History of construction and adaptation of the First Požega Savings Bank building into a city library
zagrebački arhitektonski ured Hönigsberg i Deutsch.
Rad prati povijesni razvoj Knjižnice i
zgrade, prolazeći kroz faze djelovanja i korištenja, od njezine izgradnje početkom 20. stoljeća, te donosi
informacije o zahvatima provedenim u 21. stoljeću, od adaptacije prostora do nadogradnje. Pregled
djelovanja ustanove Knjižnice prikazuje njezin značaj u razvoju grada te promoviranju i održavanju
kulturnog i prosvjetnog karaktera u zajednici tijekom cijelog svog vijeka. Pokretanje adaptacije
adaptacije i dogradnje.
This thesis provides an overview of the urban development of the central part of the city of Požega. From a medieval settlement at the foot of the mountain to a modern city, Požega has gone through significant development phases and changes over the centuries that have shaped the city's image and its spatial identity. The building of the former First Požega Savings Bank, designed by the famous Zagreb architectural office Hönigsberg und Deutsch, is also recognized as part of this identity. Over time, the Požega City Library, one of the city's iconic cultural institutions gradually moved into the building. This thesis follows the historical development of the building that today is the seat of the city library, going through the phases of operation and use:from its construction in the early 20th century, and provides information on the interventions carried out in the 21st century, from the renovation and reconstruction of the space to the contemporary architectural extension. An overview of the library's work shows its significance in the development of the city and the promotion and maintenance of the cultural and educational character in the community throughout its lifetime. The initiation of the renovation of the historicist building with Art Nouveau features and the addition of a modern annex were studied through the adaptive reuse project. In the end, the contribution that the institution and its space have to the life of the community was examined
Motivational Factors in Adult Learners of French as a Foreign Language: A Comparative Analysis of Motivation Between Beginner and Intermediate Language Proficiency Levels
Statističke analize potvrđuju porast intrinzične motivacije kod naprednijih učenika, osobito u pogledu radoznalosti, osobnog zadovoljstva i povezanosti s jezikom i kulturom.

This diploma thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (Skyfaring: A Journey with a Pilot; On Freedom; The Great Hippotamus Hotel), and two from Croatian into English (Mali i Levijatan; Priča sa zapadne strane: Tipologija srednjebrončanodobnog keramičkog materijala s prostora zapadne Slavonije). In the commentary, many different translation aspects were discussed, and always in relation to the target reader. However, seeing as four out of the five translated sources were literary texts, special attention was paid to their aesthetic function and effect. In this thesis, both of these were attempted to be preserved by a careful semantic consideration. Furthermore, since all five texts contained many cultural references, the commentary also focused on the translation of culturally specific items, and their appropriate translation procedures. The three golden rules in all of these translations were the following: make the translated text glide naturally in the target language, keep the original function and effect of the source text in the translation, and never make choices that would obstruct the reading process in any way.
Revitalisation of the Transformation of energy department exhibition at the Technical museum Nikola Tesla in Zagreb
The subject of this paper is the conception of the presentation and interpretation of the part of the permanent exhibition of the Technical Museum Nikola Tesla, the Department of Transformation of Energy. The introductory part of this paper briefly describes the subject of the paper, after which the Transformation of Energy Department itself is described in the context of other departments in the Museum since its establishment during the first opening of the Museum to the public, its history and the current state before the renovation of the contents.
A remedial evaluation of the department was then conducted using four methods: a focus group with Museum staff, a visitor survey, a review of the guest book, and a review of similar departments in other science and technology museums, which included a review of departments in five selected museums: the Technical Museum in Vienna, the Technical Museum in Brno, the Deutsches Museum, the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology, and the Danish Energy Museum (Energimuseet).
The final part describes the method of presentation and interpretation after the renovation of the content in most of the department, in the following sections: introduction, Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Water Energy and Water Turbines, and Steam Engines. The renovation was carried out by introducing new thematic and subject legends, adding models from the storage rooms, and reintroducing the possibility of moving some exhibits by visitors.
