    Treatment of large cutaneous facial hemangioma with ropranolol in a child with biliary atresia and esophageal varices

    Introduction: Biliary atresia (BA) is the most common cause of neonatal jaundice, for which surgery is indicated. It may lead to portal hypertension and esophageal varices. Sometimes, BA is related to other congenital anomalies and malformation, while a coexistence of BA with facial hemangioma has not been reported, yet. Infantile hemangioma is a childhood benign vascular tumor. Beta blocker has an effect on hemangioma and esophageal varices. Case Report: A 30-day-old girl with an infantile hemangioma was referred to Amirkola Children's Hospital. According to intraoperative cholangiography and liver biopsy information, BA was diagnosed. Also, she had a large infantile cutaneous hemangioma on her face. Portal hypertension and esophageal varices were diagnosed in her under observation. So, propranolol was prescribed for her. A year after that, her facial hemangioma was gradually getting better. Conclusions: association of BA with infantile cutaneous hemangioma is rare and cutaneous hemangioma can be treated by propranolol

    Clinical and denture-related characteristics in patients with epulis fissuratum: a retrospective 58 case series

    Introduction: Epulis fissuratum is one of the important denture-related mucosal lesions that occurs around the borders of an ill-fitting denture. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cases of epulis fissuratum admitted in the department of oral medicine, Kerman Dental School in relation to the demographic, denture-related and clinical findings. Materials &Methods: Medical files of all patients referred to the Department of Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology, Kerman Dental School, Iran from 1999 to 2014 were reviewed and 58 cases with the diagnosis of epulis fissuratum with complete and acceptable data were illustrated. Results: The frequency of epulis fissuratum was 2.9 % of the total number of pathologies. The disorder had been occurred predominantly in the sixth decade of life (41.4%) and more often among females (79.3%). The frequency of epulis fissuratum was higher for a length of denture use of more than 10 years. Patients reported pain associated with the lesion (70.6%). Conclusion: The knowledge of some facts, especially the quality of dentures and level of denture hygiene in patients with epulis fissuratum supports the importance of the prevention of the lesion, hence the dentists should instruct their patients who have worn dentures how to prevent this lesion

    Evaluation of neurovascular anatomical variations in maxillary anterior region in cone beam computed tomography images

    Introduction: Incisive foramen in the maxilla is the oral terminus of the nasopalatine canal. This region is important in implantology, Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the neurovascular anatomical variations in the maxillary anterior region, observed on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials &Methods: In this cross-sectional study, maxillary CBCT images from 200 patients (100 men, 100 women, average age 45.61±11.01) were evaluated in sagittal, axial and coronal sections and the following parameters were investigated: incisive canal diameter, shapes of canal, presence of accessory canal in the anterior palate and their location, thickness of buccal bone in the sections containing canal, patient's dental and periodontal status in terms of bone loss. Data were collected and analyzed using SPSS, V20. P≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: In sagittal view, the mean diameter of the canal was 2.36±0.69mm.Age and gender did not significantly influence the diameter. Morphological analysis of canal showed that 25% of them were hourglass-like,23.5% conical,22%funnel,27.5% cylindrical, 2% tree branch. Accessory canals were observed in 58 patients (29%) specially near to the canine region. The thickness of buccal bone plate was less in complete edentulous patients than others and also there was a significant relationship between bone loss and canal size in the hourglass and cylindrical shapes. Conclusion: In this study, the prevalence of accessory canals was relatively significant, so it seems essential to carry out cone beam computed tomography in this area for determining the canal morphology and dimensions before implant placement

    Relationship between thyroid stimulating hormone and metabolic syndrome in overweight/obese children

