Frequency of oral cancer in Babol during 2012-2016
Introduction: Regarding the lack of data on the frequency of oral cancer in Babol, the aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of oral cancer in Babol during 2012-2016.
Material & Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using pathology sheet records of oral cancer patients during 2012-2016. Survival status of patients was collected through telephone contact.
Results: The mean age of 48 patients was 62.2% (22-95) years, and 64.2% were male. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the most prevalent malignancy, and the most common site was tongue followed by pharynx. Frequency of oral cancer patients was 9 (18.8%), 9 (18.8%), 10 (20.8%), 12 (25%) and 8 (16.7%) patients from 2012 to 2016, respectively.
Conclusion: SCC, specifically on the tongue was the most frequent malignancy. It seems that the oral cancer prevention training is necessary for elderly adults
Evaluation of apical foramen distance in relation to the anatomical apex of mandibular molars by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a selected Iranian population
Introduction: Knowledge of the internal anatomy and apical foramen of a tooth has always been a fundamental prerequisite for root canal therapy. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the distance of apical foramen in relation to the anatomical apex of mandibular molars by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a selected Iranian population.
Material & Methods: In this cross- sectional study, 97 CBCT images of 25-50 years old patients were evaluated .the teeth were assessed in coronal plan.
Results: Average (±SD) distance from apical foramen to the anatomical apex in the mesio-buccal and mesio-lingual, distal canal were [0.938 (±0.294)mm], [0.964 (±0.315)mm] and [0.982 (±0.322)mm] respectively. No statistical difference was found between right and left quadrant.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that 1mm distance from radiographic apex in mandibular molars could be appropriate for root canal therapy
A rare presentation of actinomycosis: case report
Background: Anaerobic, nonsporulating, Gram-positive bacteria groups called actinomyces organisms are responsible for the so called actinomycosis. This chronic disease is rare in children and has tendency to mimic many other diseases. It also has wide variety of manifestations and non-specific symptoms. As a result, it is difficult to diagnose before the biopsy and microscopic examination. Although infection may involve any organ in the body, the significant sites of actinomyces infection include cervicofacial, abdominal, pelvic and pulmonary tissues. Case report: Here, we describe one case of unusual presentation; an 11-year-old girl with a soft tissue mass in the left lower lateral chest wall which was finally diagnosed actinomycosis based on the pathological findings. Scanning electron microscope and shear bond strength analysis of Biofix and Orthocem two-step fluoridated orthodontic adhesives on human enamel
Introduction: The bonding process in orthodontic treatment is very important. This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) and bond failure sites of stainless steel brackets bonded with two new two-step adhesives (Biofix (BF) and Orthocem (OC)) and a three-step adhesive (Transbond XT (TXT)).
Material & Methods: In this in vitro study, 66 extracted human premolars were collected and randomly divided into three groups (n=22). The brackets were bonded to each tooth with a) TXT, b) BF, and c) OC adhesives according to manufacturers’ instructions. The SBS values of the brackets were measured 24 hours after thermocycling. Adhesive remnant index (ARI), enamel detachment index (EDI) and bond failure locations on bracket surfaces were qualitatively and quantitatively assessed using stereomicroscopic, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyses. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22 software and ANOVA test. The significance level was defined at P<0.05.
Results: The means and standard deviations of SBS values for TXT, BF and OC adhesives were 22.49±4.58, 17.82±6.43 and 16.20±4.46 MPa, respectively. The SBS in the TXT group was significantly different from the two other groups, but the difference was not significant between the two other groups. Moreover, ARI and EDI were not significantly different between the three groups. The SBS values of BF (P<0.001) and OC (P<0.001) were not significantly different.
Conclusion: The adhesive SBS in the BF and OC groups was in the determined ranges to bond the orthodontic brackets. Therefore, these two adhesives can be used as a proper alternative for conventional bonding methods
Effect of sodium fluoride in fifth-generation adhesive (Solobond M) on microleakage and dentin type I collagen content
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the addition of sodium fluoride to fifth-generation adhesive (Solobond M) on the degree of microleakage and type I collagen content of dentin.