The conclusion provides guidelines for further action, which primarily concern the remaining part of the Internal Combustion Engine and the continuation of the introduction of interactive elements throughout the Department
Lektura prijevodnih tekstova neizvornih govornika
This paper analyses the proofreading of translated texts produced by non-native speakers of Croatian, using examples from several years of translation work by native speakers of Slovenian. These translators are former students of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, who studied Croatian language and literature at the Department of Slavic Studies as part of the joint pre-Bologna program Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian Languages and Literatures. The analysed corpus includes texts by both graduate and non-graduate translators. The source languages of the texts were Slovenian (7 texts), English (2 texts), and German (1 text). The content predominantly consists of online texts created by private companies and associations aiming to present their work, products, and services effectively and professionally to clients on the Croatian market. The theoretical foundations of the paper draw on the normative aspects and functional styles of the Croatian standard language, as well as a contrastive linguistic approach to studying Croatian and Slovenian. Similar research was previously conducted by Prof. Dr. Vesna Požgaj Hadži in 1987 and 1998 at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. The paper identifies linguistic errors and presents editorial suggestions for corrections. Linguistic errors are categorized, and their potential causes are examined in greater detail. The findings indicate that some errors stem from the influence of Slovenian as the translators’ native language, others from interference with Serbian, and some are comparable to errors made by native speakers of Croatian. A smaller portion of the errors are unintentional slips, often resulting from fatigue or other subjective factors related to the translation process. This analysis may serve as a foundation for a future Croatian-Slovenian language guide and as instructional material for textbooks, workbooks, and other educational resources. The author proposes the establishment of a one-year specialist program in translation between Croatian and Slovenian, joint language seminars, summer and winter schools for translators and proofreaders, and deeper cultural cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The Introduction defines the topic and outlines the broader social (cultural, educational, economic, and diplomatic) context that influenced the research focus—namely, the analysis of types of linguistic errors in texts translated from Slovenian, English, and German into Croatian. The translators of these texts are non-native Croatian speakers who work professionally in translation from Slovenian and other foreign languages into Croatian.
The second chapter presents the main characteristics of Croatian as a communication system, as well as features of the Croatian standard language (phonological, morphological, derivational, syntactic, lexical, orthographic, and functional-stylistic) relevant to the application of language norms in translation and proofreading. It defines the core features of professional translation and proofreading, outlines the knowledge required of translators and proofreaders, and discusses the linguistic and extralinguistic challenges they commonly face. The chapter also addresses the linguistic kinship between Slovenian and Croatian, the status of Croatian in Slovenia, particularly in higher education, and the importance and value of contrastive linguistic research.
Chapter three describes the methodology used for linguistic analysis of the translated texts. It includes descriptive and tabular data on the translators and the texts analysed, and explains the procedure used, accompanied by a comprehensive list of language manuals available to proofreaders.
Chapter four, Results of the Linguistic Analysis, is the most extensive. It examines 10 translated texts selected for the study. Each text is briefly described (translators’ educational background, text length and content, source language), followed by a two-column format listing the identified linguistic errors on the left and the suggested or recommended corrections on the right (e.g., “materiala – materijala”; “sve igračke su ručno izrađene – sve su igračke ručno izrađene” / “sve su igračke izrađene ručno,” p. 29). Each text analysis concludes with a discussion of the individual editorial recommendations.
Chapter five (Discussion) summarizes and categorizes the identified linguistic errors in well-organized tables based on levels of the Croatian standard language. The errors are organized into nine tables corresponding to linguistic levels (orthographic, phonological, morphological, derivational, syntactic, lexical), with additional commentary explaining the common dilemmas that lead translators and proofreaders to deviate from standard norms.
The Conclusion summarizes the main insights of the study in relation to its initial aims and offers concrete recommendations for further research in Croatian translation, proofreading, and standard language norms. The author presents five suggestions for enhancing cooperation between Slovenian and Croatian educational, cultural, and economic institutions, emphasizing that translation and proofreading are not merely intralinguistic challenges, but also depend on favourable extralinguistic conditions that can support quality translation by native Slovenian speakers into Croatian as the target language.
Chapters seven and eight provide the list of references (60 bibliographic entries) and the printed (13 entries) and online (10 entries) sources used in the preparation of the thesis.
