Social Media Addiction and Poor Mental Health: Examining the Mediating Roles of Internet Addiction and Phubbing

    No full text
Many researchers have examined the potential detrimental role of problematic social media use (often referred as ‘social media addiction’) on mental health. The present study investigated how social media addiction is associated with three components of mental health: depression, anxiety, and stress. In addition, structural equation modeling was used to test the mediating roles of internet addiction and phubbing among a sample of young adults (N = 603). Results showed that social media addiction was associated with poorer mental health via internet addiction and phubbing. More specifically, associations between social media addiction and stress, and social media addiction and anxiety were explained by both internet addiction and phubbing. The association between social media addiction and depression was explained by internet addiction only. These results remained consistent after controlling for gender, age, frequency of internet use, frequency of social media use, and frequency of smartphone use. These findings extend the extant literature by providing evidence for the dual roles of internet addiction and phubbing in explaining the relationship between social media addiction and poor mental health. Social media addiction did not directly influence poorer mental health but did via internet addiction and phubbing. Therefore, greater awareness of the inter-relationships between technology-based behaviors and their impact on mental health is needed among a wide range of stakeholders, and these inter-relationships need considering in the prevention and treatment of technology-based disorders

    No full text
Purpose: This study aimed to design a user-participatory methodology to investigate the post-occupancy sustainability of reused historical buildings and to apply it to a case study. Design/methodology/approach: This study was designed in four stages. In the first stage, the sustainability parameters and sub-parameters were determined in the reused historical buildings based on the literature. The second stage included a field study in which the current situation of the study area was analysed, and the users were reached using the survey technique. In the third stage, the data obtained from the user participation were analysed with importance performance analysis (IPA) and an IPA matrix was created. The fourth stage included an evaluation of the results of the analysis and the development of recommendations. Findings: IPA is a supportive method for ensuring the sustainable use of historic buildings. According to the data obtained from the IPA, it was seen that the functional sustainability of the building was achieved to a great extent. At the same time, there were deficiencies in technical and environmental sustainability. In terms of aesthetic sustainability, it was observed that the importance and performance values given by the users were generally consistent with each other. Originality/value: The originality of this study is that the performance of the reused historical buildings in the process of use was monitored with appropriate parameters, and a user-participated method was proposed that allows improvement suggestions to be developed in line with the results obtained

Background We aimed to analyze the expression of infection-related biomarkers and inflammatory cytokines in laboratory-confirmed cases and compare the differences between clinically severe and non-severe ones. Method We randomly selected 35 patients who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Blood serum was obtained at the time of admission to the hospital, on the third to the fifth day, and at the time of discharge. Result The median age of our patients was 56.5±69.7 months (range: 1-205 months). The mean pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP) was significantly higher at the time of admission than on the third to the fifth day of illness. The mean pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels at three time points were significantly higher in patients with severe cases than in mild-moderate cases. However, there was no significant difference between the clinical severity with regard to the cytokine levels at disease onset and recovery. Conclusion In the study, it was shown that cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Therefore, it may be beneficial to use agents such as tocilizumab in the treatment

Objective: Maintaining sinus rhythm is important in the management of atrial fibrillation (AF). After cardioversion, there is a significant probability of AF recurrence. There is limited research on the relationship between AF recurrence and ECG parameters. This study aimed to evaluate whether the frontal plane QRS-T angle (fQRS-T), a predictor of ventricular heterogeneity, could be used to predict AF recurrence following cardioversion. Methods: The study was conducted as a retrospective observational study. Patients diagnosed with acuteonset AF for the first time were included in the study. All patients underwent an ECG after cardioversion, and ECG parameters were evaluated. The patients were separated into two groups based on the presence of AF recurrence during hospitalization after cardioversion. The relationship between the fQRS-T and AF recurrence was also examined. Results: A total of 162 patients, comprising 68 women (41.9%) and 94 men (58.1%) with an average age of 59.4±6.5 years, were enrolled in the research. Based on the patient monitoring device findings, patients were separated into two groups: non-recurrent AF (n=118) and recurrent AF (n=44). P-wave duration was significantly longer in the recurrence group (p=0.009). The recurrence group's mean fQRS-T was significantly higher (p90 ̊compared to those with fQRS-T ≤90 ̊(56.1% vs. 14.2%, p 93.7 ̊indicated AF recurrence with 78.3% sensitivity and 83.4% specificity (AUC {area under curve}:0.748, p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, fQRS-T was revealed to be an early indicator of recurrent AF (OR: 1.882, 95%CI: 1.358-2.881, p<0.001). Conclusion: The fQRS-T, an easily determinable parameter from automatic identification ECG recordings, may be useful for predicting the early return of AF after successful cardioversion

Developing and Validating the Attitudes Towards Inclusive Education Scale (AIES) Around Contemporary Paradigms of Inclusion

A few educational models have evolved fast as inclusive education (IE), which has expanded from being a special education technique focused on integration to a comprehensive model that encompasses the education of all students. However, there is a lack of measurement tools that align with the evolving conceptualizations of IE, provide insights into its implementation in the field, and capture the perspectives of school staff. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was twofold: firstly, to develop the Attitudes towards Inclusive Education Scale (AIES) to assess the attitudes of school staff, including teachers, managers, and school counselors, towards IE; and secondly, to examine the relationships between staff attitudes, demographic factors (age, gender), work experience, educational level engaged with and prior training in IE. The AIES comprised 43 items and three distinct dimensions, demonstrating a valid factor structure and satisfactory internal consistency. The findings revealed that school staff's attitudes significantly varied based on gender and prior training in IE. This study makes a valuable contribution to the field by developing a robust and up-to-date attitude scale to assess attitudes towards IE

One of the most basic human needs is to dress. For that, people's clothing is an ongoing situation, evolving from the past to the present. When we look at the historical process, it is seen that people covered/dressed their bodies in order to protect them from various factors, but in later periods they started to cover/dress for different meanings and purposes. Many issues such as when people started to dress, how they dressed and what they used it for arouse great curiosity. When a literature review is made, it is seen that there are many studies on this subject. However, what is reported about dressing from the view of travelers presents another dimension of the clothing. In the travelogues of the Middle Ages and the geographical works fed by them, the information about the clothing of the period sheds light on the present; as travelers and geographers respond to the curiosities of successors with the information they have witnessed and sometimes obtained from the authors before them. In line with the observations made by the travelers in the context of on-the-spot observation and examination; important information is obtained about many subjects such as what people dressed in the medieval world, what and how the people used them, how they were traded, how they were used in diplomacy. Thus, it reveals other dimensions of dressing, such as how people can express their gender, status, perception of the society in which they live, their beliefs, customs, economic status, culture, psychology and even power. This situation is important for researchers as a vital data source for social historiography

    Get PDF
Extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) obtained from five Turkish olive cultivars widely produced in the Aegean and Marmara regions were investigated based on their total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), pigment contents, fatty acid (FA) profiles, phenolic compounds (PC), volatile compounds (VC), and sensory properties. The results showed that all properties of EVOO samples were significantly affected by the olive cultivar used. The pigment contents in Ayvalık (9.90 mg·kg−1) and Uslu (9.00 mg·kg−1) oils were higher than the others (p 0.05). Domat oil also exhibited the highest scores for bitterness and pungency perceptions (p < 0.05). The fruitiness scores of the oil samples (except for Ayvalık oil) were close to each other, even if they were statistically different (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the Ayvalık oil was separated from the others due to its poor-quality characteristics. As a result, it can be stated that Domat olive oil has better quality than the other