Materials & Methods: The present in vitro study was conducted on 120 orthodontically extracted human premolars devoid of decay and anatomical defects. Two series of 20 premolars were selected to test immunohistochemistry (IHC) and two series of 40 premolars to evaluate microleakage in two time points of 24 hours and 3 months. In both tests and at both time points, the tests were performed on the samples divided into four groups: 1-control (only Solobond M), 2-bonding group (Solobond M) containing fluoride, 3-bonding group (Solobond M) containing Chlorhexidine (CHX) after acid etching, and 4-bonding group (Solobond M) containing fluoride+CHX after acid etching.
Results: The IHC score at 24 hours and 3 months was significantly higher in the CHX, Fluoride, and Fluoride+CHX groups compared to the control group. The IHC score in the CHX+fluoride group was higher than that in the CHX group (p=0.04). The degree of microleakage at 24 hours and 3 months was significantly lower in the Fluoride+CHX and Fluoride groups compared to the control group. The degree of microleakage in the Fluoride group was lower than in the CHX group. The IHC score and the microleakage degree had no significant difference in 24 hours and 3 months between the Fluoride+CHX, Fluoride and CHX groups.
Conclusion: It seems that the effect of fluoride on non-degradation of collagen is greater than that of the CHX
The negative association between inflammatory bowel disease and Helicobacter pylori seropositivity
Background: The role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in inflammatory bowel disease is a controversial argument. The initial theory of this study was that Helicobacter is a risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease. In this study, we investigated the coincidence of H. pylori exposure and IBDs. Methods: This case-control study has been done in Babol, teaching Hospitals; 60 newly diagnosed IBD cases without any Helicobacter eradicating treatment and 120 control patients without inflammatory bowel disease evidence in biopsy, investigated for H. pylori exposure by IgA and IgG ELISA tests. Clinical information, demographics and ELISA test results have been analyzed using SPSS.Version.18 (level of significance was less than 0.05). Results: Mean age of case group was 42.27±13.64 years; in control group it was 45.52±13.83 years. There was a significant difference between the case and control groups in IgG study of the following subgroups: age under 30, females, males, urban, higher education level and BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 (p-value was respectively; 0.004, 0.014, 0.047, 0.002, 0.013, 0.003). On the basis of logistic regression; IBD was less common in females, patients with lower education and patients with positive result of IgG (p-value was respectively 0.002, 0.013, 0.010). Conclusion: As a result of this study, Helicobacter pylori exposure, may could play a protective role against inflammatory bowel disease
Percutaneous pinning versus pin-in-plaster for treatment of distal radius fractures
Background: Distal radius fractures constitute 17 of all fractures and 75 of forearm fractures in adults. Due to the vital role of the hands in a wide range of daily tasks, quick recovery and fewer complications for the patients are important. The purpose of this study was to compare the two common treatments of distal radius fractures namely, percutaneous pinning and pin-in-plaster. Methods: An observational analytical cohort study was conducted on 74 patients with distal radius fracture treated with percutaneous pinning fixation and pin-in-plaster techniques. The patients, aged more than or equal to 18 years with unilateral, closed and unstable distal radius fractures were treated in Shahid Beheshti Hospital during 2007 to 2010.The data were entered into the SPSS Version 20 statistical software and analyzed by student’s t-test, one-way ANOVA and repeated measures test. Results: Randomly, 31 patients were in pin-in-plaster group and 43 patients in percutaneous pinning group. The patients’ age range was 18-74 years. The average of radial inclination and palmar tilt after 6 weeks was significant (P=0.02, p<0.0001) in patients with percutaneous pinning. The performance of the patients after 3 and 12 months in both groups was significant (p=<0.0001). Conclusion: This study revealed that in approach to unstable DRF in adults, PCP method shows better improvement compared to PP technique
The Correlation between Craniovertebral Angle and Scapular Dyskinesis in Adults
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Faulty neck posture causes many musculoskeletal disorders in the neck and shoulders. Considering the shared muscle attachments of the neck and the scapula, identifying the correlation between neck posture and scapular position can be effective in preventing shoulder pain. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the relationship between neck posture and static and dynamic scapular position.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 38 female students from the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences without history of dysfunction in the shoulder and neck were selected and examined through nonprobability convenience sampling. Neck posture was examined by measuring the craniovertebral angle using diagnostic imaging techniques. The scapula – spine distance was measured using the ruler and the scapular winging was measured in hanging position of hand and during the flexion and scaption, and then the relationship between them and the craniovertebral angle was investigated.