    Background: Background: Obesity, especially central obesity is related to many endocrine abnormalities, such as thyroid dysfunctions. Elevated levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is common in obese children, however, it is not clear if such condition is associated with increased cardiovascular risk factors. The study aimed to determine the association between levels of TSH in overweight and obese children with components of metabolic syndrome (Mets). Methods: The study sample included 197 overweight/obese 6-7 year old children in Tehran, Iran. Anthropometric (weight, waist circumference and height), metabolic (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and fasting blood glucose) and hormonal (TSH) variables, as well as blood pressure were measured. Mets was defined according to Cook definition. Results: Totally, 20.3% and 79.7% of children were overweight and obese, respectively. Elevated levels of TSH were diagnosed in 10 subjects (5.1%), while Mets was seen in 35.4%. The most frequent component of Mets was abdominal obesity (72.5%). A weak positive correlation between BMI for age, Z scores and TSH level (r =0.11, P value= 0.123) was observed only in girls (r=0.2, P value= 0.034). TSH was not associated with components of Mets. Conclusion: Elevated TSH levels may be found in obese children; however, the association between TSH elevation and cardiovascular disease risk factors, including components of metabolic syndrome needs further investigation

    Phototherapy motivates protein and lipid oxidation in jaundiced term and late term neonates

    Background: Hyperbilirubinemia is one of the most important complications encountered in neonatal units. It has been proposed that phototherapy yields oxidative stress. Therefore, this study was undertaken to survey the levels of antioxidant and oxidative stress in the serum of neonates before and after phototherapy. Methods: This study was performed on thirty-five healthy, late preterm (>35 weeks) and term newborns aged 6-10 days, who underwent phototherapy due to hyperbilirubinemia (>14.00 mg/dL). Infants with a congenital malformation, birth asphyxia, sepsis, signs and symptoms suggestive of severe illness, and receiving phototherapy before recruitment to the study were excluded. Blood samples were taken to determine total serum bilirubin, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of serum, malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) as markers of the intensity of oxidative stress and inflammation with photometric methods, reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH) by HPLC-UV as well as the ratio of them before and after phototherapy. Results: TAC, GSH and bilirubin levels were significantly lower after phototherapy than before it, but reversely about levels of MDA, AOPP and oxidized GSH in addition to the ratio of reduced to oxidized GSH (p<0.05-0.001). AOPP and MDA showed a high negative correlation with bilirubin (respectively R=-0.985 and -0.986, p<0.001)) while vice versa about TAC and GSH (R=0.975 and 0.988, P<0.001). Conclusion: Phototherapy induces oxidative stress and inflammation not only due to the elevation of protein and lipid oxidation but also with reducing of antioxidant markers of serum

    Study the pattern of citation indicators among researchers at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences: Feasibility of predicting citation indicators

    Background and aim: Today, the extraction of scientometric indicators has been widely used in prediction of the scientific status of researchers, organizations and countries in various national and international fields. The aim of this study was to determine the participation in the production of science and partnership pattern of researchers in Hamedan University of Medical Sciences based on the databases of Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google Scholar. Material and methods: This applied and scientometric study was conducted on 100 top researchers of ISI in terms of the number of articles in 2014. The number of articles, citations and h-index were extracted from WoS, Scopus and Google Scholar from 2012 to 2014. Data were analyzed using SPSS, Stata and R. Findings: The number of publications and citations has increased over three years in three databases. The correlation between the number of publications in Google Scholar and the number of citations in WoS and Scopus was weak but significant. Negative binomial regression model indicated that the number of publications would be enhanced 7% in WoS and Scopus through the increase of one article in Google Scholar. Zero-inflation negative binomial model illustrated that odds of zero of the citation number in Scopus and WoS will be 0.66 and 0.27 times with increasing one article in Google Scholar and the citation number of Scopus and WOS is increased 2% and 3% with the increase of one article in Google Scholar, respectively. Conclusion: The results show that there is a direct and strong relationship among the number of publications, citations and h-index in three databases. Negative binomial model can be used as a proper model for the number of publications and zero-inflation negative binomial model can be applied as an appropriate model for the number of citations in WoS and Scopus, too

    Factors Associated with the Research Anxiety among Faculties of Knowledge and Information Science Departments of Iranian Universities

    Background and aim: The present study was conducted to determine the factors associated with the research anxiety among the faculties of knowledge and information science departments of Iranian universities. Material and methods: The study sample consisted of all full-time faculties working in the knowledge and information science departments of Iranian universities (181 individuals) in the academic year of 2013-2014. Among them, 139 participants had good cooperation in filling out the questionnaire. In this survey-analytical study, data were collected using Higgins-Kotrlik research anxiety inventory. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20. Findings: The results showed that about 63% of the respondents had high anxiety level and the remaining (37%) had the moderate level of anxiety. The results of the correlation tests revealed that two predictor variables of teaching skills and environmental factors had a negative significant relationship with the research anxiety. The results of the regression analysis indicated that the components of these two variables could explain 38% of the variance of anxiety research. Conclusion: The findings illustrated that an anxiety can negatively affect the productivity of faculty members, leading to their slow improvement. It is clear that continuing such a situation may result in scientific recession in high education system; therefore, this system cannot continue to serve effectively its performance, namely, education and research in society

