts. Then, the paper considers what is meant by disciplinary concepts in history teaching today by analyzing primarily the Canadian and British models of historical thinking, as well as the Croatian history curriculum. The thesis analyzes selected disciplinary concepts – time and space, cause and consequence, change and continuity, historical perspective, evidence/historical sources, and historical significance. The second part of the thesis provides examples of general methods and strategies for teaching disciplinary concepts, along with specific teaching activities that can be used for developing students' historical thinking. This paper thus serves as a guide to the theory and practice of disciplinary concepts

– 1990.) i novim naseljima (1991. – danas). Cities in the 21st century face various challenges. To address them, international and European urban strategies emphasise improving the quality of life at the city and local community level, with housing playing a key role. Documents like the New Leipzig Charter envision socially sustainable cities of the future, which can be achieved by improving the physical and social aspects of quality of life in neighbourhoods and housing estates. Quality of life is a complex, interdisciplinary concept that can be studied through multiple dimensions. In the context of Croatia and Zagreb, there is a long tradition of researching the quality of life and housing, which this dissertation builds upon and contributes to. This dissertation examines the social aspects of quality of life in Zagreb's housing estates from the socialist and post-socialist periods, the so-called old estates (built 1945 – 1990) and new estates (built 1991 – present). The first period is characterised by planned housing development of large, well-equipped housing estates with good public infrastructure, carried out by the state. The second period is marked by the transition to market capitalism and the privatisation of housing, resulting in the construction of apartments without urbanistically planned accompanying public spaces and institutions. Since these two types of estates were built under different political and economic systems, differences in quality of life between them are expected. The aim is to analyse selected social aspects of the estates, including social mix, neighbourly relations, place attachment, participation, and public spaces. Additionally, the study seeks to identify differences between old and new estates and examine how these social aspects contribute to overall satisfaction with the estate. To address the three research questions, a mixed-methods approach is used, combining survey data from a sample of 661 residents of Zagreb’s housing estates with qualitative data from focus groups, walking interviews, and observations of public spaces. Regarding the socio-demographic structure (social mix) of the estates, although socialist-era housing estates have a slightly higher proportion of older residents, they are neither demographically nor socially homogeneous, and there is currently no risk of segregation. The population structure in both types of estates remains stable, as residents are generally satisfied and do not plan to move, reducing the risk of ghettoisation seen in some neighbourhoods of Western European cities. This study aligns with other research in post-socialist countries, which highlights social mix as a positive aspect of large housing estates built after World War II. This conclusion also applies to post-socialist estates. The social cohesion (neighbourly relations and place attachment) in Zagreb's estates is also at a satisfactory level. Various forms and levels of neighbourly relationships were identified, ranging from casual acquaintances and occasional conversations to cooperation, socialising, and friendships. Most residents know their neighbours only superficially, and distant neighbourly relations are often perceived as the norm in urban environments. Social interactions are particularly strong among parents of young children, long-term residents, and dog owners, indicating that shared activities can foster closer relationships within the neighbourhood. However, disagreements among residents also exist, most commonly related to building maintenance. Despite the changes brought by digital technologies, solidarity and helping neighbours, as well as spending time and socialising in public spaces, remain important in both types of estates. Old estates are characterised by a stronger emotional attachment of residents to the estate and a stronger group identity (especially in the housing estates of New Zagreb), which was developed through the long-term, multi-generational residence of inhabitants in the estates. In new housing estates, community bonds are primarily based on socio-demographic similarities among residents (e.g., similar family situations, connections through children) and shared interests in preserving the quality of life in their local community and neighbourhood. The level of participation is low in both types of estates, with most residents not participating in decision-making processes regarding their estates. Some of the reasons for the low level of participation identified in this study include disappointment and distrust in the system, as well as a feeling of powerlessness in influencing decisions regarding the estate. Another contributing factor could be a lack of knowledge and education about the participatory process, which, according to the literature, is common in post-socialist countries with a shorter democratic history. Qualitative research also revealed that participation can be encouraged through a strong place attachment and the community's social capital. However, a major obstacle to participation is that local councils, as the main actors at the local level, fail to engage with residents, while council representatives face numerous challenges. Quantitative and qualitative research confirms that participants consider public spaces, especially green areas, essential to their quality of life and wish to preserve them in their neighbourhoods. Residents of older housing estates are significantly more satisfied with public spaces than those in newer estates, reaffirming that green areas are one of the key advantages of socialist-era housing estates. Post-socialist housing estates lack public spaces, but residents of older estates also perceive public spaces in their neighbourhoods as threatened due to excessive construction. According to participants, public spaces in the estates could be improved by enhancing equipment, better maintenance and cleaning of existing areas, and creating enclosed publicly accessible gathering places, especially for the younger generation. Participants generally feel safe in public spaces, which is also a key criterion for their quality that should be continuously maintained and improved. The most important social aspects explaining high satisfaction with the estate in Zagreb are solidarity amongst neighbours, place attachment, and satisfaction with public spaces. The multiple linear regression model confirmed that both the physical aspects of public infrastructure and social aspects are key to overall housing satisfaction in the neighbourhood. Throughout the study, we demonstrate that these aspects are inseparable – public infrastructure is essential for achieving a good quality of life and successful and fulfilling social interactions within the neighbourhood. Therefore, attention should be paid to the accessibility and quality of public and social infrastructure for renewal of old estates and planning new ones. In conclusion, improving public and green spaces, creating gathering places, and preserving good neighbourly relations, high place attachment, and a sense of community are essential for maintaining the existing quality of life in both old and new housing estates in Zagreb