FINDINGS: Subjects with an average age of 24.71±3.02 participated in the study. There was a significant correlation between craniovertebral angle (51.09±5.73) and the scapular winging in flexion (r=0.38, p=0.01) and scaption (r=0.44, p=0.005). There was no significant relationship between the craniovertebral angle and the distance between the fourth thoracic vertebra (T4) and the inferior angle of the scapula (6.29±0.96) and the distance between inferior angle and the corresponding vertebral levels (7.80±0.93).
CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that neck posture is correlated with scapular dyskinesis in a dynamic scapular position
Comparison of Vaginal Cream of Coconut Oil and Clotrimazole on Candidal Infection of Vagina
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Candidiasis is the second common vaginal infection, and commonly used drugs are azoles. Over-consumption of Azol is associated with resistance to drug and treatment failure. Studies conducted in vitro confirm the antifungal effects of coconut oil. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of vaginal cream of coconut oil and clotrimazole on vaginal candidiasis infection.
METHODS: This clinical trial study was performed on 71 women with Candida infection in two groups receiving vaginal cream of coconut oil: 35(78%) and clotrimazole (36%) (1%) who were treated for 7 nights (one applicator per night). One week after the completion of the treatment, patients were re-examined. Itching, burning, pain and secretion were compared in two groups.
FINDINGS: After the mean intervention (itching in the coconut group was 0±0 and in the clotrimazole group was 19±0.46 (p=0.017), (burning in the coconut group was 0.08±0.20 and in the clotrimazole group was 57% (p=0.046), (secretion in the coconut group was 0.05±0.23 and in the clotrimazole group was 66.6 ± 0.98 (p=0.001) (pain during sex in the coconut group 23 0.05 and 0.30±0.62 in the clotrimazole group (p=0.031). However, the success of the treatment (negative culture) was not significant between the two groups (p<0.05).
CONCLUSION: The present study showed that vaginal cream of coconut oil and clotriamzole both improve vaginal candidiasis infection. Therefore, vaginal cream of coconut oil can be used as an alternative treatment for vaginal candidiasis
Cytotoxic Effect of Titanium Dioxide-Hydroxyurea Nanocamposit on Hela Cancer Cell Line
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The use of nanotechnology in drug delivery Not only increase the efficacy and ease of drug penetration, but also they decrease their adverse effects. In this study, TiO2 nanoparticle was used as Hydroxyl Urea carrier to increase the contact surface of the drug and cells, and with pegylation of nanoparticle surface decrease immunogenicity, hence to increase drug solubility and penetration to cells. The goal of this study was to investigate cytotoxicity of synthesized TiO2-Poly Ethylene Glycol-Hydroxy Urea (TiO2-PEG-HU) nanocomposite on Hela cell-line and apoptosis induction of treated cells compared to the control group to determine the effective dose of nanodrug.
METHODS: In this laboratory study, the effect of TiO2-PEG-HU nano-drug was evaluated on cells bioactivity by MTT method at concentrations of 200, 400, 800, and 1800 µg/ml in 48 and 120 hours. Annexin-V/PI flowcytometry method was used to analyze apoptosis induction. Data were analyzed using uni-directional variance and independent T-test.
FINDINGS: Higher concentrations of TiO2-PEG-HU nanocomposite decreased cells bioactivity dependent on dosage and time. As the concentration of 1600 µg/ml of nanocomposite reduced amount of bioavailability by 1.52 times over a 120-hour period compared to the 48-hour time-effect. For both times, this reduced cell survival was `significantly different from that of the control group at the level of p <0.0001. In addition, nano-drug significantly increased apoptosis induction 2.5 times in treated Hela cells (p=0.0114).
CONCLUSION: Nano-composite TiO2-PEG-HU on the Hela cell line is cytotoxic and induces apoptosis and can be a promising drug for cancer treatment