    Study and map co-authorship network of researchers in Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Research Center of Tehran

    Background and aim: The aim of this study was to determine the scientific outputs of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Research Center of Tehran and map co-authorship network in the center. Material and methods: In this scientometric study, the population included all scientific papers of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Research Center of Tehran, indexed in Scopus. Co-authorship network was analyzed and mapped using UCINET and NetDraw. Findings: The prevalence rate of 29.28% indicated that scientific outputs have been rising trend in this Center. The network density was 0.0244. The results showed the authors with more scientific outputs have higher rank in terms of centrality index. Conclusion: Totally, co-authorship network in the studied center has poor cohesion and there is no relationship among nodes. Given the importance of medicine in public health, it is necessary to consider the increase of national and international cooperation and immediate access to the scientific outputs for researchers

    The effect of powder/liquid ratio on microleakage of resin-modified glass-ionomer

    Introduction: Resin modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGI) is prepared by manual mixing of powder and liquid. Different mixing ratios influence on the RMGI properties. The aim was to compare the effect of different mixing ratios on the microleakage of RMGI. Materials &Methods: In this in vitro study, 60 Class V cavities (3×2×1.5 mm) with the gingival margin of 1 mm apical to the cement-enamel junction were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 30 sound premolars. The teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups. Group 1: The manufacturer’s recommended ratio, without conditioning; Group2: The manufacturer’s recommended ratio with conditioning; Group 3: 20% lower than the manufacturer’s ratio without conditioning; Group4: 20% lower than the manufacturer’s ratio with conditioning; Group 5: 20% higher than the manufacturer’s ratio without conditioning; Group6: 20% higher than the manufacturer’s ratio with conditioning. After thermocycling, the microleakage was evaluated using silver nitrate staining. The teeth were cut into two mesial and distal halves, and the microleakage at occlusal and gingival margins was recorded based on a 0‒3 scoring system under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests with significance level at P<0.05. Results: The maximum microleakage at gingival margins was recorded for group 4, which was significantly higher than that of group 2 and 6 (P=0.043 and P=0.043, respectively). No significant differences were observed in the microleakage between occlusal and gingival margins. Conclusion: A 20% reduction in P/L ratio of RMGI increases the gingival microleakage when surface conditioning was applied

    Effect of energy drinks on microhardness of silorane and dimethacrylate-based composite resins

    Introduction: Increased consumption of energy drinks has raised concerns about their effects on dental restorations. This study assessed the effects of two energy drinks on the surface microhardness of methacrylate and silorane-based composites after 1-week and 1-month periods. Materials & Methods: In this in-vitro study, 90 cubic samples were prepared from Filtek P90, Filtek Z250 and Filtek Z350 XT composite resins. Vickers hardness test was performed to measure the baseline surface microhardness for each specimen. Ten randomly selected samples from each composite material were then immersed in one of the two sports drinks (Red Bull and Hype) or artificial saliva (control). Surface microhardness was re-evaluated after 1 week and 1 month of immersion. The data were evaluated using ANOVA via post-hoc Tukey tests and repeated measure test (α=0.05). Results: Surface microhardness of all composites were significantly decreased in energy drinks in both evaluation periods (P<0.001). In artificial saliva, microhardness was significantly increased after 1 week and decreased after 1 month of immersion (P< 0.001). After 1 month, the lowest microhardness changes were observed in Filtek Z350 XT composite. (18% and 14% reduction in Hype and Redbull respectively). Differences between energy drinks were significant for Z350 XT composite only after 1 week (P=0.01) and for Z250 composite after 1 week and 1 month (P=0.020 and P< 0.001 respectively). Conclusion: Hype and Red Bull energy drinks can affect the surface hardness of composite resins depending on their characteristics and exposure time
