    Relationships between training load, peak height velocity, muscle soreness and fatigue status in elite-level young soccer players: a competition season study

    Background This study aimed to compare training load parameters, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and fatigue status between season periods (1st and 2nd halves) in U14 soccer players and to analyze the relationships between training load parameters based on season periods (1st and 2nd halves) with peak height velocity (PHV), DOMS, and fatigue status in under-14 (U14) young elite soccer players. Additionally, it was intended to analyze if fatigue, DOMS and PHV could explain training load parameters across the season. Methods Twenty U14 players that competed in the national league participated in this study. The players were monitored during the whole season (26 weeks), and evaluations were carried out at the end of the in-season. Anthropometric and body composition parameters and the maturity ofset of each player were utilized to compute each player’s age at PHV. Players reported their levels of DOMS and fatigue status using Hooper index questionnaires. The internal load was monitored using the rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Acute weekly internal load (AW), chronic weekly internal load (CW), acute: chronic workload ratio (ACWR), training monotony (TM), and training strain (TS) were also obtained. Results The main results showed that TM was higher in the 2nd half, while CW, AW and DOMS were higher in the 1st half of the season. Moreover, the main correlations showed a positive correlation between PHV and TS (2nd half of the season) and between fatigue and TM (1st half of the season). Conclusion In conclusion, variations in well-being status and PHV cannot explain the variations in internal training loads in elite U14 soccer players. In addition, internal training load indices during the frst half of the competitive season can promote a fundamental base for progression loads during the second period of the competitive season

    Evaluation of thiol disulfide balance in adolescents with vitamin B12 deficiency

    Background: Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin for metabolism and affects many mechanisms in the body including neuronal migration, DNA synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, brain and cognitive development. Increased oxidative stress in the body leads to the damage of the child development, but also plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of many diseases encountered in the childhood period. Our aim is to investigate whether or not B12 deficiency is associated with dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis in adolescent patients. Methods: This is a case-controlled observational study consisting of 45 adolescent patients with vitamin b12 deficiency and a control group consisting of 45 healthy adolescent. Patients between 11 and 18 ages who applied to the outpatient clinic for the first time with one of the complaints of headache were selected due to their decreased school performance, dizziness, and fatigue. Hemogram, vitamin B12, homocysteine levels and oxidative stress parameters such as native and total thiol disulfide levels and ratios of disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, and native thiol/total thiol were measured from the patients. Results: Vitamin B12 level was found to be significantly lower in vitamin B12 deficiency group (p < 0.001). The serum disulfide level was found to be 27.5 ± 8.38 in the case group and 20.5 ± 8.36 in the control group (p < 0.001). In the multiple linear regression analysis, it was determined that the independent variables of native thiol, homocysteine and disulfide levels effected of vitamin B12 levels (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.005 respectively; R2 = 0.62). Conclusion: The results obtained in terms of the effect of vitamin B12 deficiency on oxidative stress in adolescents are remarkable. The increase in oxidative stress parameters in the patient group may also suggest that oxidative stress plays a vital role in vitamin B12 deficiency in adolescence

    The effect of insulin resistance on the heart rate recovery in healthy individuals with a low-to-moderate cardiovascular disease risk profile

    The association between insulin resistance (IR) and heart rate recovery index (HRRI) has been reported previously, but the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk profile of the subjects was unclear in these studies. Therefore, we evaluated the association between IR and HRRI in apparently healthy individuals without metabolic syndrome who had a low-to-moderate CVD risk profile. A total of 182 eligible subjects were retrospectively included in the study. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) value. HOMA-IR ≥2.5 was defined as IR (+) group (92 subjects), and <2.5 as IR (-) group (88 subjects). HRRI-2 was found by subtracting the heart rate at the second minute in the post-exercise recovery period from the maximum heart rate. Abnormal HRRI was defined as HRRI-2 that is ≤42 beats. The mean age of the patients was 41.91 ± 8.64 and 49.4% of them were female. Abnormal HRRI rates were significantly higher in the IR (+) group (37.2% vs 18.2%; p = 0.004). A negative correlation was detected between HRRI-2 and HOMA-IR (r = -0.416; p < 0.001). HOMA-IR (Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.57; confidence interval (CI) = 1.10-2.23; p = 0.013) and maximum heart rate during exercise (OR = 0.95; CI = 0.91-0.99; p = 0.013) as independent variables of abnormal HRRI. The HOMA-IR value of 2.82 was identified as an effective cutoff point for the prediction of abnormal HRRI (area under the curve: 0.658; CI: 0.570-0.746; p = 0.001). In this study, it was shown that IR without metabolic syndrome reduces HRRI in healthy individuals with a low-to-moderate CVD risk profile