U suvremenom dobu u kojem personalizirano zdravlje postaje imperativ, generički pristupi prehrani i vježbanju pokazuju značajna ograničenja, što dovodi do niske dugoročne stope pridržavanja korisnika. In the modern era where personalized health is becoming an imperative, generic approaches to nutrition and exercise show significant limitations, leading to low long-term user adherence rates. This paper provides a detailed account of the architecture and development of an innovative web application for personalized nutrition and fitness counseling, which aims to overcome these challenges by applying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technologies. The application was developed using the Python Flask framework and offers a holistic approach that integrates the tracking of exercise, nutrition, water intake, and mental state. The central innovation of the application is a conversational AI assistant, implemented as a virtual coach, which is based on the Meta Llama 3 large language model. The model's execution is powered by the Groq inference engine, whose Language Processing Unit (LPU) architecture ensures exceptionally low latency and fluid, real-time interaction. Initial personalized recommendations are generated by a rule-based expert system, considering the user's goals, fitness level, and available equipment. By analyzing user input through Natural Language Processing (NLP), the application also offers support in managing emotional eating. Finally, the paper proposes and elaborates on a future development direction, emphasizing a transition from the static recommendation system to a dynamic model based on Reinforcement Learning, which would create a system that continuously learns and adapts based on implicit and explicit user feedback

No, najvjerojatnije se radilo o prijevodima stranih djela. The aim of this thesis is to present the publishing series Library for Teachers (1871–1943) and to highlight its significance for the development of pedagogical literature in Croatia. The first chapter provides a brief overview of teacher education at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. Teachers at the time were in a difficult material and social position, which led them to organize in order to protect and advance their rights. The following chapter focuses on the first professional association of teachers, the Croatian Pedagogical and Literary Association. It describes its founding, the institutions it established, and its publishing activities. The Association was the most important publisher of pedagogical literature in the 19th century. The central part of the thesis presents the publishing series Library for Teachers, which includes 55 books covering various fields of pedagogy. This series featured numerous European pedagogical classics as well as many original works by Croatian authors. Among the domestic works, the pedagogical textbooks by Stjepan Basariček stand out in particular, as they were used in Croatian teacher-training schools for approximately 50 years. The final chapter provides a brief overview of pedagogical literature published outside the Library for Teachers series. Before the launch of this series, future teachers primarily used translations of foreign textbooks. Later, a few pedagogical textbooks were published in Croatian, although they were most likely translations of foreign works. The first pedagogical textbook by a Croatian author, Gojitba i obća učba (Upbringing and General Education) (S. Novotny), was published in 1867 and remained in use until it was replaced by Basariček’s textbooks. The Croatian Pedagogical and Literary Association played a key role in the development of pedagogical literature in Croatia. The translations of European pedagogical classics inspired Croatian teachers to write original pedagogical works, thereby laying the foundations for the development of pedagogical literature in Croatia