Chapter nine contains the ten translated texts analysed in the study, presented in both the original Slovenian and the Croatian translations
Comparative axiological analysis of Držić’s plays Grižula and Tirena
Aksiološka analiza teksta podrazumijeva analizu vrijednosti proizvedenih tekstom. An axiological analysis of the text entails the examination of values conveyed and constructed within that text. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the pastoral plays Grižula and Tirena by Marin Držić, with the aim of assessing the scope and applicability of the axiological approach. Methodologically, the plays were analysed in parallel, emphasizing similarities and/or differences on several textual levels, from the highest (suprasentential) to the lowest (lexical). The results demonstrated that, despite both works belonging to the genre of pastoral drama, Grižula and Tirena differ significantly. Unlike Tirena, Grižula required the establishment of two separate hierarchies of credibility due to the division between two distinct worlds. It was also found that the Christian ideologeme is more prominent in Tirena, which is evident even at the lexical level, where a more frequent use of lexemes from the semantic field of Christian theology was observed, lexemes that are only marginally present in Grižula. Furthermore, Tirena is dominated by lexis from the semantic field of Love, whereas Grižula predominantly features vocabulary related to the negative self-evaluation of dramatic characters. A comparison of these findings with existing interpretations of the semantics of Grižula and Tirena revealed that, although the axiological analysis did not produce entirely new insights, it did confirm all the key semantic observations and expanded upon them in certain areas with greater systematic precision. For example, the realistic and mythological layers of Grižula were analysed with equal attention, the complexity of Grižula's character was recognised, the ambivalence of the fairies in both plays was noted, including their use of language for mockery and manipulation, and the central role of the prologue in structuring the meaning of both plays was highlighted. These findings affirm the value of the axiological approach as an effective analytical tool for a comprehensive interpretation of literary texts
An automated approach to exploring the perception of libraries and librarians through sentiment and emotion analysis of subtitles
Rad istražuje percepciju knjižnica i knjižničara u popularnoj kulturi analizom sentimenta i emocija u titlovima serije The Librarians (2014). The thesis explores the perception of libraries and librarians in popular culture through sentiment and emotion analysis of subtitles from the television series The Librarians (2014). For this purpose, open-access language models were used to detect sentiment and emotions. Based on the output of eight sentiment models and an equal number of emotion models, aggregate representations of emotional tones were created per episode, along with a comparison of model performance. The data was structured at the sentence level, grouped by model. The results reveal differences between models and indicate a predominantly positive and emotionally stable portrayal of librarians. In addition to classification outcomes, the computational efficiency of model execution was also analysed, providing an assessment of their applicability in larger analytical systems. The findings confirm the hypothesis that librarians are portrayed positively, but they challenge the assumption of emotional detachment—on the contrary, the results suggest they are empathetic and caring. The study contributes to digital humanities and media representation research, while also offering a practical evaluation of model efficiency in the context of large-scale corpus analysis
Beyond nature and culture : overcoming the dualism of nature and culture in the work of Philippe Descola and Eduardo Vivieros de Castro
This paper will explore the possibility of a line of thinking in cultural anthropology that goes beyond the dualism of nature and culture. The starting point will consist of Descola's theory of four ontologies and Vivieros de Castro's perspectivism and multinaturalism. The common ground of these authors is the desire to overcome the dualism of nature and culture based on the relativistic premise presupposing the existence of one homogenous nature and a multiplicity of different cultures. By applying critical interpretation of literature, this paper will assess the similarities and differences between these authors regarding their approach to the subject matter, the significance and contributions of their work in the domain of anthropology, the potential broader implications, as well as limitations and criticisms. The aim of this paper is to discuss the possibility of overcoming the dualism of nature and culture in cultural anthropology
The impact of teaching materials on shaping the final presentation of croatian studies students
This paper analyzes the influence of teaching aids on final diploma presentations delivered by students of Croatian Studies. Through a theoretical framework and a review of student work, it investigates how various instructional tools — ranging from traditional to digital — affect the quality of presentations and audience engagement. The results indicate that students who utilize a diverse range of teaching aids produce better-structured and more interactive presentations, although digital tools are often not leveraged to their full potential. The paper highlights the significance of more comprehensive training for future teachers in the effective application of teaching aids within contemporary classroom environments