    Understanding the teachers' disaster preparedness beliefs

    This study investigated the extent of teachers' disaster preparedness beliefs regarding perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, cues to action, and self -efficacy and how their beliefs change concerning their demographic characteristics. The sample included 19,723 respondents who participated in the School-Based Disaster Education-Teacher Training Program of the Turkish Ministry of National Education. The results showed that teach-ers' preparatory beliefs, especially those associated with their perceived benefits, susceptibility, barriers, and self-efficacy, were high, whereas their beliefs were found as moderate and low lev-els in cues to action and perceived severity dimensions. Age, disaster education experience, and gender were found to be significant variables related to teachers' disaster preparation beliefs. However, respondents' residential areas do not show different beliefs since all regions of Turkiye are prone to short lead-time disasters. These findings can guide policymaking and interventions to promote national disaster preparedness and develop a more effective and tailor-made teacher training program

    Acquired hemophilia a in adults: a multicenter study from Turkey

    Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare disease caused by autoantibodies inhibiting factor VIII (FVIII) activity. Although the conditionis usually idiopathic, there may be other underlying diseases. Treatment consists of two steps: treatment of acute bleeding and immunosuppression. In this multicenter study, we aimed to demonstrate the clinical characteristics, management details, and survival of AHA patients in Turkey. Data was collected from eleven centers in Turkey. aPTT, FVIII, FVIII inhibitor, and hemoglobin (HB) levels, mixing test results, and demographics at diagnosis, treatment information, adverse events, bleeding episodes during follow-up, relapses, and outcome were analyzed. Twenty-nine patients were analyzed (58.6% female). No underlying disorder could be detected in 14 patients. The most prevalent etiologies were pregnancy, malignancy and infections. The median FVIII activity and FVIII inhibitor titer at diagnosis were 0.7% (0.0–29.4%) and 32.6 BU (0.6–135.6 BU) respectively. Bleeding was severe in 44.8% of patients. The HB value was significantly lower in patients with severe bleeding. Most of the patients (n = 25, 86.2%) had only one bleeding episode without relapse, three patients (10.3%) had two bleeding episodes, and one patient had more than three bleedings. 21 (75%) patients received hemostatic therapy. The use of recombinant FVIIa was slightly higher than activated prothrombin complex concentrate (15 versus 10 patients). Immunosuppressive treatment was initiated in 26 (93%) patients.     Experimental investigation of the heat transfer characteristics of a pulsating impinging jet on a flat surface

    In this research, cooling of the target surface consisting of a flat plate with constant heat flux using a pulsating impinging jet is investigated experimentally. In the investigations, the jet Reynolds number (Rej), Prandtl number (Pr) and geometric parameters were kept constant and the effects of these parameters on the heat transfer were analyzed while changing the distance between the jet and the target surface (H/D), amplitude (Ao) and jet frequency (Wo). Experiments were performed for three different blowing distances, four different amplitudes and six different frequencies. The pulsating jet is used as an active heat transfer enhancement method, temperature measurements were made in detail on the experimental setup and Nusselt numbers were calculated with the based on measured temperatures. The results are expressed as a function of dimensionless numbers, and the results are compared with the heat transfer results of continuous jet impingement. Experimental results showed that the pulsating jet has a significant effect on heat transfer enhancement. It was observed that the pulsating jet significantly increased the heat transfer compared to the continuous jets

    Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) is a common sports injury, but approximately 20% of acute ATR cases are misdiagnosed as ankle sprains at first presentation. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of lateral ankle radiography in the diagnosis of acute ATR. Methods: This was a retrospective case-control study in which the lateral ankle radiographs of patients who presented to the emergency department between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019 were examined. The study included a total of 154 patients with acute ATR, who underwent lateral ankle radiography at the presentation and were surgically or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed to have ATR in our hospital. The lateral ankle radiographs of the patients were examined by 2 clinicians blinded to clinical data for the following 3 findings: Kager’s fat pad sign, tibio-first metatarsal angle, and tibiocalcaneal angle. The same procedure was repeated for 308 controls who underwent lateral ankle radiography and were diagnosed with ankle sprain

    This study numerically investigated hydraulic and thermal performance in a channel with inclined baffles under pulsating flow conditions. The baffles were placed in a staggered arrangement. The governing equations were discretized with the finite volume method (FVM), and the pressure-velocity coupling was handled by the SIMPLE algorithm. The Strouhal number (St: 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4), pulsation amplitude (A: 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8), and Reynolds number (200 ≤ Re ≤ 1000) were changed. The top and bottom surfaces of the channel were kept at Tw = 350 K, and thermal improvement and friction factor were calculated for a pulsating cycle. The results were given in terms of thermal enhancement (η), relative friction factor (frel), and performance evaluation criteria (PEC). The flow and temperature contours were presented to determine the impacts of the pulsation frequency, the pulsation amplitude, and the Reynolds number. The results showed that the pulsation amplitude and the pulsation frequency contributed remarkably to thermal enhancement with increasing Reynolds numbers, while the heat transfer improved significantly depending on pulsation parameters together with a slight rise in friction factor. The highest thermal enhancement achieved was about 1.47 at Re = 1000, A = 0.8, and St = 4. The highest PEC obtained was approximately 1.12 at Re = 1000, A= 0.2, and St = 4. © 2023 Begell House Inc..     A Comparison of the Entrepreneurial Performance of Asian-Oceanian Countries via the Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Techniques of Critic, Aras, Waspas, Mairca and Borda Count Methods

    The significance of entrepreneurial activities, in the development of a country, has been increasing at an exponential rate, since the former variable has been repeatedly proven to have a vital effect on economic growth. Within this context, countries periodically publish data related to entrepreneurial activities and undertake regulations that incentivize such pursuits, within their jurisdictions. In light of this, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, was constructed to measure and evaluate the countries’ level of global entrepreneurship and the ability and hence, the success of entrepreneurial firms’ in developing and producing outputs of high quality. In this sense, one can state that the capacity of the aspects that constitute the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor to complement each other plays a vital role in countries’ improvement of their entrepreneurial performances. Taking all these into consideration, this study takes into account the Global Entrepreneurship Indicators; tries to identify via the Multi Criteria Decision Making Method their relative importance levels for 34 countries sampled from Asia-Oceania; ranks those countries’ entrepreneurial performances vis-à-vis the aforementioned importance levels through Aras, Waspas and Mairca methods and integrate the scores calculated by these three methods into one embedded ranking via the Borda Count method. The results suggest that while Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Thailand rank as the top three countries, with high levels of global entrepreneurship performance; India, Pakistan, Japan and Malaysia are the last performer

    Quaternions and homothetic motions in euclidean and lorentzian spaces

    In the present paper, we investigate homothetic motions de-termined by quaternions, which is a general form of our previous paper [20]. We introduce a transition between homothetic motions in 3D and 4D Euclidean and Lorentzian spaces. In other words, we give a new method that works as a handy tool for obtaining Lorentzian homothetic motions from Euclidean homothetic motions. Moreover, some remarkable prop-erties of homothetic motions, which are given in former studies on this subject, are also examined by dual transformations. Then, we present applications and visualize them with 3D-plots. Finally, we investigate homothetic motions in dual spaces because of the importance in many fields related to kinematics