Rad predlaže moguća poboljšanja u cilju jačanja čitateljske kulture i digitalne dostupnosti knjižničnih usluga. The paper analyzes the role of librarian annotations in the digital catalog of the Zagreb City Library as a tool for informing and encouraging reading. Through selected examples from fiction, children's literature and popular science material, the style, function and content of annotations and the way they contribute to the user experience are explored. Annotations are seen as a bridge between the library collection and the reader, with special emphasis on their informative and promotional function. The results indicate a high-quality level of expression and clarity of messages, but also room for additional development in the direction of thematic categorization, multimedia and user interaction. The paper proposes possible improvements in order to strengthen the reading culture and the digital availability of library services

Psycholinguistic and Affective Variables of Metaphorical Sentences in L2 Speakers of English

Metaphors are complex and often pose difficulties for second language learners. This thesis investigates how Croatian learners of English as a second language perceive metaphorical meaning, with the aim of comparing their ratings of metaphorical, literal, and concrete sentences to those of native English speakers. A total of 124 undergraduate students of English at the University of Zagreb participated in the questionnaire. They rated six sentence triplets, a total of 18 sentences, based on their level of metaphoricity and familiarity. The results revealed that Croatian L2 speakers of English did not differ significantly from native English speakers in their metaphoricity ratings. Participants consistently distinguished metaphorical sentences from their literal and concrete counterparts, indicating an intuitive awareness of figurative meaning. No systematic correlation was found between metaphoricity and familiarity ratings, nor did reading habits or choice of majors significantly influence outcomes. These findings suggest that advanced Croatian learners of English possess a metaphorical competence comparable to that of native speakers, which may stem from high language proficiency and conceptual transfer between L1 and L2. The study contributes to psycholinguistic research on metaphor processing and highlights the importance of metaphor awareness in second language acquisition. Future research is encouraged to expand to broader participant groups and a wider range of metaphor types.

    Eighteenth century palaces in Rijeka

Osamnaesto stoljeće Rijeci donosi status slobodne luke po odluci cara Karla VI. 1719. godine, a 60 godina kasnije, odlukom carice Marije Terezije, i status zasebnog tijela (Corpus separatum adnexum) Ugarske Krune.

    Autorefleksivnost u suvremenome Hollywoodu

The thesis analyses two films – Damien Chazelle’s Babylon (2022) and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) – in terms of how they employ mythopoetical discourse to engage with and interpret Hollywood history. Both films are so-called backstudio pictures, that is, films about film industry that simultaneously mystify and demystify Hollywood. Erich Auerbach’s theory of the figural interpretation of history and Roland Barthes’ writings on myth and literature provide the basic theorical framework through which the films are approached. On the one hand, Babylon, which recounts the story of the advent of sound technology to Hollywood as its foundational narrative, draws on Biblical mythological discourse to establish Hollywood history as a sequence of repetitive crises and (sacrificial) figures, all of which are presented as historical entities which are to be understood in terms of spiritual sameness. Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, on the other hand, foregrounds Hollywood’s mythology as decidedly transatlantic by emphasizing the “intrusion” of European influences in 1960s Hollywood; it simultaneously mythologizes its counterfactual history by naturalizing it. Moreover, it establishes Sharon Tate as the lynchpin of different mythopoetical and fictional templates which haunt her biography, such as Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891) and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby (1968). In this fashion, she is both the privileged figure of mythification, and a figure which emphatically brings the film’s mythology into question. The bridge between Tarantino’s and Chazelle’s films is the casting of Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt as the protagonists. Both appear to bear similar iconic value, especially perhaps Robbie as Tate (and as Tess). Hardy’s figural identification of Tess with the Babylonian aristocratic family of the d’Urbervilles via Tate/Robbie proposes a spiritual understanding between the two films’ constructions of stardom and of Hollywood as a destructive milieu

The topic of this thesis is an anthropological analysis of the chants and songs performed by the organized supporter group Bad Blue Boys during the matches of the football club GNK Dinamo. The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of specific chants and songs and analyze them as expressions of verbal and moral support for the club, which carry deeper meanings. Furthermore, the study explores the representation of the group through the use of language, specific rituals, and practices associated with fan support. This includes gatherings before matches, the performance of certain body movements during chanting, and the timing and context in which specific chants are shouted. The research also looks into the process of creating these chants and songs, as well as the sources of inspiration behind their composition
